She originally wrote this for Rod Stewart. That's why she sang it the way she did in the beginning.
She sings it super
She could alter the timber of her voice, sometimes ultra smooth and sometimes grainey and rough...this lady was something else!
I know right! I was watching this thinking wow she sounds a bit off in that intro, atleast for her, then boom just starts singing like the original recording. Phoenomenal man, just unreal, if you sing maybe you can understand how difficult it is to do what she is doing. Blows me away!!
Me too. First impressions were that her sound was off. After the second listen I realise it's amazing. She's doing the intro Rod Stewart style - and it's perfect. What a lady!
@@mikeevers9079 Yup, I believe the story goes that she originally wrote this with the intent to have Rod record it in the style and manner she displays at the beginning of this performance. She ended up keeping the song and recording it herself, as we now know. 🙂
@@SahiraSound song was written by Donna and produced by Giorgio. Check your facts
@@SahiraSound I'm far from being a "dick," it was your comment that I interpreted as being aggressive. If not intended in that manner, then I apologize for being short with you. No harm intended. We are here because we all admire Donna and/or her work, and have that in common. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
THE WAY SHE GOES FROM "ROD STEWART" TO DONNA SUMMER WITH THAT VOICE, CANNOT BE DUPLICATED!! LEGENDARY SINGER!
I knew I wasn’t the only one who heard that rod Stewart vibe
All CAPS
She was amazing
Wrote song for Rod but was scared to give it to him
CORRECT
she actually sounds better live here than she does on the recording, which is a rare find! What a goddess
True but change the lyrics some.
Left out tonight it's all the way.
exactly! She’s so talented
Megan Beus: She's singing the beginning of the song in this sort of country style because this song was written by her for Rod Stewart. But he never recorded the song. So, she did it herself.
I agree. No auto tuning here
That why I rather listen to alive version of a song.
Love Donna Summer since I was 13! I'm 60 now and still listening to Donna in July 2023❤❤❤❤
it's Aug. 2023. I'm 75 now (born the same year as Donna and her husband, Bruce.) And I still listen to her EVERY DAY! Incomparable in every way imaginable!
I'm 28 and i'm Jealous i didn't live in the era that music lifted our souls THIS HIGH
Im only 15 years old and I just wanna say music before social media was way better and captivating
The introduction is an homage to Rod Stewart who she wrote this for, but kept it for herself. We are lucky she did because we have another beautiful song of hers to cherish.
Really??????? 😲
It sounds like a Rod Stewart song, especially the intro.
Did not know that it was written for Rod. I'm glad she kept it, and he didn't need it at the time because he had it going on with plenty of his own stuff. They were both at the top of their game when this was out.
@@cjay233 Right! That was meant to. Rod could've perfectly recorded this song at some point.
Thanks for the info!
I wasn’t expecting that raspy and vibrant tone, not even breaking the voice
And then she switches to dance, making it bright, and sounding so incredible
She said she originally wrote the song for Rod Stewart & thats why she was singing it like if Rod did it but she was to afraid to give him the song per her if you watch the whole version of the VH1
She made singing look so effortless. She's incomparable.
Wonderful
Queen Donna Rules
My thoughts exactly. Completely natural and effortless as real gifts always are. Rest in power our endlessly beautiful Queen. -agw
What a woman, God Bless you, gone far to soon x
Oh Karen Carpenter is....
The definition of a voice that's a gift from God.
I saw her live in the 90s at Westbury and she was amazing...Why can't people like this just live forever. RIP Queen...
Donna Summer was a real person unlike many celebrities and obviously a woman with an incredible voice .
I'm here in 2020, I'm still listening to the incomparable Donna Summer. She had a voice of angel & could sing her ars off. RIP DONNA SUMMER🌺🌹🌸💐🍀
Yes❣️❣️❣️
Here in 2023.
She was a beautiful lady and her singing was so good
Donna Summer was one of the greatest singers ever! She was a lady of distinction and sophistication and will always be in our hearts!!
She was 51 in 1999. She did not look it. We lost her too soon.
Viva the memory and music of Donna Summer!
I had this video and she explains that she wrote this song for Rod Stewart, but she decided to keep ot to herself, so she was going to sing ot the way she thougth Rod would do it, and then sing it the way she did, and it turns out she had a voice for every style... amazing, rest in peace
Who's here is 2019 still enjoying her music?
A 53 YEAR OLD MAN LEARNING THE TECNIQUE. SHE IS GOD'S VOICE.
I am, one of the greatest in my opinion, I know her from Munich 197~
🏹❤️
2021
The original track from '79 where she holds that note for 17 seconds is remarkable! But then again, everything she sang was remarkable! This disco performance of "Dim All the Lights" is so beautiful starting off in a ballad format....then changing up to disco beat!
The first minute reminds me really much like the unplugged version of Can't let go from Mariah Carey.
Pure perfection! Noone can touch this woman as far as class, talent, sweetness. She was the whole package...hands down.
Absolutely
Vocally her ability is truly in a class by itself. Omg her technique is stunning! She blows me away.
As a kid in 70s Ireland looooved Donna Summer .... Remember going to see the film "The Deep" which she sang title track .. gutted when she died in 2012 @ 64 ..... Queen of disco gone but not forgotten RIP 👃➕.
I'm not certain that I have ever seen a singer use the microphone so effortlessly as both an extension of herself as well as an instrument. Just fantastic.
I have never ever heard her voice with this rasp. She truly was an exemplary, albeit underrated vocalist.
It's in style of Rod Stewart. She originally wrote it for him.
Donna summer was not underated she was the queen of disco music a superstar with so many hits and such a perfect voice she also worked very closely with gergio mirroder
Donna lived near ground Zero during 9-11. She developed lung cancer from the toxins in the air and died far too young. Perhaps this is why her voice was raspy.
RIP Donna.
💚🧚♀️
And we must end the terror imposed on us through false flag 🚩events. From Waco to 9-11 to Las Vegas shooting and beyond...
They’re gonna keep doing it till they have is under full tyranny.
We must say no.
We do not consent.
@@loveinthemidst5841 I am inclined to totally agree with you! Donna herself admitted that exposure to the deadly asbestos from the buildings was the cause of her disease. God rest the soul of this great and irreplaceable lady!!
Yes RIP Donna!
I love ‘State of Independence’. That’s an anthem for our times.
💚🧚♀️
Nothing takes me back to the 70's faster...Donna had a voice that needed NO studio correction..few can carry the "recorded version" to live...but her voice is straight power and makes short work of hitting note for note..amazing
Miss her music..When I was 10 years old "On The Radio" Album came out. I wanted to be Donna Summer so much!! My dad was in the Army and we had moved near Fort Hood TX. I missed my friends so bad. I was the lonely new girl. Kinda dumpy, kinda dorky but Donna Summer visited me every night on my turntable and I was a transported to a beautiful Disco.
That intro was just everything.......wish she could have sung it a little longer. Its very rare to have live versions that are better than the studio/album cuts
OMG that intro brings tears to my eyes just knowing she is not with us anymore.
At this stage, she has sung what 4 or 5 songs by now that would leave most people unable to sing anymore. Phoemenal.
RIP Donna Summer you are amazing. You could sing any genre anytime. Her voice will never be forgotten. I get so tired of queen of disco title. That's only a small part of your journey.
she sang every thing pop, rock gospel, r and b ballads, you name it.
Her voice aged so beautifully. I almost like her more in her mid to later years than her early sound. She really took care of her instrument.
Favorite female singer of all time!!!...Nobody can touch her!!...RIP...LOVE U ...D.
In Donna mode now!! All day long listening to Donna now! Continue to RIHP World.Class Disco Empress!! 🌎 💘 🎶 😍 🎼 💃 👗 👡 👼 👩 👨
Yes. I miss this wonderful lady!!
Singing "Dim All the Lights" as a slower ballad at the start (so much slower than the '79 beginning),, so beautiful in its own way,,,,then, the change up to disco, the song's original beat version, was pure genius, and the audience loved it! Some songs are not fit to perform for that rhythmic change, but Donna Summer certainly pulled it off! What a talent she was!
The world was so lucky that Donna Summer kept Dim all the lights fot her to sing. That song was a big hit for her. 30 something years later and we still love her and her music. Donna Summer and her music still lives today. Some were all over the world a gay disco club is still playing her music. RIP - DONNA SUMMER.
John this album came out in 79 so that would make it 41yrs a go, I was just 13 at that time but just loved any kind of music, and she was just my favorite, till today and I love rock, and pop music.
She will always be my Queen!!! Not just the Queen of Disco/Dance but the Queen that showed me all these different kinds of Music!! As someone said before... She could sing anything in pure Perfection!! The most versatile singer this planet has ever known in my humble opinion. What a Fuc.ing Voice!!!!! I will always miss her the most!!! All my Love is always with you beautiful Donna!!! XXX little Paulo XXX
Donna Summer’s mic was ALWAYS on! The sounds amazing for this entire concert and often times better than the original recording.
Loved Donna Summer since I was 5 years old listening to my mom's On the Radio album, I still have it, I played it for my kids when they were 5 years old, they will play it for their kids when they are 5 years old, couldn't imagine growing up in the 70s without her music. REST IN PARADISE QUEEN 🙌🙏🙏🙏💗💗💗💗💗
i always love watching her sing and how she has to hold the microphone far from her because that's HOW STRONG her voice is!!!! ^_^ She will ALWAYSSSS be a POWERHOUSE!!!!
Wow ❤what a voice, miss the Queen .
🎉🎉❤❤😊😊Supernatural talent !! And very easy on the eyes !!😍😍

Can’t believe how this music has withstood the time …..it’s surreal …and just beautiful
Some people said that Donna Summer couldn't sing. She sold millions of records and won several Grammy awards and World music awards. Who agrees with me those people were wrong ? Music City Tennessee loves your music. Donna Summer
You'd have to be deaf to think she couldn't sing. She has the best voice of all time!
The brightest star in the sky is often the first to go out. This was Donna Summer !
This chick is brilliant! Truly a national treasure.
I remember my parents listening to her when I was a kid and of course being a kid I didn’t realize just how special her voice was. I just knew she was fun to dance to. My Mom was diagnosed with 3 months to live this year and people kept saying play her meditation music. Blah! My Mom had me playing her Donna Summer, Bee Gees, Abba, The Eagles, Michael Jackson etc. In my Moms last hours she wasn’t mediating her way to Heaven, she was a dancing queen and I know my Mom wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. ❤Miss you Mommy.
One in a million...she was magic..beautiful lady..beautiful voice..beyond amazing
My gosh that woman had a set of pipes on her .No effort .... no one today can compare
When Donna left the stage for the last time she took a truly unique gift of her Special voice with her .I haven't heard anyone come close then or since .God rest Donna Summer ✨🎶🎤💃🏽🕊️🌟
I am so glad we have her on video …. Forever.

There was no other female disco style singer that even came close to her....she was the Queen
she was so unique in all she did, miss her
You are so true . . .
Right after her first few hits, I saw her sing a jazz tune live on a TV show and was blown away at her voice. She's one of my favorite singers and this song, along with Spring Affair are my favorite Donna Summer songs. Miss you dearly Ms Summer!!!
One of the most beautiful women to ever grace a stage. Oh how I loved her. Still do really.
Her doc was overwhelming. Forever my earthly crush.

She was amazing! Rest well, Darlin'!
there will be only one disco queen, long live the queen
2023 and I still miss the uniquely talented Ms. Summer. I loved every song of hers, but this is my alltime favorite. I know she is in Heaven and one of God's special angels
I hate when some people say the Queen of disco...Donna was more than this❤
I was sitting in Ellis Island having a beer, back in 2008, and one of Donna Summer’s songs came on. I looked at the guy next to me and asked “Why isn’t she singing here?”. It wasn’t long after that I heard she was coming to Las Vegas to sing.
So glad I saw her live twice and once at an outdoor venue just listening from the parking lot. One of my all time favorites.
Truly a class act and a true talent. A loss for the music world. She was incredible and had a lot more music to give. I purchased the DVD concert. It is fabulous!
Miss Donna so much, what an incredible voice, part of my childhood, such a sad loss, amazing talent, you sang through my relationships brightened shitty days made me smile thank you amazing lady

I remember being in the disco and dancing to a lot of her songs. She's had so many hits one after the other always on the airways. She was such an incredible person and such an incredible artist. She had an incredible range and a wonderful voice that could go from low to high without one little crack. ❤️ Beautiful voice and a beautiful woman. She is sadly missed by us all. 🪻🍷🙏
I've been listening to the album version on repeat in the gym for the last 90 minutes. Just got on the treadmill and threw this on, it's so much better than I could've hoped for 🙂
