As a Captain's reaction to a crewmember perceiving something improbable goes, that was great. Very calm, rational, and confident in his officer's ability
In universe he's 1 of the Union's top people but had a mental break after getting chucked. He eventually got over it and regained the confidence of the admirals which is how he got the Orville and in the alt universe where his marriage/divorce didn't happen he was in charge of a major starbase. He jokes but he's still a hardass military CO when he needs to be.
I love that when Gordon cautions about Pies, Captain Mercer is deadly serious about it. "Anything is possible watch for Pies, seltzer bottles, balloon animals stay alert."
I’m thinking, in this case, clowns find comedy by taking people by suprise, and, in this case with an unidentified human aboard with unknown intentions or capabilities and given its motif, I think it’s an alright statement to be extra cautious around the space clowns tricks. Or it’s just a regular fucking bit, I don’t know...
"Let's check the security camera" wait... the first spaceship to have CC TV security cameras... that just strips away any plot armor for shenanigans onboard.
IThere have been plots in Star Trek equally as ridiculous and dumb. If I recall correctly there was an episode where they found a planet where everyone and everything was perpetually stuck in 1920’s prohibition era Chicago, all the men dressed as old school mobsters with tommy guns and all the women dressed as flappers. And the excuse for all this was a ship crashed and the inhabitants of the planet found a book on prohibition era Chicago and built their whole civilization around it. Something like that.
Humans are psychologically predisposed to be afraid of something that’s human shape but also has non human characteristics. It’s called the uncanny valley and that’s why so many people are afraid of clowns, mimes, dolls, ect.
@The Carnivore Emperor - it's a context thing. Remember, by tradition when you crank the little toy box, the music plays "Pop goes the weasel" but what pops out is a clown.
@@kegginstructure A theory as to the origin of the jack-in-the-box is that it comes from the 14th-century English prelate Sir John Schorne, who is often pictured holding a boot with a devil in it. According to folklore, he once cast the devil into a boot to protect the village of North Marston in Buckinghamshire.
Remember that time when someone didn't realize you could capture video on your computer playing from any stream service and instead recorded something with their potato phone instead?
Whenever Scott's blinking a lot, you can tell he's trying not to laugh. He was blinking so much during that pies line. Justifiably so because I was cackling.
Just throwing it out there, if Bortus or Isaac were in that hallway that clown would not have made it to the end of the hallway. Isaac would have opened fire on it and Bortus would have turned its skull into a toilet

Yeah, She has super strength so things like that don't scare her, but taking responsibility and being in charge does in this. It's good that the crew have their strengths and weaknesses.
Ya know its kind of sad how people think of clowns these days. Though there have been some real wackos who wore clown costumes out there, they were originally intended to be funny and fun. Now days there is so much pop culture painting them all as psychos at worse and creeps at best that a whole profession has been demonized. The reasons people had leading to this are not entirely wrong but its still sad.
The way the clown just leans in before actually running is a scary touch.
yeah that was brilliant
Is it? Because really that’s what most people do when they start to run from a standstill.
@@Shadowkey392not like that

They say the Straight Man is the funniest character of all.
Ed’s a great captain.
@tom quigley Perhaps the person who thinks this clip has anything at all to do with Trump should be questioning themselves.
It's pretty logical, you're on a space ship with a bunch of aliens and a robot with crazy things happening on a monthly basis

I love John’s reaction (“wwwhut?”) and his nervous pacing throughout the scene, peeking around Kelly’s shoulers. And Bortus’ “I...see the clown.”
The way he reacts to seeing the clown, that felt very genuine. The fear and insecurity in John's voice is spot on.
"Hobo clowns are the worst, cause they're hungry". Lol
John:"Big red fro. Lots of makeup. big ol floppy shoes. Scary as balls."
Gordon: "Wow, your describing my mom."
Me: LMAO
Funny

Love the stereotype denial where you think its all in alaras head then the clown appears on the security logs.
Even the empty chasm of space cannot stop.... *THE CLOWNS*

He delivers that line with such sincerity
They calmly live among a ship with many ET's but they are scared of clowns! :0)
ETs are part of the natural order. Clowns emphatically are not.
Well john is
The ET’s are supposed to be there, the Clown is not
When they saw the clown dissappear on the cameras I was half expecting it to appear on the bridge.
I was half expecting it to be closeup on the camera kind of jumpscare
bro this episode was so scary, random, confusing, and funny at the same time

Especially when he said “Balloon Animals” 😂😂
Hobo clowns are the most dangerous because they're hungry
This is definitely can happen in Star Trek and Doctor Who :) Yup this is Star Trek back to classy form :) I miss the old ones their fun :)
