    Dirty Loops on this song took us on a musical journey within a musical journey, within a musical journey. At the end it felt like I had just gotten off the most bad-azz musical amusement park ride ever. WOW!

    The layering is an understatement. The "choir" is actually all Jonah. He sang each part and then layered it all together to create the choir sound. Amazing technical as well as musical talent.

      Funny that you mentioned that, because I just realized that I've never missed the guitar in their music, and I still don't. They are so friggin' talented that they fill their music up so much with their respective instruments that others are obsolete. When, for example, Cory Wong is with them (I love him btw) - it adds to it - but they are sufficent on their own. Good note.

    Brilliant reaction, as usual. You've quickly turned into one of my absolute favourite reactors, and I thoroughly enjoy how you manage to point out little details here an there that I've completely missed, despite listening to the songs so many times. And your joy and enthusiasm is so wonderfully contagious. Thanks!
    One of the reasons the chorus bassline is so percussive is probably because it is written by a drummer. Henrik said this, about writing Next To You, in an interview in Bass Magazine:
    "That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping."
    They produce everything themselves, together with Simon Petrén, who has been working with them since they started out. Jonah studied music production in college, iirc, and he and Simon Petrén are the ones mostly responsible for the great sound. They really do like doing everything themselves, and have full control over the production. I read somewhere that the only one of them that actually records his stuff in a proper professional studio is Aron (and I guess maybe the added session musicians, but I don't actually know anything about that), while both Jonah and Henrik records their parts at home. Simon Petrén lives and works in South Korea these days, and Jonah has said that he and Simon has identical setups of the software they're using, so they can send project files back and forth without problems. And they are self-professed perfectionists, all of them, so no wonder it comes out sounding so fantastic.

    That deep breath you took at the start...you knew you had to brace yourself for what was about to go down. And did it not go all the way down?! This is the song that solidified Henrik as my favorite. And it confirmed for me that, that man could literally play any style of music and make it slap. He's just magic. This is also my favorite vocal performance from Jonah. Every time I listen to it, I shout "YOU BETTA SING, SIR!!!" Love how Aron stood at the end to give those hits that extra stank. This has been my favorite DL song since the day I first heard it. Now you see why we wanted you to see it.

    You know, I realize that there is some production values added by the Immortal Q in the studio, and many layers of vocals added, But... this is 3 guys.... THREE GUYS!!! Three guys that make an insane amount of music come out at an insane rate, and each piece is it's own "masterpiece"! I have yet to see a "first reaction" video, and I mean first time hearing this band, that Doesn't end up with the same thought, Who The Heck Are These Guys? There is a RUclips channel, Stratelle Studios, whose "owner"(?) was, through pure serendipity, contacted by Jonah because of his reaction to this very song. In the of their correspondence, Jonah agreed to do a Zoom interview with Jeff! It was 1 - 1.5 hrs of just 2 guys having a chat about music. Extremely humble, almost embarrassed at times. I got the impression that Jonah has no idea how talented he is. He just knows that this is what he loves to do, and appreciates that someone else enjoys what he does! Their song writing process will blow you away. Give this a listen. It's well worth the time. Thanks for another great reaction. P.S. You've been officially Loopafied!

      Quincy Jones is just their manager though, and they're producing everything themselves, with some help from Simon Petrén. And they sounded like this before QJ's management as well. They've said in interviews that they don't send Quincy Jones anything, not even demos, until they're all done with it, video and all. 🙂

    • @garygraham2513
      @garygraham2513 Год назад +3

      @@lottawiklund8606 I understand everything you said here, and agree completely. They sound this amazing Live! Having said that, to think that one would send a project to Q and not allow him to add.... I just don't see it. Q is genius enough to know when Not to change "perfection", but... a simple addition to enhance!? Why wouldn't you want that? Aaron and Henrik edit every video, and I'm pretty sure that is not changed, but you can see in the credits that there is added percussion, or small amounts of keyboard. Jonah does all the backup harmonies, occasionally with help from Aaron. Henrik likens his voice to goose farts on a muggy day, and therefore. .. not much from him. These guys are amazing, no question. They Could stand alone, without doubt. Having Q as your manager... why not take some help, no matter how small!?

    • @lottawiklund8606
      @lottawiklund8606 Год назад +6

      @@garygraham2513 Because they want to do everything themselves and have full control. And their contract is just for management. I listened to an interview with Henrik and Aron in a Swedish podcast (Skiss), where they said they learned from that first round, with Loopified, that they very much prefer doing most stuff themselves, and just hire someone to help with the stuff they find boring, like management, travel booking and such. I guess that's just the way they work. Even when they released Loopified and had a full contract with Verve. they produced everything themselves, except one song on the Japanese edition on the album, even though they had feedback from David Foster. It's just the way they work, I guess. I only know what I've heard them say in interviews. 🙂
      And as a side note, it's Aron that does all the editing, sometimes with some help from Simon Petrén. Never heard anything about Henrik being involved with that bit, and never seen it listed in any of the credits of their videos. And I think Henrik is being a bit harsh on himself when it comes to singing. He used to sing backup vocals when they played live, in their early days, and did a good enough job of it, if you ask me. 😃

    For me it propels me into a new universe, especially at the end, and with great speed! 🚀
    That funky groove is unbearably good, and yes, Henrik with his bubbly little triplets and offbeat notes does a lot to give it that damn funkiness. But then, Aron…and how he locks in with Henrik’s bass playing (or maybe the other way around, cause it’s mostly Henrik laying down the final track when Aron and Jonah have already recorded theirs.)
    And Jonah’s singing? Out of this world, again.
    Btw, he’s done ALL the vocal layers, choirs and all, despite what it looks like in the vid.
    Others might comment more on how that vocal harmonization process went :)
    One thing you might find interesting to check out, is Henrik’s interview on bass magazine.com/Songified, where he explains a bit about the making of this album. I see if I can add the link underneath, otherwise just google it :)

    They are amazing on record, but I still haven't found a live video in which they are at least half... or a quarter... or a tenth as good as they are on record.

      I must agree. I think this is true of most of their live videos. From an instrumentation aspect, the live versions are really good. But it does always feel like something is missing.

      Could be a sound quality/mixing thing? Their production is out of this world and when you then get the live sound back through an iPhone mic it’s obviously not a great mix of sounds anymore. People who have seen them live seem to think they sound just as good in a live setting as on the record. Just my thoughts on the subject.

      Have you seen this one btw?

      It has some decent sound since it’s on national TV and the biggest mainstream music event we have here in Sweden. They covered and loopified last years winner here and people were so confused cause like I said this is such a super mainstream event. 😂 Dirty loops shared some bad reviews they got from this on their socials having a good laugh about it. Gotta love these guys! 😅

      @@linusottosson5425 yeah “Undo” is an unreal live performance! 🔥
      Absolutely unbelievably good.
      And like you I think their live recordings mostly sound flawed because they’re recorded on iPhones…
      Would love to hear them in a live concert tho!! 🔥🔥🔥
