well, some dudes from Spaceballs (Amiga Demoscene group) worked for this game. The dancing silhouette from "State of the art" demo was reused for this game.
What impresses me most about the graphics in this game are the "cutscenes". The movement of the athletes is amazingly natural for that era. Did they use motion capture? The movement is better than some N64 titles.
Impressive, but it closely resembles a graphics demo on the Amiga called "State Of The Art" which came out in 92. Watch it and tell me I'm not losing my mind lol
Damn impressing I was reading a wiki about the fx chip. I didn't know this game until now. This one really hits me hard. And man that intro I mean damn
True that. A NTSC version would have been really cool. I don't know how well it would have sold though as Winter Gold was released two months after the N64 came out over here.
Some of the team members who worked on this game created the Commodore Amiga demo “Spaceballs” (demo team State of the Art) where these visuals where pioneered. You can hear it in the music and especially see it with the ‘dancing girl’ effect.
@@marria01 And it's the same dancer in _Winter Gold_ who was the model for the "dancing girl" in State of the Art! Jannicke Selmer-Olsen was her name. I've been watching videos of this game for the last few days--especially your video. I got so geeked up about it, I have a copy coming to me in the US from Europe. One thing I find funny is how suddenly, and how often, they cut to those graphics and that groovy music--it begins to feel like a gag eventually. Anyway, I'm happy to add this to my minimalist collection of SNES carts--it's such a deviation from the norm. Aside from the polygons, there weren't that many winter sports games at the time, it seems. So...best of the genre for the time?
Megadrive also got a 3d chip later on but Sega dint use well, getitng the game to very pricey and later never usingthe chip again, the just dint check how much the game cloud sell and affer the failure abadon the idea for the console.
I agree. The SNES was an incredible console. I remember when Star Fox came out; we were all amazed. I bought Doom for the SNES when it came out and that was a great showcase for the capabilities of the SNES too. The music was great in that game.
@@eternalnut Was just about to say this, the SVP was way more impressive than the SuperFX. Full 3D and fully texture mapped game that ran at framerates higher than 10. Its a shame Sega threw all their money away at the 32X instead of focusing on the impressive tech they already had.
I'm really tempted to say that this game's graphics and soundtrack put those of Star Fox 2 to shame. I'm surprised Winter Gold has never seen any form of representation in any Super Smash Bros. game, especially when other, equally-(/more) obscure Nintendo-published games have had something, even if just a Trophy, Sticker, Spirit or a single music track.
loved the game when i was a child! Still puzzles me why it exists though as it was only released in PAL regions. For such a game it has no rights to be that technically impressive! It does so many things right in its presentation and playing it, in particular the skiing and bobsled, gives you the feel of speed and tension.
This game is very good, but unfortunately it is not available in NTSC JAPAN & USA Versions. If this game has an NTSC version, maybe the movement is faster than the PAL version

When I watched this video I had two main reactions:
1. This game has amazing graphics.
2. Man I miss the 90's.

You haven't seen the SNES do graphics until you've seen Winter Gold. It's a pretty good game, too.
Hello from Greece the first game with graphics like cds was donkey kong and the second is this...but the winter cold has awesome soundtrack

Woah. That intro is basically one big flex from the devs, haha.
It's Spaceballs from the Amiga (same devs)
Of course the 3d effects were done by one of the guys who worked on the Spaceballs demos!! I love it!!
Imagine the many more impressive games if the Super FX chip had existed earlier in the SNES era.
Pretty damn impressive for the SNES!
Pushing the limits
Excellent Graphics, Hidden Treasure of snes era!!! More FX games in snes!!!
Such an awesome intro.
I love it.
It's based on an Amiga demoscene production called "State of the Art" by Spaceballs, same programmer did the polygon engine for Winter Sports
Damn impressing
I was reading a wiki about the fx chip. I didn't know this game until now. This one really hits me hard.

This whole game is like a huge playable tech demo 😎
Damn, for an snes game this is impressive
Maybe it was a PAL exclusive due to the egregious eurodance intro, lol.
Impressive tech though, could pass for an early PS 1 game.
Those shadows in the Lillehammer downhill event are insane. I wonder how much of all this is rendered?
Wow that’s a cool game I have never heard of! Awesome playthrough Nintendocomplete!
Thanks!
Talk about the graphics all ya want, but my GOD, that soundtrack slaps SO hard!
Very impressive for a SNES game. Too bad it wasn't released in the US!
True that. A NTSC version would have been really cool. I don't know how well it would have sold though as Winter Gold was released two months after the N64 came out over here.
The snow in some levels actually changes position based on what direction you’re turning, really cool effect

You can feel the demoscene influence in that intro.
Well, some of the devs were in the Amiga demoscene. In fact, that girl dancing animation is straight from one of their demos
The most stylish game for a console of its calibre
