  • During this year's RAP Orlando, I was pleasantly surprised to find Kevin Barden of Surge Marine Life at the Two Little Fishies booth. I've been following his career for a while, and for those of you who have been keeping up with my work, you'll know I've reported on his advancements and achievements over the years, blue hippo tang, hatchery manager for yellow tangs etc. Naturally, I had to check out his latest masterpiece.
Kevin showcased an All-In-One (AIO) system at the booth, featuring Julian's personal corals from his home aquarium and to top it off, he introduced a new batch of his latest release: Scopas and Purple Tang hybrids.
Check out the video to learn more about these stunning tangs. I know these are bit pricey at the moment and I understand that it's not for everyone but if you’re interested in getting one for yourself, use the promo code AFISHIONADO to receive a significant discount on his website, surgemarinelife.com .
    Enjoy!

I'm so happy to see people breeding and raising fish for aquariums instead of stealing from the ocean. They live longer too.

Except for yellow tang s i take a very big sustainable, wild caught, one any Day over one of those sickly domestic ones

@@rhombifer566 Those of us that live in Hawaii are seeing less and less of our beautiful reef fish as poachers are raping our reefs. When they get caught, they just dump all the beautiful fish in the trash to die . Sad

The biota rep didn't believe he said 5k per fish. Lol
    Just rewind it. 😂

If it's me (interviewer) you are referring to, yea, I was a little bit surprised, but somewhat expected that as well. Look at yurple at 10k and poma lab 's Hybrid angels for a similar rate. I just hope that with time, it will all come down and affordable for all.

Wonder if he has or will try captive breeding of long nose black tangs, Zebrasoma rostratum?
Although some of these fish are out of my budget, I am glad more fish are being captive bred. Not all captive bred fish are expensive I personally have captive bred cosmic gobies from biota and love them. Plus I had never heard of them prior to biota releasing them.
Thanks for sharing as it’s nice to see such advancements being made in the hobby.

That would be absolutely amazing. I also think and hope that as the fish gets more common, the price will go down. Look at Gramma dejongi (Cuban basslet), for example, it used to sell for 2000 or more, and now it sells around 500 while the wild counterparts are sold for 2 to 3000 USD in Europe.
Honestly, i think that Zebrasoma roastratum is a doable project since the Zebrosoma is pretty much road mapped with purple and yellow.
I absolutely love how things are progressing in our hobby. As more and more breeders get involved, I hope to see the majority of the fish that import have a captivebred counterpart option in my lifetime. Wishful thinking, I know 😆

I expected something similar in numbers after yurple going for 10000 retail. Collectors are gathering these hybrids, it seems like. I think in time, it will come down to more manageable amounts.

I have a yellow Scopas Tang. It was created by breeding a yellow tang with a Scopas. Anyone want to buy him for 10k? 😊

@bxchris haha thanks. I guess I'm kind of used to the prices of the f1 lines of hybrid species. Heck, one of my first interviews 12, 13 years ago was about 30000 dollars, peppermint angelfish 😆. Like I said previously, i hope that it will be scaled to a commercial scale where we will see a drastic drop in prices. (Remember yellow tangs were 500 bucks? Once upon a time? Now you can find them on sale for 99 bucks on petco due to commercial scaling of the captivebreeding efforts. I'm looking forward to more advancements from these talented breeders even if i can't afford them. 😀
