Theoretically, what you did is a tritone substitution. You can substitute a dominant chord (in A, E7) for a dominant a tritone away (Bb7). Why? Because both chords share the 3rd and 7th. They just swap. So, the third of your dominant E7, G#, becomes the 7th in Bb7 (Ab and G# are enharmonic) and the 7th in E7, D, becomes the 3rd in Bb. Why use a tritone substitution? Because it creates a nice half step resolution to the tonic. Bb7 to A7, a half step, instead of E7 to A, a fifth. You can also approach the Bb7 with its minor II, F-7. So, F-7, Bb7, A7. Bebop blues!
Keep playin’ Shawn and keep showing us how to. They’re all great noodle nuggets into how to step out of the 5 tonic rut. I’m sure we’re all tuning in and learning.
If one learns to use the Nashville Numbers system, as Shawn obviously has, then a certain understanding of theory just becomes instinctive. Mr Tubbs was most likely playing these types of licks long before he knew how to process the theory behind them. So when he says he’s not a “theory guy”, I believe it simply means he’s not actively thinking about the theory behind what he’s doing in the moment, but rather acting on instinct and worrying about the theory later. I operate (not nearly as well mind you) in the same manner, so I kinda understand what he means.
Shawn has been a guitar hero of mine for about 30 years now. Humor, generosity, humility, and terrifying chops. What more could you ask for. Thank you sir, keep up the good work.
This is my favorite guitar lesson on youtube! Really cool lick, and thanks for slowing it way down to help us slow learners, works much better than slowing the video down to half-speed! I think there are several snippets I can extract from this that I'll find really useful to spice up my own playing and sound a little more fusion-y. Plus, love the insight into your thinking. Thanks!
Man I love these teaching sessions. Good practical information that can be applied to what we already know. I would love to hear how you approach playing outside in a 12 bar blues. Thanks Shawn
I appreciate you doing these Shawn! I haven't stolen any note for note but they've been great rutbusters just hearing how you're approaching it. None of it has gotten me fired from a gig yet, but I did get asked to take another pass when I tried to throw one in on a session solo.
Pretty sure I can sneak that one in without getting fired. I'm getting to see the shapes you use, and it opens up a lot of things for me, thank you Shawn for sharing this.
I have been subbed to your channel for about a year. I was brought here by Travis feaster. I love to listen to you play ,teach demo or whatever. It gets me out of my own head. Keep up the great work. Thank you
Outstanding just like always Shawn! Have to admit that I watch your demo videos so I can learn new licks! Your demo videos are great and informative......but hey, just being honest. Best to you and yours Shawn! Thanks for sharing so freely.
Love these outside licks you’ve been showing us and if I ever get to play any of the gigs I have on the books, I will definitely be whipping a couple out! Go ahead - fire me! 😂
I was hoping you were gonna talk about that one thing I just saw you play on another demo. It was a pedal called A.P.E. Maybe you’ve already covered this and I haven’t found it yet, but I’d love to see it again if you haven’t. Just followed your channel after seeing that commercial lol cool playing!
Can I ask - with a lick like this one, is this something that pops out of the fingers or do you have to refine it a bit and then choose where to "deploy" it? :-)
Yeah, a really nice one, I've transcribed it way back then...one thing though...if I remember it correctly, you've played it a bit differently rhythmically, it had a swingier feel to it. Thanks. :D ps The way I see things, when you go back to A you're playing a mixolydian #11(or#4), which is a mode of melodic minor. Hope that helps...not that you need any help, but there it is. ;)
@@ShawnTubbs thank you for replying to me. I appreciate that very much. Your channel is one of the best channels on RUclips. I enjoy it. You do a fantastic job. God bless you.

Absolutely "keep doin' these". And if you can't come up with something some day, just play. I promise, we'll watch and listen.
This. 💯

I love learning all these licks you toss at us, Shawn. Thanks so much for taking the time to educate us plebs. :)
Thank you Shawn for posting this and showing us your approach - this helped me a lot

once again, the stuff you justthrowaway is what i'll spend the rest of the day working on

You're incredibly kind, thanks so much!
That opening riff, oh the sweet crunchiness but clean with clarity at the same time. Great stuff!

Great stuff as always, Shawn! Thanks for doing this.
Brilliant! And that tone you're getting is other worldly.
I think I've listened to this particular lick hundreds of times!!
You guys make the best OD pedal IMHO 🇮🇹

Shawn , you play just cool bro, keep it up ✌️
I watch to see you play first then look for whatever gear you're demo' ing. Keep them coming.
When you played it slow, every note sounded wrong in the best way possible which made it oh so right. Woah. Cool.

Cool lick. ! Original. Loved the video explaining the thought process.
Thanks Shawn👍👍

Thanks so much! That means a lot.
From someone who does know theory that was a great lesson. Thanks for sharing. Great ear by the way.
He says he doesn't know theory.. 🤣😭😅😆
I know just enough theory to prove that I don't know theory!
now that's just crazy
Such a talented guy you are ! Love it
please do more lesson, Shawn!

Nice lick and nice tone, Shawn! Probably how it would go - “Do it on your gig...” 😂😂 But, hey - we’re guitar players and we can’t help it!

Damn You, Tubbs! I need a Bourbon after the 7th speed bump..
Haha! Thanks Gary!
YES!!!! Thank you!!
"twelveth..." LOL... hate it when my dentures fly out
Very cool lick! May I ask why I don't see you playing the Port City OS cans anymore?
I just have the one cab, but I don't use it as much as I do my 2x12 Bogner. Port City builds great stuff.
@@ShawnTubbs Please share what speakers do u use in the Port City and in the Bogner?

Hi Shawn, I would absolutely love to take guitar lessons from you, do you give online guitar lessons?
Thanks very much for your interest. It's too difficult for me to allocate the time for lessons right now but thanks again for asking.
@@ShawnTubbs Thanks for the speedy reply Shawn, you rock!
Put it on your solo record, I'll buy it.

These types of licks work best over the 5 chord into the 1.
I turned off Jack Thammarat to watch this Tubbs :)
Haha, Thanks for watching!

My binary brain just aches 🤪 ouch !
What’s the guitar your using in this video?
That's a Michael Tuttle guitar.
@@ShawnTubbs am I missing something but have you ever discussed? What kind of pick you were using?
Fender 351 heavy. @@Gunslingerc45
