Nice purchase! Some ppl dnt see the vision & possibilities of an older truck..typically blinded by newer trucks. Get her done one project at a time.

Oh my lord!!!! What have you done? That does not look like anything that belongs on the road let alone being leased to Landstar. Good luck, you're going to need it.

I still have my very first truck. It’s a ‘96 flat top FLD I bought in ‘98. I put 2.5 million on it myself. It was a great truck for me. It wouldn’t take a lot of cash, and you’re interior panels already need replaced. Do yourself a favor and do a lot of extra insulating on the interior. Mine is super quiet inside. We added sound deadening insulation everywhere and replaced the interior body panels. I also had spray insulation added to the firewall and the bottom of the truck. It stays warm in the winter. Cool in the summer and is super quiet going down the road. Mine is very comfortable to drive. It’s got a lot more leg room than any newer truck. Also, I’d recommend making sure the doors close properly. Mine required new door hinges and I added new door seals. Mine doesn’t leak air around the doors like most old FLD’s do. None of that cost me very much but it made the truck a lot nicer to drive.

Tell me more about that spray insulation. I have a 1999 century that needs interior work. Not as bad as some that I've seen, but for a $7K truck I can't complain 😂

    • @truckpilotnate2972
      @truckpilotnate2972 10 месяцев назад +1

@@vroor32 I wish I could. It was a mobile guy that I paid to do it. There were two tanks of liquid. It was mixed st the gun. He taped off everything we didn’t want covered. The underside of the truck and the firewall cost about $400 in 2000. I don’t remember the guys name, the name of the product or anything. A mechanic I used at the time told me about him and set it up. That mechanic has passed away, so I can’t even ask him. It sure did quiet the truck down, though. The insulation is pink. I thought about doing it to another truck I had, but didn’t have the contact info for the guy. I’d decided to just use something I could install myself. Then I sold that truck to my Dad and I never did it. I’m sure there something on line about insulating trucks better.

That truck looks so rough, but remember, the only thing standing between you and success is your own perseverance. Push forward one part at a time and a couple of hundred miles per day, and don't give up. Nothing is impossible, but giving up every time you start something sets you back further.

I really like FLD s. But that thing is rough. The guy you bought it from was a HACK or whoever he got it from is. You really need to hunt down a parts truck. The grille and the stacks would be at the top of my list. Then I'd go after the interior hardcore. Like I said a parts truck might be your best option for dash/ interior parts. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. I think once you get it sorted out you will love it. The good news is you can make it exactly how you want it. I think it's gonna be tough for the first little while till you get back to where it needs to be. All in all I'm happy for you.

It’s truly hard to rebuild a truck at the same time as working it when your livelihood depends on the income. Possibly keep running the other unit and get it all sorted out while not having to work it especially if you’re otr and not home everyday

To be honest, when I saw that dash, I was kinda hoping you bought that FLB in the intro, and I got a little excited, there's not enough cabovers in the US. As for buying the truck, there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying old trucks mate, they just cost money to make nice. But they are also considerably easier to fix and maintain. Personally, I'd see about getting an XL hood for that FLD and in my opinion I'd swap out the detroit for a cat, especially if you don't like cummins, I have never met a detroit I've liked, but you do you. External breathers would look good I agree with you on that one, and a ton of lights everywhere. Colour will be a big choice too, especially with all that chrome I assume is coming. Before you paint it though, some advice here from an old mechanic, make sure you go through every inch of that cabin and properly seal and waterproof it, I don't know what they are like in the US, but over here they have a tendancy to leak pretty bad. That is quite the project though mate, it's going to be a lot of work! Good luck and I'm looking forward to watching the progress..

They usually sell that stuff pretty reasonable. Good luck with the project!

FLD …. You reminded mine…. I used to call her “ always fixing small issue truck” … if you wanna drive FLD in 2024, you better be mechanically inclined and have snap-on tool in your truck…
    Pros
1 it’s cash and pre emissions truck
2 good first truck and learn how to replace things truck ( I can replace my turbo and injector kinda truck )
    Cons
You either driving or fixing some sort of leak.😅 good luck bro. We all been there..

Now, about that ugly? I say unique grill. Keep a vision (small vision) of that grill as a reminder of where your dream of truck ownership started and where the truck is in a year, five years, ten years. OK 😮‍💨, it hurts me to say this buttttt check with JustRUclips, I mean JustTruckin, for design ideals for the new grill. I remember him saying that he used to make grills. I don’t see how that truck ever passed a landstar inspection. Good luck to u. You gonna need it. You could have bought a w9 or 389 for half what you gonna have in that one just to get it road worthy.

I hope you can make some money with it first before you start spending out. My opinion people do what they want, it would've been use as a local truck maybe pulling containers, logs home every day with my family not "OTR" at the end of the day good luck wishing you and your family nothing but blessings 😎💪🏾🙏🏾💰

How did you install your ELD on your FLD & which company do you use with landstar? Looking to lease on but I didn’t know if my 99 FLD would be able to use ELD

When you take your truck to orientation, they’ll install it for you. I’m using Motive.
