I think this was one of the biggest differences between the artists. MJ was a superstar at heart who put on productions and people looked at him as an idol. Prince focused more on the organic nature of making music rather than putting on a production, and he always wanted his supporters involved - whether that was singing backing vocals that he would orchestrate, having people come dance on stage, or even just having online chat rooms that he would go in to talk with fans and get their input about what bootleg projects they wanted official releases for.
MJ put on shows. Prince hosted parties. Not saying one is better than the other, it just depends on your personal preference. But I’ve always found that distinction between them to be very important.
I listened to a lot of Prince’s songs and didn’t like any of them. They actually sound terrible to me. I don’t know how people like them. I don’t like Queen, for example, but I can see why people do. But Prince, I really don’t think he’s good. He’s also not a a good dancer. The whole world know MJ. Almost no one knows Prince. Especially outside of the US.

Michael Jackson and Prince are 2 different types of artist. Michael is in the dancing hall of fame, could tap dance and master most forms of dance. He was the consummate entertainer modeling his career off the great James Brown. MJ could beatbox his tunes to create his music and if you've seen beatbox, it's a genius at work. Go see his beatbox of tabloid junkie. His live performances would mesmerize people.

My husband doesn’t even like most of Prince’s music but he said it was the best concert he has ever been to.

You don’t need to play instruments to be generally better than someone that plays instruments. Both artists claimed to be Pop artists they were both commercial.. Michael had the edge because he understood the industry more than Prince. Playing instruments is not a criteria in judging who makes better music. You can play 100 instruments if you want but Michael is who the majority prefers because he works seriously hard, he makes better music, Michael’s music is the bomb 💣! , have you seen the man on stage ?? You don’t go to a Michael concert and come back the same way. Your mind must be blown away. He dances and sings for 2 hrs straight and just so you know, dancing is one of the hardest things to do.. you’re not a dancer so you don’t know. dancing is an art form on its own and continuously literally destroys your feet and toes . Prince has calm songs so it’s easier to perform them without losing breathe. If you force yourself to make music most of your songs will be mid. You don’t walk into the studio to record just because you want to record music ! If your music is to speak truth you have to wait and experience something before you put it into words. So I don’t care if Prince wrote twice as many songs as Michael wrote. Michael wrote songs and he was good at it and his songs were smash hits. Michael and his brothers left Motown because they didn’t allow them write their own songs on Motown, they went to Epic records on a condition that they are allowed creative control. Michael Produced.. I only recently found out that Michael produced half the tracks on Destiny and Triumph albums respectively while he was still in the Jackson’s. Michael produced every song on Dangerous, Teddy Riley was in charge of making the beats and Michael was in charge of the whole production and mixing , while Bruce sweiden did the mastering. One of my favorite songs ever “THEY DONT CARE ABOUT US” was fully written, produced, mixed and mastered by Michael. So don’t ever say Michael can’t produce. He can do it on his own if he wanted to, he just loved other to be around and chip in ideas.

Record sales don't mean anything. As a producer, arranger, composer, performer, as well as a musician who played multiple instruments, singer, and songwriter, Prince was the total package. His music was more innovative and he dared to take chances and experiment musically, which made him more interesting. MJ's music was more safe and though it may have appealed to more people, it wasn't as groundbreaking as Prince's.

@adillavelli That is not totally true. Michael Jackson wrote the majority of his hits, only a minority of them were written by other people. MJ was definitely more of an artist than Drake could ever hope to be.
He also wrote songs for other artists, including Diana Ross.
While it's true that Prince wrote more of his own songs, his music was simply nowhere near as successful as MJ's was. Prince also has several songs that wee coproduced or cowritten by his band mates. Purple rain was produced by Prince AND the revolution, not just Prince.

Majority will pick MJ just because of influence and popularity. But if you’re boiling it down to pure talent, artistry, and who has more solid albums from front to back. It’s Prince.
Prince made 39 solo albums, MJ made 6 solo albums. Out of them 6 albums 3 of them are in the top 10 best selling albums of all time. And it ain't no popularity or influence contest, it was the immense talent thus the reason he has sold over 750 million records with them 6 albums and that's not including Jackson 5 and The Jacksons album. The man has sold over a billion records.

Michael Jackson and Prince both had great qualities and strengths that enlightened and enriched the lives of his so many people.
And as for them, both were great friends and supported each other. Especially Prince who hated when people dissed or said bad things about MJ; which made him quite angry toward them.
Check out the interviews that Cat did for the Prince podcast called "Prince had Jokes and Respect for Michael Jackson - Told by Cat", and also the interview that Appolonia did for DJVlad ( especially the segment "Apollonia: Rick James Dissed Prince & Asked Me to Join Mary Jane Girls (Part 8)"). Both explained how Prince and MJ were great friends and that anyone who had claimed they hated each other were lying.

When i was young i preferred MJ to Prince to be honest, i think it was because my family didn't like the profanity Prince used in some of his songs but as i got older i much preferred Prince. I saw them both live and though MJ was amazing his shows for me were always the same and became boring to me, Prince always reinvented his songs live and never mimed like MJ did and was always unreal to the point where people couldn't believe that he never dropped a note singing on stage. Prince as live performer is really an unbeleavable thing. Dude reinvetend himself so many times. Just look at Purple Rain Tour, Parade Tour, Sign O' Times Tour and Lovesexy Tour. Totally different .

I always think of the Prince vs MJ debate as being similar to the Android vs iPhone debate. iPhones are far more popular, and iPhone users will die on that hill defending how superior they are. But we all know Android is technically superior even though it’s not nearly as popular.
MJ is an icon and definitely the more popular artist. But Prince is the musician’s musician and prioritized his art and personal connection with his fans over mainstream success. Not saying MJ only cared about the success because obviously cared a lot about his art, but his goal was to be a superstar. I think Prince would have been content with being a studio musician or professor. He cut the tour short for his most successful album because he was bored and already had the next several albums done and ready to put out. Prince is the ultimate underground artist, doing everything himself, finding innovative ways to get his music out even if it wasn’t financially lucrative - selling through the internet and 1-800 lines, giving albums away as newspaper cover mounts, giving albums away for concert goers (even though he originally wanted to give concert tickets away with CDs instead).
Despite the egotistical image the media likes to portray of Prince, he was one of the most humble individuals I’ve ever known. (This comment has nothing to do with MJ because I didn’t know him and can’t compare them in that regard.) P never let his fame get in the way of helping people and connecting with everyday people on a very human level. Of course, he had his public mystique, but he was a very generous person in private with his time, money, and energy. He will always be the greatest human of all time to me, just based on the way he moved through life in private. And his self-contained musicianship is second to none. Not just because of how many instruments he played but how many genres he played as well. He wrote songs for country artists. He composed an entire orchestral ballet. He has more songs that start with the letter S than MJ released in total. And while his music may not be as successful, he made music for the love of creation rather than for the charts, and you have to respect that. 💜

Let me add some Michael FACTS that you don’t seem to know. Michael was MASSIVELY popular; however he was one of the most humble, kind, giving, pure hearted artists ever. He loved his fans with an UNWAVERING devotion. Thus, the reason his fans, 40+ years later, still love, respect, admire and defend him 100%. I don’t know ANY other artist who would donate ENTIRE tour grosses to charity. Michael DID. I don’t know any other artists who would go to hospitals to visit sick children on EVERY tour. I don’t know any other artist who donated over $500 millon in charity while alive & left 20% in his Will to charity. EVERYONE who worked with him or met him said there was never any arrogance or rudeness about him. He cared about QUALITY over quantity.We always KNEW that every MJ album was going to be great, videos amazing, etc. because Michael took his time and didn’t release any half assed 💩. Yes, he was Popular; but, he cared about his craft because he wanted to present us with his BEST. Maybe, that’s why his music has lasted the test of time. Maybe that’s why new generations are discovering his music, videos every single day. MJs music had ALWAYS appealed to every race, age, genre, etc. That FACT has not changed today,

And when I mentioned Prince's character, I was intentional about mentioning that those comments had nothing to do with MJ because I didn't know him personally and can't speak to his character like I can Prince's (who also donated entire tour proceeds to charity, by the way). I'm glad so many people recognize the greatness of both of these artists and their lasting impact on the world. 💜
