His most popular and well-known songs include "Good Hearted Woman," "Luckenbach Texas," and "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to Be Cowboys.

    Amanda:
I've held it all inward, God knows, I've tried
But it's an awful awakening in a country boy's life
To look in the mirror in total surprise
At the hair on my shoulders and the age in my eyes
    Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
    Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
It's a measure of people who don't understand
The pleasures of life in a hillbilly band
I got my first guitar when I was fourteen
Well I finally made forty, still wearing jeans
    Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
    Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
    A Couple More Years:
I've got a couple more years on you, baby, that's all.
I've had more chances to fly and more places to fall.
And it ain't that I'm wiser,
It's only that I've spent more time with my back to the wall.
And I've picked up a couple more years on you, baby.. that's all.
I've walked a couple more roads than you, baby, that's all.
And I'm tired of runnin' while you're only learning to crawl.
    And you're headin somewhere,
But I've been to somewhere, and found it was nowhere at all.
And I've picked up a couple of years on you baby, that's all.
Now sayin' goodbye, girl don't never come easy at all.
But you've got to fly 'cause you're hearin' those young eagles call.
And someday when you're older, you'll smile at a man strong and tall.
And you'll say I've got a couple more years on you, baby, that's all.
I've got a couple more years on you baby, that's all.
You'll say I've had more chances to fly and more places to fall.
    It ain't that I'm wiser,
It's only that I've spent more time with my back to the wall.
And I've picked up a couple more years on you baby, that's all.

Amen to that. Sadly, one of his grandchildren, a teenage boy, was killed by a drunk driver, along with his girlfriend, here in my hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas well over 20 years ago. There was a cross immediately put up in the median where they died, but was no sooner put up and it was taken down and I can only guess it was due to his grandfather and the sightseers that would be congesting that particular road. What a damn shame. Either way, anybody that lived and grew up in Grand Prairie at that time will always remember that tragic event and the loss of life of two teenagers that we're just starting their lives. You could only turn left or right coming off of Robinson road onto Pioneer Pkwy, that apparently the illegal immigrant did not know that you could not go straight because there was no road and he just sped right through the light, hitting their car and killing them instantly. It's still saddens me today😅

I love this song, the way Waylon sings it, and that amazing Sax!! And, the beautiful mandolin, along with the others guitars, keyboards, etc. such a hauntingly beautiful song especially this arrangement of it with my favorite Waylon Jennings! ❤💔🤗😉🕊💜😘 Stunning.. I miss ole Hoss and it’s so sad how he had that horrific diabetes! 😢♥️💔🙏😇

Waylon personified what true and the best blues and country is...that unique, driving voice, great humor, master entertainer and the most handsome & rugged cowboy of them all. I am old, heard Waylon in the 1960's and liked everything he did since. I of course loved the Highwaymen...& never tire of them. I think Waylon's first Outlaw album went Gold in 1st week, then shot up to a triple platinum...he was one huge figure in changing, somewhat, Country music for the best for all fans and for the industry that controlled singers, their music, etc. He died in 2002, his personal friend Johnny Cash in 2003...I tried not to but I wept when Waylon died at only 65(?). He will have left a legacy for sure.Let us be happy we had him, Johnny, Willie, Kris, Elvis (who is in Halls of Fame in Rock, Country, Blues and Gospel.) We have been blessed folks, big time.
