    Took me (and hardware employees) a while how to set the macabee trap. The key is to pull trigger wire up completely under and center when setting. Have a gopher in lawn at a rental...found the burrow yesterday, set the macabee trap, and just nailed the gopher today!

      my other piece of advice is that you don’t have to waste time with bait. The gopher’s compulsively want to fill in the hole and as soon as they feel a draft, they will navigate towards the trap. But you definitely have to take the extra time to make sure the trap is deep enough and enough soil has been removed that the gopher doesn’t prematurely trigger the trap.

    My neighbor was really good at catching them. He taught me this. You need no bait. What you DO need is TWO traps Chain them together with light chain. Include a split ring halfway between. That’s so you can put in a stake to secure them. Set one trap in one direction and one facing the opposite direction. Those tunnels are two-way. This way you catch the little bugger regardless which direction it comes from. Pocket Gophers aren’t social. Just really busy. It may look like you have fifty of them, but ordinarily you have one or two.

    These things do work and well, however, you do not need to bait them. Gophers want to push dirt up to cover any openings. They're compelled to do this. When they do, they walk right through these traps and are impaled in the thorax as a result. Quick death and satisfying to pull one up with a critter in it. You will need to cover the hole you've set the trap in. It is also advisable to place one at either end of a tunnel or "run". It requires you to dig out both ends of the run. This way you're more likely to get the offending varmint. Happy hunting!

      I just discovered a new trick. It’s an old farmer trek and I thought I would try it out. When you cut your roses back? Or you can use the big cans from raspberries or blackberries. Anything thorny? You shove those 4 to 6 inches deep or whatever you can cram into the gopher holes. if they catch their paws on it, they get messed up and can bleed to death. A Kramden bunch of rose cuttings into gopher holes a couple days ago, and it created a big disturbance in the yard.

      Thank you. I have her two schools of thoughts on this matter. One, that you don’t need made it all because they compulsively want to plug up the hole to protect themselves and their young from predators. Which means they automatically will come into the trap. But I know a professional trapper that swears by vanilla frosting.

    Use peanut butter on the trap trigger. I have caught four gophers in five days using peanut butter where as before the gophers would usually pack dirt around the trap. Good luck folks!

    • @ScottRiddleArtist
      @ScottRiddleArtist  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Ross- It’s interesting I’ve heard juicy fruit gum I’ve heard peanut butter. I don’t use anything in the way of bait. Usually when the hole is open they automatically want to plug the hole up to protect them selves and or the other gophers or gopher babies. When I was originally setting traps I tried beat. But I didn’t get any great results versus using no bait. I’ll give it another try and see if anything changes. Always appreciate another perspective.

    • @ScottRiddleArtist
      @ScottRiddleArtist  2 года назад +1

      I think the beat thing is a fallacy. Some people swear by peanut butter or what have you. But the fact is the golfers has a natural and neurotic propensity to want to close off the opening. Without any bait there are days that I will reset and have to dig out the whole four times! Some people say juicy fruit, peanut butter. I use no date. As for how deep. I think more importantly make sure that you have it tied to a strong piece of wire or rope and stepped in the ground. Because the gophers will take your trap to the nether world. And I would definitely go as deep as possible and clear out as much dirt as possible

      I’ve caught 1 - I keep trying - lol
      I was recently told that by someone who went to a gopher class. But the trick is once you get it inside the hole do you have to leave the whole entirely open because the Gopher will compulsively want to come and close it. The typical part is when they push the soil through they tend to activate the trap before the gophers actually makes contact with it. Or at least that’s my observation.
