Hi, I just did a "no dig border tree ring" like you shown in the video, thank you very much for sharing the how to, I got the Vigoro edging from Home Depot same with the fast set post concrete mix, I did it for my little sister and she just loves it! I let her doing the easy part which is spraying the concrete with water 8-)
Glad you enjoyed the video and that you had great results! Have a great day! Hey, if you'd like to send finished pix of your border that you made, you can send them to me at tim@timvogelaar.com. I'm gathering some together for my website. Here are some other great results made by others that have watched this video: www.timvogelaar.com/Easy-diy-no-dig-border.
If you don't mind me asking, how much was it for all the supplies needed
@@ez6315 If my memory serves me well, I got 2 bags of Quikrete Fence and Post fast setting about $8.50 bag of 30kg, 26 stone at $2 each, No dig Edger Vigoro at Home Depot for $38 for 60feet, because the shorter one was out-of-stock. To estimate the number of stone needed, you need to do a little math, take the radius of the circle, i.e. the center point to where you want the circle is, so circumference=2 x pi where pi can be 3.14 , measure the stone length, take circumference/stone-lenght you have approx amount of stone needed, I add extra one just for security. I also got extra long landscaping nails, I think I bought 10 about 0.90 each I think.
Anyhow, thanks to @maxpatch67, stone edger can never be so easy and fun to do.
You all prolly dont care but does any of you know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Kyrie Castiel Instablaster ;)
using a string tied to a can of marking spray paint, you can make a circle without eyeballing it. Measure the string from the trunk out to where you want the edging to be. the just walk around the tree
Genius idea! Thanks, Cynthia!!
Just to let you know, this video is still having an impact. I live in northern Illinois and just today installed a ring. (I mean, I finished like an hour ago!) Great results. I followed all of your directions, including using cardboard as a weed barrier. I've lived in this house for nearly 18 years and from the day I moved in wanted to do something with the sloppy area under the frontyard tree, but never knew just what to do. I came across your video about three weeks ago and thought, THAT'S what I want to do. I'm knocked out by the finished look. Thanks for the tips!
Richard, I'm so glad to hear this! Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. If you wanted to, you could send me some pix to tim@timvogelaar.com. I'll post them on my website www.timvogelaar.com/Diy-no-dig-border-folder-of-galleries. Anyway, WAY TO GO!! Your neighbors might be jealous of you, :) I'm so glad you found the perfect solution about what to do with your ground under your tree.
24 year old studying to give my moms front yard a make over. Thanks for the easy tutorials!!!
Great idea, Makaylah. This border lasts and really boosts curb appeal forever so its a good choice!! Have a great day!!
THis video is right on time. I had laid out fabric around the trees that I wanted to outline. this will save so much time and money, as well as labor. Thanks for sharing. Your videos are awesome.
Willie Dora, you are so complimentary....thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. :)
I have been so clueless about what to do with my rocks and the weeds at the edge of my flower bed, this morning this video came into my feed literally out of nowhere. Im so excited to do this. Seems so easy!! Thanks
I'm so happy you found this video. Make it plenty big and you won't ever regret making this!! Thanks for the comment, Danielle!!
Hah…. Video came Out of nowhere?? Nope, technology is listening to you! Happens to me on my Google app all the time. Just talking about something and your phone “listens” to you. Next thing ya know an article or video pops up. So weird, but true.
This video is so well made! Very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to do this! I can’t wait to go get everything I need and make our tree ring!
Jessica, thank you for your kind words. I am also a middle school teacher, so I appreciate your compliment on the quality of this video. :) Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment, and I'll be anxiously awaiting to hear how your tree ring turned out!! Have a great day, Jessica!!
@@maxpatch67 the tree ring turned out perfect! I’m very happy with it! Thank you!

Thank you so much for the great DIY. I think with help from my granddaughter we might tackle this next year. Have a blessed day. I subscribed and look forward to more ideas. I always like the videos that I do like. 😁👍
My pleasure, Linda. You have a blessed day too!
This video saved my life and thousand of dollars. I had to edge my tree on a long distance as the roots were getting out and I had to hide. There was no way to dig and cut the roots I really didn’t know what to do for so long. Thanks for showing the way
Whoa....really?? I'm so glad you found this video. Thank you for letting me know that!! Did you already create the border?
MANY THANKS FOR SHARING THE GREAT WAY TO DO THIS BORDER TREE RING. IT IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA AND SAVE MONEY FOR HIRING LANDSCAPE SERVICE.
My pleasure!! Have a great day, Minh!!
I've been watching many videos, and a few showed how to get a perfect circle by tying a loose rope around the tree trunk down low and deciding on your circumference. Get a can of spray paint and hold the rope end and walk around the tree while spraying the paint to mark the area. You'll get a perfect circle.
Great tips, Lillie!! Thanks!!
This video was exactly what I needed. My tree is 20 years old and has uneven protruding roots so I had to put in a second level of stone edging to hide them. But your explanation gave me confidence thanks
Way to go! I'd love to see pix of your great work!! Chris, I'd love it if you'd be able to send me pix to my email tim@timvogelaar.com then I could post them here: www.timvogelaar.com/Diy-no-dig-border-folder-of-galleries for others to see. Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment! Have a great day!
Be very very careful not to cover the root flare or burry the surface roots too deeply. The trees grow roots like that for a reason. They need to breath.
Thanks sooooooo much for this! It worked perfectly and supply’s were easy to get. Thanks man!!!
No way, really? You are so welcome, StalfosZ87!! Hey, if you have some pix, I'd love to see how it looks and then put them on my website: www.timvogelaar.com/Easy-diy-no-dig-border. I do have a question. How do I get rid of the grass inside the edging under the tree? Ty sir!
My pleasure, Aquarius Water!! To get rid of the grass inside the border, just use the technique in this video right here. Its the very best best method and works perfectly: ruclips.net/video/HIWDPlaB6wY/видео.html Thank you for your comment and have a good day!
Perfect! Thanks

Going to do this around my lemon tree! 💛
You'll have a happy and beautiful lemon tree! :)
Great tutorial thanks
My pleasure!!
Looks good but I just see myself years down the road saying, "why the hell did I use concrete?", when I'm trying to remove it because the roots are making it uneven.
A large tree nearby could do that, but bushes or small trees are not a problem. You might want to use a different border.
To be fair if you get several years out of it it is a win
Thank you
Easy way thank you for your video it’s really help

Useful video... will try this...I may do an extra prep step by weeding out the inside of the ring so the grass does not grow feeding on the mulch...

How did it go??
@@maxpatch67 it went well, I'm happy with it
You just saved me endless research with this informational video. Thank you so very much.
My pleasure, Shirley!
Nice!!! Thanks
Thank you for the great tutorial. I love the fact that there’s no digging involved. What happens when the block off brick doesn’t fit on the exact circle of the bed? Also is it possible to use the same method for a second level wall? Thanks!
You have two options for the odd sized gap. One is to adjust the border size so it fit perfectly and the other is to customize one block to the right size by chiseling it down or just hammering it down to size...use eye protection.
just as the NO DIG BORDER, it lookx beautiful!! and thanx for the previous info; I can't wait to try'em out!
Nancy, thanks for taking the time to leave this comment. I hope you get a chance to make yours. I'd like to hear how it turned out when you are done. Have a good day, Nancy!

Thought you were Jack Black at first glance! Lol. Great video. 👍🏻
haha...I've heard that before!!! :) Have a great day, RTROTA!!
Awesome videos! I'm so excited to try this! Looking at the no-dig edging product, I'm going to use Dimex.
Would you recommend the Standard Wall Height of 1.5" or the Tall Wall Height of 2.2"?
Thank you!!!
I would go with the 2.2". I think the Vigoro that I like to use is around 2" and I think that's just right so that's why I'd go with the 2.2" Dimex. Have a great day!
Great vid! I actually decided to build a gravel bed along the walkway in front of my home, using the beige stones, 1/2 white marble & assorted plants.
Tree rings coming soon for 3 trees, once my budget refreshes 😬

잘 보고 갑니다.
Awesome tutorial! I’m going to try it! Quick question, would it be possible add a second layer of stone on top of the bottom
one using the quick set cement?
To add another layer, use landscaping block adhesive. This works perfectly for this situation. Thanks for the compliment!! :)
Will this work if you have a slope around the tree? I can see how this works easily when u have a pretty level working area but what do u do on a slope
Good question, Eric. This technique will work perfectly with a slope.
Nice
Thanks for your advice! Appreciate you are taking the time to show us with so much detail.
I have a question, I’m new into landscaping/gardening. I have a small tree in the middle of a 6ftby6ft area, mostly is surrounded by grass, I’m planning on doing something like this, smaller of course, but should I get rid off the grass and weeds around the tree, prep the ground with fabric and then toss the mulch on top or will it be ok just to cover whatever grass and weeds with mulch? I’m just worried the grass/weeds will start to come up through the mulch bed?
Again thank you!
Great question. I would NOT use landscaping fabric.....horrible product. Here is what I do highly recommend!! ruclips.net/video/HIWDPlaB6wY/видео.html I hope this helps!!
@@maxpatch67 thank you! Will do it this weekend :)
Awesome!! I'd love so see some pix how it turns out!!
I absolutely love this, and I have a question, if it’s alright. Once I’ve set my concrete, what about the grasses or other weeds that might be within the circle? When you did your project, since this is a no-dig project, did you lay down any landscape fabric, or did you spray some kind of grass/weed killer?
Great question, Robert! I hate landscaping fabric and have not used it for many years now on jobs. Here is my preferred method of weed control. ruclips.net/video/HIWDPlaB6wY/видео.html
What type and color of landscaping block from Lowe’s? How many did you need for project?
I can't remember how many this one used but they are almost a foot long each so that might help you estimate. Here is a link to one of the two colors available:www.lowes.com/pd/Flagstone-Allegheny-Retaining-Wall-Block-Common-4-in-x-11-in-Actual-4-in-x-11-2-in/4686343
Very easy technique. Thanks for sharing. How would this change if I had to make my border 3 or 4 blocks high?
I dunno, Ricardo...I don't think I'd use this technique if I wanted a short wall. I'd advise using some type of levelling method I believe.
Excellent idea! Gonna try this - not sure where to find the metal spikes tho?
www.lowes.com/pd/Grip-Rite-8-in-x-3-8-in-Spike/3610434
Please let me know if I can help you any more. Let me know what you think when you're finished! Have a great day, @kimkats.
Love this video! What's the best way work around large roots that poke out above ground?
You have different options. You could build the ring large enough so the roots aren't a problem. If that is feesible, then you could carefully choose a size where roots are not an issue all the way around. Another option is to fill in dirt around the area and build it up to the level of the roots so the border is built right on top of them. If you do this, fan out the dirt over a large area so there is not just a "lump" in the border. I hope this helps. Ler me know if you need anything else, Dennis.
What did you do with grass still inside the border. How did you remove the grass. I like your idea but i am creating many new bedding areas from grass areas in my back yard! Ty!
Excellent question...and I have the perfect technique for you! This is by far the best method: ruclips.net/video/HIWDPlaB6wY/видео.html Let me know if you have any more questions, Ok? Thanks for the question/comment Carolyn!
Great Video! I was wondering are the steps exactly the same if you use a different block? What happens when you get to the last stone and you need to cut the last one to fit?
Yes, you can use any rock, brick, block of your choice that you think looks good. At the end, use eye protection and use a hammer to shape the last block to the right length. You can whack away at it with the hammer or use a masonry chisel. You could also adjust the border shape a little to get the blocks to fit perfectly instead.
You do a great job making videos
Thanks. Actually my main job is a middle school teacher so that probably helps....plus a teacher friend of mine actually made this new video! I'll tell him. :)
Excellent video tutorial, definitely going to try it out, but I had one concern. If I didn't want the black rubber ring and I attach it to the ground in reverse, to remove after the concrete cures, wouldn't that leave a visible concrete ring above the grass, the same height as the black rubber ring, that the pavers sit on?
Yes, if you don't have the black plastic edge there, then the cement edge would be there. Cement does dull pretty quickly over time so it would not stand out at all over time. It works quite well to make it this way when attaching the plastic edge to the ground in reverse to make it removable. To make this easier, use the plastic spikes that come in bags and cut them in half with some pruning snippers. This makes them easily removable with pulling up your plastic edge from the ground.
Thanks for the video. Any suggestions for mulch beds that are on a bit of an incline? Do you recommend digging a trench at the bottom to make the pavers level/horizontal?
My pleasure, PMCRyan! The border works perfectly on slopes if made eactly how the video demonstrates. No, I don't recommend digging at all. :) Have a great day!!
Hi, I really like your video and it seems very possible for me to do by myself ... however, can I do this for an uneven surface too?
Yes. When you nail the plastic border down to the ground, you can level it out quite a bit by not putting the spikes in the low spots. So the edge will be pretty smooth and straight compared to your lumpy ground. If there is a huge dip or lump in the ground, then you could use your shovel and dirt to fix those bigger problems. If you don't mind your border curving around along the natural flow of the ground, then you can go ahead and just start the process as shown in the video.
Would the concrete hold up to the freeze & thaw cycles of Western Pa. winters?I'm worried about the ground freezing & lifting & cracking the concrete base under the blocks.
Mike, this is an excellent question and one that I would be interested in knowing too if I lived up there. Here is what I know. On my older video of this technique, I had people from several years ago, testify as to how happy they were with this border after multiple winters and these people lived in New England, Chicago, and Canada. That being said, I don't have personal experience building them up there and I do understand your concern.
@@maxpatch67 I'm in central Illinois and did this a month ago. Love it thus far! We'll see how it does through several season changes.
Would this method work on a small retaining wall? Like with 2 or 3 bricks high? What would you recommend? Thx
It might work, but I wouldn't recommend it. This is great for what it is, but going higher adds quite a bit of difficulty and needed skill in using traditional mortar between the layers.
Great Tutorial ! Question, can the paver ring be build with out the plastic black ring?
Yes!! Sort of!! You can make the plastic edge easily removable right after the cement cures. You can attach it to the ground in reverse so you can remove the spikes easily. Also, you don't need to buy the strong metal ones and you can just use the wimpy plastic ones that come in a bag with the edging. You might want to buy an extra bag of plastic ones. What I have done is cut the plastic spikes in half(I use hand garden clippers) so its easy to pound them in and pull them out also. Just wait a day or so until the cement has cured before pulling out the spikes and border. It needs to be mild air, like in the 50's for the cement to cure properly, so right now might not be the right time to make this border. If you make it in summer, the cement cures within a couple hours so the curing goes real fast. Let me know if you need any more help.
Hi I loved your video of no dig border..would you have any knowledge or idea on laying pavers without all that digging?
I don't do multiple layers because it is not leveled and could cause problem and I don't think it looks as good....however some viewers have done it and it seems to have worked great for them using landscaping block adhesive between the layers. Anything else I can help you with?
It's been one year since installed. I'm curious to see how it's holding up. I want to do this to all my flower beds (like around entire foundation plantings) but I have moles in my yard and I wonder how much damage they would do digging under this.
Ya, this border is in Lexington, Kentucky and it is in perfect condition. It is designed to last many years with this technique. I don't know of any borders that will stop moles, unfortunately. It sounds like you have some great ideas where to use this technique. You won't regret building this border. :) Have a great day, Kristy!!
I love your idea. Would it be possible to use dried felled trees that my husband cuts into small logs instead of the pavers?
You can certainly do that, but it would be a totally different technique and style. You would not need any of thee materials. Complications with your idea would be unevenness, not staying in place, and rotting over time. If you have a real rustic area, then this might look good, but if you have more formal landscaping, you wouldn't like it so much so it kind of just depends. I hope this helps, Marilee.
Thank you so much for this easy tutorial. I have a question, at what point do you remove the spikes? I assume you remove them after you lay the rocks down to keep the shape in place?
Great question. They just stay in the ground and are never seen again with the border built on top of them. I hope you have a good day, Ladyl!!
So, I've never done this before and moved into a house that desperately needs this on several trees.
How do I make sure I'm getting the correct amount of blocks? And how do I make sure when doing the circle that all blocks will fit without a gap? Please and thank you 💞
Mandy, figure that for each foot of border, you need one block and then just add them up. Just get 3 or 4 extra because its no fun being short and not able to get the work done. That gap is a challenge so you can take care of that by customizing how the last few fit in there by leaving little gaps in them to finish right or you can use a hammer, masonry chisel, and hand and eye protection and just hammer away at one block to make it fit in perfectly at the end with all the spaces tight together. Its not real difficult and kind of fun to hammer away at a cement block...you choose, but use eye and hand protection. I hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing! What size Quikrete bag did you use for your 5ft x 1ft example in the video? I see there are many sizes of Quikrete ranging from 40 to 90 lbs
This is the standard 50lb bag that I use from Lowes and it works for about 5 linear feet per bag. www.lowes.com/pd/QUIKRETE-50-lb-Fast-Setting-Concrete-Mix/3006121?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-bdm-_-bng-_-LIA_BDM_210_Concrete-Block-_-3006121-_-Local-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&ds_a_cid=119207829&msclkid=b36502b6c32713a719ae600d723c4e88&gclid=b36502b6c32713a719ae600d723c4e88&gclsrc=3p.ds I hope this helps, Alex. Have a great day!!
What should I do if I have a couple of big tree roots that have surfaced so that it makes it difficult to put a border?
The border in this video is pretty big. Can you make yours larger than where your roots are? If not, then that's a problem.
I really like this. How do you remove the border as the tree grows and you need to change the size of the ring over the years?
This border is considered to be permanent, so build it large(like the example in the video) and it will never need replaced.
Thank you so much for this! Because of some likely future construction I'll have to move my garden bed in a year or two. Is it ok to not include the concrete only so that the bricks will be easy to remove and reuse when that happens?
My pleasure, Hema. I'd suggest not building this border in your situation. Just use another more temporary technique. If you take the concrete out of this technique, you really lose major benefits it provides and then its not anything special any more. I hope this helps. Have a great day!
I want to do this around a tree that is pretty big. I measured out quite a bit but still have some roots extending over what I measured. How far out should I go from the root ending? Thank you.
Maria, my suggestion is that if you go out 5 or 6 feet from the trunk and there are still roots out there further beyond that then for those far out roots that are exposed, get some topsoil(not the stuff in bags from the store) and shovel it onto the ground around the roots and rake it around to level it nicely. You can make this circle as big as you want, but for looks and practicality, maybe 6 feet out from the trunk is reasonable. What do you think? Maybe a little bigger than that?
I had the same issue and cut the roots and removed them. This didn't affect the tree at all
Thinking about doing this project this weekend and doing the edging in reverse so I can pull it up after. Do you have a link for the 8 inch galvanized spikes at home depot?
You have a great idea and I have done this recently. There might be a bag of plastic spikes that come with your plastic edging that you can use for this reverse/removable method. To make it even easier, use some strong scissors or clippers and snip these plastic spikes in half. Also, you can buy bags of these spikes. The neat thing about this method is that you can reuse a shorter piece of plastic edging over and over and also resuse the spikes to it can save you money. You know what? I just looked at the Home Depot website and they only have the 8" ones in bulk/box, so I'm going to post a link here for the cheaper plastic ones for you that you should use after you snip them in half: www.homedepot.com/p/ProFlex-8-in-Nylon-Spiral-Landscape-Anchoring-Spikes-24-Per-Pack-1989N-24C/205966606 I hope this helps, @robstone5010.
What would you recommend using to also add a cap along the top of the border?
I sure think you could, C. Hale. There is no reason not to. Landscaping adhesive would work fine for this additional step. If you get yours finished and want to send me finished pix to share with others, please send them with email to tim@timvogelaar.com. Thanks!
Hello Max Patch, can I use a paver sand instead of the fast setting concrete mix? Thanks
You can, but you will lose some of the main advantages of this border technique which are height(to make it stand out and appear more sculptural), strength/stability, and it goes a long a way as a weed barrier for aggressive weeds and grass like Bermuda Grass that we have here in Nashville.
Hey man, where do you get the galvanized spikes? I didn't see it in description below? Good work by the way.

Omg thank you. I just cut out the grass of one tree and almost killed myself. Haha i have two more to do. Think ill do this 😜.
Wow, you won't regret making this tree ring!!
Could you add a second layer to make it taller? Just put more concrete on top or would you do it? Thanks!
You would need to use either landscaping block adhesive or mix up some traditional mortar. I have not done it because I would not like the way it looks as much.
This might be a simple or dumb question but are you just cutting the edging once you get the length you want? I noticed it is a 60ft kit you bought so just checkig
I love this idea but what about the grass/weeds coming up from the mulch. Do we need a layer of tarp down?
Ryan, great question. I would NOT use any fabric. I used to and it created many problems over the years. Here is the technique I use and I highly recommend for you to use: ruclips.net/video/HIWDPlaB6wY/видео.html I hope this helps. I'm really glad you asked!! Have a good day, Ryan.
Does the bottom part of the block get wet in this method? Im worried that the under side of the block will stay dry and hence wont stick
Yes. The dry mix acts like a sponge and the water will absorb under there. When you see me spraying the blocks, the water is dripping down the sides and soaking the mix under there. If you are unsure, just spray it longer with the mist until you are sure.
