I work in the US with lots of great Indian guys but typically they don't know about home maintenance and repairs because they grew up with the luxury of hiring low-cost contractors. I am happy to see your very good analysis and description of performing this task!
My wife is Indonesian and many times cooks salted fish and very spicy food that will fill the whole house. I was looking for a new microwave with 400 cfm, but after seeing this, you might have convinced me to buy a hood instead. Very good video, thanks!!!
Only problem I see (besides the current $700 Amazon / Kobe price tag), is where do you put the displaced microwave? Assume you need to buy a new one, since that old one is a dedicated over-the-stove model.
Thank you very much for taking time and running the demo. This is my next project for this summer it would be nice to see a little bit more inside of how you did the actual installation but overall great video and thank you for sharing.
OMG I have been looking for a video just like this! I was going to buy this exact range hood. Then I saw the microvisor so I thought I might get that. but now I will just keep saving my dollars and get the Kobe range hood this is amazing!
I would love to know how you found the Kobe and why you chose it over the Magic Lung Ventahood or any other hood. I think it looks great in your kitchen.
Thank you for the video. I'm planning to do the same thing in a house my wife and I just bought. We will have to check that we can get more of the back splash tile to cover the bare wall previously covered by the microwave. For those concerned about the microwave, if you can't place it on the countertop, donate it to the salvation army and buy a new one. Microwaves are not that expensive.
Thank you so much Pankaj! I was debating whether to replace my OTR microwave with more powerful (400cfm) microwave range; or getting a powerful 600-750 cfm range hood and a smaller countertop microwave. Your video answered my question. 400CFM vented is NOTHING! For my spicy cooking, I think I really need to go for high CFM (at least 600 CFM) range hood and get a smaller countertop microwave. Thanks again, Pankaj!
Looks nice but I hate how so many hoods have the buttons on bottom where they are going to get greasy rather than on front. I'm sure they do it for aesthetics but I'm utilitarian.
Excellent demonstration!! I am also looking for replacing my OTR oven with the range hood. Could you please mention the brand and price of the hood you have installed, if no problem?
My parents have a similar type of range hood previously. One big draw back is the gaps where the air is drawn through gets filled with grease over time and is a real pain to clean.
That's not a drawback, that's by design. They are supposed to catch the grease to keep the motor clean, otherwise the exhaust fan would get clogged with grease. Other types of good have replaceable filters but then you have to buy new filters when they get dirty.
Hi Pankaj! Thanks for sharing this. We are also shopping for a under cabinet range hood and have circled it down to this Kobe hood, Broan, Zephyr and Z-line. I wanted to find out what your experience has been with this!
Thank so much for the detailed video. I am also thinking to replace my microwave with range hood as our microwave broke suddenly. Whats the brand name of your range hood as mine also have a rectangular vent opening.
Hi thank you for the video. What brand of range hood is this? Also, when you take microwave out, and keeping cabinet the same, is not the hood sitting too far from the cooktop for effective work?
do all the hoods have option to install this way ? im looking at cosmo brand. Reasonable price for 900 cfm but they say it has top vent option. Not able to confirm. Brand you used is looks expensive to me.
Hello, thank you for the video. We have a question for you. Are the four screws on the top enough to hold the hood unit securely? Or did you use something else to support the unit?
Sorry about missing that part man. It was a tricky installation and i was so busy to make it work, i forgot to shoot that part. And i did not have any tiles in the area left behind after we removed the Microwave. So i just filled the Microwave backpanel holes and painted the remaining space with the same red accent color that i had on top of cabinet.
Hey Pankaj thanks for the instructions pretty useful, just one question did you removed the panel before installing the range wood the one that microwave was resting on? Or did you just left it?
I want to do the same but was wondering the same thing. I have a double oven now I was wondering if I should change that to microwave at the top and oven at the bottom. I have a cook too not a full range.
Hi Pankaj, did you install a make up air damper and backdraft damper for your range hood? Are these important for range hood installation? As for cleaning, is it sufficient just to dish wash the baffle filters? Thanks.
Yes. there was some gap at the back in my case. So I used a duct collar (www.homedepot.com/p/3-1-4-in-x-10-in-Rectangular-Stack-Duct-Starting-Collar-SCF3-25X10/100139382). And yes its sufficient to dish wash the filter
No make up air damper installed. But these homes have pressure balancing fresh air intake at the furnace to pull the fresh air from outside via different filter. This also opens when whole house fan runs. But as per code, make up air damper may be required if this is above 400CFM. check local regulations. In general we never have to run this in full speed, always in Quiet mode, or rarely Low speed. Also if weather permits we open a window in dining area so fresh air pulled from there which helps better exhaust.
I was trying to decide between range hood or microwave and your video helped me. I am also indian and we need good ventilation with our kinda food. Can u give me more info on the kind of hood u have and where u purchased it please.
Glad to know this helped. I Used KOBE Range Hoods CHX9130SQB-1 Brillia in this video (amzn.to/2iPdsnZ). Also compare the prices on Hayneedle.com. Sometimes they are cheaper...
Thanks for appreciation Sanchit. I am not an expert about this man. I used KOBE Range Hoods CHX9130SQB-1 Brillia mainly coz it had nice reviews and good price and had a vent at the backside. It has been almost an year and its still running great. But i really miss a timer option in this model.
Thanks for the reply back . We are looking at range hoods (undercabinet, vent out at the back) that work well for indian style cooking. I will checkout Kobe one that you used since you said it has worked out well for you. I was also looking at Zephyr Typhoon.
Pankaj, could you show how to use aluminum tape to seal the rectangular vent between the rear of the range hood and the inner wall opening? Does the rectangular piece get inserted into the wall opening?
I cant show it now as the vent is there already. But in my case i was not too sure that i could seat it properly from inside. So i went outside the house and applied tape from outside anyways. If you have more gap at the back, then an adapter like below will help www.homedepot.com/p/Speedi-Products-10-in-x-3-25-in-x-6-in-Galvanized-Sheet-Metal-Range-Hood-Straight-Boot-Adapter-SM-RH3106-SB/202907196?MERCH=REC-_-SearchPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-202907196-_-N
We are still using the same OTR microwave on our counter top right now as it can also be used that way. The exhaust fan that throws air at the back does not run when we just use the microwave. We have a separate button that runs the fan. But it looks too big on counter top and we will eventually replace it with a smaller unit (around 1.5 cubit feet size)
Hello Pankaj, I was sooo close to ordering this Kobe hood last night. That is until I checked some measurements. Can you tell me what the clearance is between the top of your range to the bottom of the Kobe hood? The manufacturer states a min of 26 inches and max of 30 inches from the range surface. I am below the minimum by 3 inches.
Likely because those OTR ventilating microwaves lack the power to exhaust the smell and fumes generated by stir frying and similar cooking. A range hood with a powerful blower is way better.
The top vent cover and the rear adapter i have shown in the video was included in the package. However in my house, there was still about 9 inches of gap at the back AFTER positioning the hood. So i had to add one more adapter like below at the back: www.homedepot.com/p/Speedi-Products-10-in-x-3-25-in-x-6-in-Galvanized-Sheet-Metal-Range-Hood-Straight-Boot-Adapter-SM-RH3106-SB/202907196?MERCH=REC-_-SearchPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-202907196-_-N

This is a huge improvement! Our microwave is of zero use to us and we could use an improved exhaust.
Thank you very much for taking time and running the demo. This is my next project for this summer it would be nice to see a little bit more inside of how you did the actual installation but overall great video and thank you for sharing.
You saved me a lot of money and frustration by showing just how much better a fume hood is.
So no more microwave in kitchen? Where did you put it if you got a new one?
What is the brand of that hood? Is it still good?
OMG I have been looking for a video just like this! I was going to buy this exact range hood. Then I saw the microvisor so I thought I might get that. but now I will just keep saving my dollars and get the Kobe range hood this is amazing!

I agree. I guess its better to invest in a good and quiet 600+ cfm hood. On a long run, you will be happy about your decision.
Helpful informative video. Liked the rice cooker test. I am dumping the microwave and replacing it with hood.
Good job I am planning to replace my microwave with range hood. This gave me a good idea very helpful thank you.
Very nice educational video on range hoods for customers!
thanks for appreciating. It means a lot coming from ZLINE Kitchen :-)
Hi Pankaj, just wondering where did you place your microwave after replacing to range hood
You should have added shots of HOW to install not just the end results.
Pankaj, where did you install your microwave when you replaced it??
Probably somewhere on a countertop
Moved it to the window cutout that previously housed the air conditioner.
Thank You So Much .. This is very helpful we are also changing over the Range Microwave
Looks nice but I hate how so many hoods have the buttons on bottom where they are going to get greasy rather than on front. I'm sure they do it for aesthetics but I'm utilitarian.
Wow...very well demonstrated and nearly explained....🎉
Where did you keep the over the range microwave after installing range hood
Nice work Pankaj! We have been thinking of kitchen remodel and this video helped

Wish I could see the carjack platform in action...
Very well made video, Pankaj! Thanks!
Thanks man. You showed me something i needed to see🤓
Very nice video, how much clearance distance you kept from top of the countertop to the bottom of hood? I have exact same kitchen like you.
Hi Pankaj! Thanks for sharing this. We are also shopping for a under cabinet range hood and have circled it down to this Kobe hood, Broan, Zephyr and Z-line. I wanted to find out what your experience has been with this!
I can feel your pain those little vents under the microwave is not made for our food.
Where did you put the microwave ?
I was hoping to see how you sealed the inside of the vent to the wall as you said needed to be done.
Thank you for the video!
Do you know where it’s made in?

Good video, very informative
Hello, thank you for the video. We have a question for you. Are the four screws on the top enough to hold the hood unit securely? Or did you use something else to support the unit?

Sorry about missing that part man. It was a tricky installation and i was so busy to make it work, i forgot to shoot that part. Pankaj, where did you get the Microwave cover/lid? I'd like to get one as a temporary solution.
Its Microvisorhood Microvisor Mini Hood - Stainless Steel (amzn.to/2ky3EzV)
Dong Xu thanks for asking, I was looking for this too! Pankaj, this is good if you can post this in the description.
@@pankajchandel3349 sold out:(
@@narcssius - still available but not on Amazon. Too expensive though.
Hey Pankaj thanks for the instructions pretty useful, just one question did you removed the panel before installing the range wood the one that microwave was resting on? Or did you just left it?
i have regular vent but its not over hanging the stove so smoke escape. so can i still this on regular using sheet metal screws?
Could you provide the range hood that you used.
I want to do the same but was wondering the same thing. I have a double oven now I was wondering if I should change that to microwave at the top and oven at the bottom. I have a cook too not a full range.

does anyone know if this type of rangehood can handle smoke coming from an oven when you open the door to grilling meat?
Very informative 👍
Hey Pankaj thank you for an awesome video. Which undercabinet range hood do you suggest for indian style of cooking ?
Thanks for appreciation Sanchit. I am not an expert about this man. I used KOBE Range Hoods CHX9130SQB-1 Brillia mainly coz it had nice reviews and good price and had a vent at the backside. It has been almost an year and its still running great. But i really miss a timer option in this model.

How did you seal from outside? The wall opening looks pretty small. Did you have to take out the damper and then put it back on?
In my case there was enough opening to get my hands inside. But make sure to wear gloves as there can be sharp edges inside
I have the exact same issue with my over the range microwave, I'm thinking of doing the switch too. Are you guys using a regular microwave now???
We are still using the same OTR microwave on our counter top right now as it can also be used that way. The exhaust fan that throws air at the back does not run when we just use the microwave. Thanks for the video. But i can't appreciate the video because there is not much details how to do it.
That microwave sounds like a jet engine
Very nice informative video
Really “sucking alot” 😂
I hope you didn't block or close the circular vent because this hood still needs a place to push the air....(e.g., the vent hole). 😤😤😤
Why were you replacing the microwave with a range hood?
Likely because those OTR ventilating microwaves lack the power to exhaust the smell and fumes generated by stir frying and similar cooking. A range hood with a powerful blower is way better.
@@DBVintage Then you lose the microwave and its space savings.
Was top vent seal cover and rear vent adapter (TVC20) included in the package? Did you have to order them separately from the vendor?
The top vent cover and the rear adapter i have shown in the video was included in the package. However in my house, there was still about 9 inches of gap at the back AFTER positioning the hood. So i had to add one more adapter like below at the back:
