  • The Greenland shark can survive up to 500 years in the Arctic Ocean due to a unique set of circumstances associated with their environment that include a chemical antifreeze system, incredibly slow metabolism, slow growth rate, slow maturity and toxic flesh. This Greenland shark documentary highlights these facts with a compilation of Greenland Shark footage. The Greenland Shark is a rare animal for humans to see even though they survive up to 500 years and there is so much more to learn about them such as their hunting habits. The Greenland Shark often has a parasite in their eye (ommatokoita) that can cause blindness. Despite this, Greenland sharks are still estimated to live over 500 years, even with the vision loss. It is theorized that ommatokoita may be bio-luminescent and attract prey for the Greenland shark. The Greenland sharks antifreeze system is due to a compound called Trimethylamine N-oxide and although they reach a large size, their growth rate is about 1cm per year at certain points in their life. The Greenland shark doesn't even reach sexual maturity until the shark is 150 years old. These fact about Greenland Sharks are unique and I hope this Greenland Shark documentary and footage taught you something new about them. Comment if you'd like to know more Greenland Shark Facts or fact about other sharks such as sleeper sharks, great white sharks, or the extinct megalodon.

It survived because of lack of humans in the arctic

I agree, there is a good chance this contributes towards its survival.

Indigenous people and when they hunt, they are sustainable about it. They use up the whole animal and they only take as much as they need. I will admit though, it is sad to see such a great shark being pulled out the ground.

“As much as they need” as in like they don’t over hunt the species, since that goes against their principles.
