Britney's is one of the saddest career stories I've ever witnessed. She's still one of my favorite artists ever but... what the music industry did to her was painful to watch and hear.
She is one of the most successful artists of all time and in terms of the young attractive female performer thing, she probably has never been bettered and probably never will. The rest of her personal life is probably what you could just describe as 'life'. Maybe not the being admitted to a mental hospital thing and being on tranquilisers though.
Music industry?? Blame her parents. They pushed her/ allowed her knowing full well what the execs wanted from her. Her parents can never lose that paycheck. She'll never get out from under that conservatorship. Why do you think they keep having her committed?
Here after reading her memoir. Mourning what could have been for her life, but so proud of how she has made it through and now can make her voice heard finally. She’s such a kind soul and a true star.

This is someone who had all the potential to be the next Madonna and MJ, and is limited to her prime as her legacy because she doesn't have a desire to work but also any care to a certain degree for her fans because she uses her mental health sometimes as an excuse. People thinks it's her dancing but maybe if she just sang sometimes in full live like in this video with her modest dance moves no one would care.
Her top is riding up, the sound is giving feedback, her microphone keeps falling off, her hair is blowing in her face, and she is trying to move around the tiniest of stages... And yet she remains 100% professional and gives an outstanding performance! She should be very proud of her work ethic and talent here, but I imagine she was quite relieved when the concert was over!

I dont want to write too much but there is a reason why the music biz wanted her to only sing in her "baby voice". This is also why now we are seeing Britney very rarely if at all very differently then how she was first brought to "The worlds stage" what the business has done to her as well as her handlers not many young people survive. Its all about "Marketing" a certain image and "Sound". Many influencers on Tik Tok and journalists have written about the M!nd C0ntrol of Hollyw00d in general this is all no conincidence nor is it anymore conspiracy theory. It's well documented why certain "pop" stars or rock stars sing how they sing or do what they do. She was doing ballet at age 2, a trained gymnast, performing on Star Search at 8. Genetically perfect face and body; one of the best dancers / performers on earth at her peak; beautiful alto voice, and a pure soul who never came after anyone. God truly had a plan when he made Britney Spears. I’m praying for her well - being as her family / greed, sex / disloyal men, and media / fame has caused her all of these problems she’s in today. She needed to be protected, as her image and life really changed after 2003, 1998-2003 was her peak and all downhill from there. An abortion, drugs, marriages, kids, post partum and mental health issues. Praying for you Britney and your fans LOVE YOU. 🙏

I never realized how much I'd miss this era. I was a 19 year old dude during this timeframe and cringed at the pop scene at the time. But now I realize it was a time that we'll never get back. I should have totally embraced it. It's so much better than the music scene today in many ways.

Binge watching this and all of her music videos reliving my high school, teenage days. She has been and still is a big part of my life. Her voice, dance moves, beauty, body, sense of fashion, sweetness and professionalism despite of everything she was going thru is incomparable. She sang Born to make you happy in other show. In this one she couldn't control her voice because she was trying to sand with the baby voice and that song was terrible but in other show's she did it with her Mezzo-soprano voice and yes, she has a very powerful voice, sadly what industry did with her.

Who’s telling her to sing the baby voice live? Music execs are so annoying, when Britney’s sung ‘Baby’, Sometimes’ and ‘Born to make you happy’ live on The View, SNL and other talk shows in 1999, she used her natural Mezzo voice and sounds amazing. Trying to do that baby voice and even walking, let alone dancing is a very hard ask for anybody. She was the "IG singer" of our generation. You can see she wasn't even trained to perform and sing, even without moving around, could not land a note. Back then, our IG was the TV, this generation's TV is any giving social media. It's the same thing.
She has more integrity as a live performer than she was ever given credit for. No lip syncing, even with the choreography. You can see the genuine effort she puts into her vocal delivery both emotionally & technically. When Ariana Grande does her vocal impersonations & gets around to Britney Spears, she shows us just how unique & iconic her voice is. A really outstanding pop singer & so beautiful as well.

When talking about Britney’s talent a lot of people bring up “yeah her voice isn’t the best of the best and she doesn’t sing live, but she makes up for it in her dancing and stage presence which is unmatched” and I agree, but the frustrating thing is she actually has a good voice too, its so deep and soulful and capable of runs, and as the Britney eras went on we heard it less and less. If they let her use her natural and GOOD voice she’d be even more of a phenomenal talent but that’s how branding works I guess :(
Actually... watching "this" Britney Spears makes me sad and emotional... it brings me back to the Britney that was so talented, active and entertaining, while engaging with the audience and giving them what they paid their money's worth... Now she performs like a robot & doesn't even bother to sing live. I've seen her sing other songs LIVE from this album, it wasn't only this performance. She lost her confidence level in SO MANY WAYS. I've loved her from the very beginning and I still do-- the only difference now is that I am completley heartbroken and sad for what she has gone thru, what ppl put her thru, to have become the Britney we now know... This wasn't a real Britney either. Her voice in 1999 was already destroyed. She couldn't sing like she used to do when she was a kid in the early 90's. Have you ever heard her singing on Star Search (1992) or Mickey Mouse Club or other events ? She was incredibly talented then, her voice was very strong and beautiful and she had a very wide vocal range. She could've been one of the best artists in the world, her singing was similar to Whitney. Not even a comparison with all her later albums and performances.

It's probably one of the performances that made her realise that no human can dance so much and sing live. The playback is not a choice, it was necessary considering how hard she's performing.

She was a poor country girl who happened to score gold and was at the right place at the right time. She got lucky. Shes got the true rags to riches story. Looking back it is so sad to see how far from this the industry took her, she had/has all the right tools, even tho she is still doing great, her career could've been even greater, had her management nurtured her natural voice and took the time to help her develop it and master her vocal techniques with a good vocal coach, instead of masking it with auto tune, her voice was stronger & mature when she was younger, it's no wonder she won't sing live now, voices mature with age and she can't sustain singing in a higher key that's unnatural in reality, they turned her into a product and forgot who they signed to begin with, a sweet delicate young lady with a unique voice and talent to capture the audience, I wonder if she ever looks back on these performances and thinks why didn't I just stick with my own voice. Her career would have looked vastly different and she would have made the music SHE wanted to instead of having J*ve push her to embody this false dichotomy of "lolita/virgin" that eventually worked against her circa 2003. I'm thinking the execs who trained her in that "baby" voice told her that using her naturally lower register wouldn't sell. I know that's something she brags about (selling millions of records) so that became more important to her too, selling records and becoming a pop icon rather than being a vocalist.

There are several moments like this song. Means she had good singing position with deep voice, but they made her sing babylike and she’s struggling switching. Actually there is even earlier record of her in a black dress where she is singing her real voice. It’s a record from a rehearsal in some hotel or fest, there’s nobody even listening...

She’s contractually obliged to sing in that voice, in 2017 Britney talks about it and her own sarcastic way says “It feels illegal holding this mic in my hand, it feels so weird” and then proceeded to sing a cover of ‘Something to talk about’ using her real voice. There’s a lot of videos on it and her album she secretly recorded and went on Ryan Seacrest radio shows saying “Original doll is my new album”, she wrote her album herself, a few days later her label came out and said NO! I recommend you watch some docos and videos on RUclips, it’s tragically fascinating what’s happened and is still happening to Britney.

I wish there was a way to show her that the true fans are still there for her and care about her and we have been there all along. This wasn't a real Britney either. Her voice in 1999 was already destroyed. She couldn't sing like she used to do when she was a kid in the early 90's. Have you ever heard her singing on Star Search (1992) or Mickey Mouse Club or other events ? She was incredibly talented then, her voice was very strong and beautiful and she had a very wide vocal range. She could've been one of the best artists in the world, her singing was similar to Whitney. Not even a comparison with all her later albums and performances.

Looking back it is so sad to see how far from this the industry took her, she had/has all the right tools, even tho she is still doing great, her career could've been even greater, had her management nurtured her natural voice and took the time to help her develop it and master her vocal techniques with a good vocal coach, instead of masking it with auto tune, her voice was stronger & mature when she was younger, it's no wonder she won't sing live now, voices mature with age and she can't sustain singing in a higher key that's unnatural in reality, they turned her into a product and forgot who they signed to begin with, a sweet delicate young lady with a unique voice and talent to capture the audience, I wonder if she ever looks back on these performances and thinks why didn't I just stick with my own voice. I would still like her to just take a break get her voice back on track and release an acoustic album, she no longer needs to be the heyday Britney, just a Britney that's in love with performing again and engage with her audience!

This comment is perfect. Learning how her label manipulated her natural voice just to turn her into a damn product makes me sick. Her career would have looked vastly different and she would have made the music SHE wanted to instead of having J*ve push her to embody this false dichotomy of "lolita/virgin" that eventually worked against her circa 2003. I would argue that even in this clip she isn't *truly* singing in her naturally lower tone. She's struggling to maintain that "baby" voice her label forced her to use. Britney's voice is naturally soulful and deep, which is perfect for like you said acoustic and R&B/Soul music. Not pop.

When she sings Baby one more time at the end with all that heart and soul around 19:00 I couldn't help but start crying because that low register is so beautiful, I wish the industry would have capitalized on that beautiful voice and passion right there. I'm thinking the execs who trained her in that "baby" voice told her that using her naturally lower register wouldn't sell. I know that's something she brags about (selling millions of records) so that became more important to her too, selling records and becoming a pop icon rather than being a vocalist.

She’s contractually obliged to sing in that voice, in 2017 Britney talks about it and her own sarcastic way says “It feels illegal holding this mic in my hand, it feels so weird” and then proceeded to sing a cover of ‘Something to talk about’ using her real voice. There’s a lot of videos on it and her album she secretly recorded and went on Ryan Seacrest radio shows saying “Original doll is my new album”, she wrote her album herself, a few days later her label came out and said NO! I recommend you watch some docos and videos on RUclips, it’s tragically fascinating what’s happened and is still happening to Britney.
