Why would you do this in your 60’s? This makes no sense…If a few thousand dollars is throwing your dream house into a tailspin, this tells me you never could have afforded it in the first place. No construction project is ever under or on budget. These people are barely making it in the first place. Should have ever built this house…

@@balance3201 I do, actually, as I was in exactly their position last year. My guess is three things: (1) they rented such a large house because they needed a place big enough to store all their possessions. They were moving from a large house and into their new house, which is also large. Renting a large house is actually cheaper than renting self -storage space, plus you save a lot by simplifying the removal costs by having only one destination for your possessions. (2) A new build takes a minimum of a year to complete, and people rent houses that are large enough to let them continue to live their lives during that year. They have daughters that come to visit, so why not rent a house that is big enough to allow for that. At their age, why would they want to put their entire lives on hold for a year when they don't have to. (3) Renting a large house is not much more expensive than renting a small house, so the cost benefit of renting a smaller property will undoubtedly have been outweighed by the saving on renting storage space and the life-benefit of allowing them to continue as a family throughout the build. As to running out of money, plenty of people were caught out by rising prices of building materials and building services arising from the pandemic. Are they dullards for not anticipating the pandemic? On that basis, we are all dullards except, perhaps, you.

@@philiprandall1399 very detailed reply thanks. Yes one can put their life on hold if it means they don't go bankrupt. It's a want want want society but I'm afraid it doesn't work like that. A small terrace costs 700 max to rent that's a saving of 1k a month! Storage? Stick it in a container on the build site.
Daughter s need to visit? How about sleeping on the sofa for a few days?
I could go on but sure you get my drift. I've built myself and made sacrifices and even though costs went up from my forecast thankfully I still stayed under budget.
      Go figure.

Building a house very rarely comes without having to face obstacles, especially when it comes to the budget. John and Julia had a dream and John designed a beautiful house. The family were hands-on throughout the project and did not give up! Kudus to them! You have a lovely home. Let the difficulties you experienced go and enjoy the tangible and very lovely outcome! You deserve it!

They are getting older yet they build the master bedroom on the second floor, how does that make any sense. He’s an architect and should know prices like the back of his hand and how does it make any sense to downsize for more money than what you got for your bigger house. Also they want to retire and it seems they have absolutely no savings left, how is there a smart decision. There’s nothing extraordinary about the house they built and I can’t see them enjoying it knowing how much grief they went through while building it.

    • @Jamie.Richards

Having no money left is literally the point of the final chat and wasn't intended. Why would anyone commit their life savings to something that they didn't think would work? Especially an expert in building houses.
He priced the build before the pandemic. To go 3% over budget when some materials have doubled in cost and labour was delayed for months shows he was bang on and had a contingency.
They also designed in a downstairs bedroom with a shower room, which could switch to be their room long term and could be adjusted.

Life will be okay. They can sell a house if need be or borrow money from another source. At the end of the day, sometimes to build your own home problems arise and costs escalate, but that's the risk you take.
The house is pretty to me but the main thing is, if they love living it for however long they have it, then good job.
