Linus i just bought the full size HTC one it will be here in 2 days due to your glowing recommendations as well as my own love of the build quality and ID of the one. So let it be said Linus media group does push the sell of HTC product, and makes amazing content, thanks and keep it up guys.
duly noted but at this point mobile tech isn't something I can ignore. its no secret my passion for phones is not as .... strong as it is for PCs but I don't make the rules. typing this from my evaluation unit of the moto x which will my next phone review.
You don't do many phone videos, but when you do it's pretty good! You don't buy into the specs and benchmark scores like many other reviewers do especially when it comes to android phones. Keep it up Linus!
Linus ! Love the phone reviews, I was expecting for some reason to see you all happy about this phone being that it is smaller but it was great to see your real honest thoughts. Any word on the One Max ?
The video was VERY good. The only thing you might've skipped mentioning is built-in software from HTC; how good or bad it is, how useful, etc. Liked the video and I'm interested in phones, and I did find this informative. MAYBE it relied a bit too much on the review of HTC One, and might've been a little confusing for those who haven't seen it.
Just picked up the One Mini today having used that and the original One, my mini didn't have the build quality issues that Linus pointed out and the sides aren't slippery at all. So may be a different material being used from the review samples. But one thing I do like about it is how much better the headphone Audio quality is over the original HTC One. Just blows it away when compared side by side. Lag is noticeable at points but for the most part not present. Great little phone overall really
I appreciate the fact that you mentioned the fact that S4 mini and S4 are not the same in referral to a previous video interview. Furthermore the HtC one < 5 inch but I understand that a good 4,3 inch phone is indeed missing.
Linus, can you make a video comparing all the major cell carriers and the pros and cons of each one? Maybe include which networks are best for certain kinds of users. That would be excellent!
I'm with Linus on this. Please make higher-end specs phone with 4.3" display! Personally I have quite big hands, but I find that phones with 4.3" to 4.7" display are the perfect size. Perfectly comfortable with using either one or two handed. I'm contemplating between S4 Mini and One Mini but the dual core just puts me off.
While you're right that the one is 4.7" in terms of screen size I find it quite a bit more difficult to handle than the moto x which has the same screen size. Physically the one is the same size as the s4
I expect a model that isn't really much cheaper to deliver similar features and specs. this is a *very* cut down experience versus the full size phone to the point where I find it hard to d compared to just spending a few more bucks on its big brother. maybe that was he plan all along...
ive had the poweramp trial for years up until i bought it about a year ago. i absolutely love it and its much better than any other music player you can get on any mobile. (imo)
I have very large hands, but the Note to me was the HTC one to you. good size for my hand, but I couldn't use the thing with one hand. Honestly, I love my HTC one, and I have no regrets.
Hi Linus, great video as always, any word on when you will be getting the HTC One Max? I saw someone else doing a review the other day but was rather dull so I'm waiting for you to get one :D
I agree on the need for a high-end AND small phone. I so want another Nexus One but with current spec's. The case I have on my OneX gets close to the 'feel' of it, but there is a definite size discrepancy.
I have one and it's perfect for me, a gamer, basshead, editor and in need of a good sized, HD high quality phone and I bought it and got it on release and it only crashed once for 6 seconds. I have dropped it 7 times on solid concrete without a scratch. It is a very high quality phone for an amazing price! Mine is £22 pm.
Agreed. Last year I got the One X, and was really afraid that 4.7" would be out of my reach with my small hands. Within about two months I feel like 5-5.2" would be fine.
pree good review. I have a rooted galaxy s2 probably doesn't feel as good as the htc One Mini but there's so many more people using the sgs2 making support easy to find
That's practically the only time I would need to use one hand and even then it's good that I can't. I think I would appreciate an over-sized device that limits me to use it while parked or at least at a halt in my car.
The lip around the case is specifically so when you place the phone upside down on a table the screen doesn't get scratched. My HTC 8x you can turn upside down to hang up, etc. but doesn't have a lip to protect the screen.
I know the Define R4 is the most used case in build logs. You told me on the WAN show... Herpnderp Don't like flush screen - bezel. Prefer a lip to protect screen from surface imperfections (screw covers and screen paint stuff). 720>1080 IMO on a phone (except I want 1080 screens for Rift). Totally want One specs in mini form factor. Yes Anand fan boy, Nand performance is big deal for multi-tasking :)
no argue about that, i was just replying to the guy who said that he never used his warranty. i never used it too, probably i was lucky, but i want to have it "just in case"
I have this phone and although it isnt much cheaper.. for those who want to save a bit... i would recommend it... it performs very well with daily tasks and i love it
I have HTC One S and imo it is perfect shape and size. Though I tend to use it as a phone/music player mostly and sometimes internet browsing. There needs to be something 125x65x8 with top hardware and a screen that takes +90% of frontal area.
He explained it in one of the latest WAN shows. Basically the reason is that he doesn't take as much care of his stuff as he should. He talked about just throwing his phone in the backpack whith an external charger connected, which obviously puts stress on the connector and the plug. I personaly never had a problem with micro usb and I've had my phone for more than 2.5 years now. But then again, I hate extrenal chargers and prefer to just swap out the battery, which you can't do with an HTC ONE.
I would say go with the Moto X instead. It is actually smaller frame-wise than the HTC One Mini, but crams a 4.7" screen (though it's still only 720p), a 1.7ghz dual core, NFC, Wireless ac, and up to 32gb of storage. Plus the software features are pretty damn awesome. If I wasn't on contract with my HTC One S and wanted a smaller framed phone for single hand use, that's what I would go with.
I absolutely agree that there needs to be a premium high end android smartphone with a smaller screen. Having used a HTC 8X WP8 phone I found it to be just a tad to wide for single handed use. The width of the HTC one mini is just that little bit narrower at 63mm. Perfect IMO. Such a shame HTC skimped on various areas of the mini.
size wise, seems perfect. I've got the Desire 600 Dual sim it almost has the same form factor. I would love to see optimal android phone from HTC for this form factor.
As far as voiding your warranty it's as simple as finding out how to unroot your phone. I've been able to root phones, install custom roms, find the original rom for the phone, install that rom and send my phone in for the warranty. That's not a full unroot because it might leave files behind but most will never notice but for people that insist on having the "complete unroot" with all files and "evidence" wiped it's multiple guides out there and it's very easy.
Personally I have Very big hands. I am only 5'6 but my hands are bigger than all of my friends who are up to 6'3. I use an iPhone 5 day to day, as it is the most comfortable! I have a HTC One and a GS4 and they are just bigger for the spec sheet. The HTC One I think is the limit for sanity, nobody needs more than a 4.7inch display for their phone. I think this is one of the reasons that Apple still have such a hand in the smartphone game, is because they get it! Most people don't need it so big.
making a full spec 4.3" phone will be quite challenging. I only saw 1 coming soon (Z1f) and even that i question its battery life. The problem is full specs are also powerhogs. The only way I see high performance mini phones is if they pull an apple and actually design their own sillicon to focus on ipc but if all you advertise is ghz then that would be pointless.
I think that the mini version of the htc is better that the mini version of Samsung, but of course is a little more than that. Prices, etc. Like you said, it's a personal choice when it comes to phones.
Size-wise, I'd say the HTC One X was PERFECTLY sized.. and was even the "best" phone out, when it was new.. but, it's falling a bit behind to the HTC One, even though it's still a very high end phone. ..and for some weird reason, I like the side micro-usb better on the HTC One X, than the bottom place one, on the HTC One. Something I usually don't prefer. The One Mini looks like a mix between the two, just.. a tad smaller, with overall worse internals.
Understood. But couldn't you make mobile technology unboxings and reviews in another channel of the Linus Media Group? It's just a minor gripe, I know, but I like the idea of having RUclips channels that specialize more in certain areas. Is there any reason you'd have to include mobile unboxings and reviews on this channel, instead of making another RUclips channel for that? (or are there contracts and stuff that keep you from doing that?)
With larger pixels you get pictures with better quality. An extreme example is a DSLR. And larger pixels need less time to catch the same amount of light so you CAN get sharper pictures because there is less time to wiggle. (is wiggle the right word? it sounds strange... i used google translator for this word)
I think if you do a survey most people use one hand on the phone and the other hand to touch the phone screen. Being right handed I used my right hand to hold phone and left hand to touch the screen. I guess I prefer caressing my cell phone rather then poke at it and hurt it's feelings.
Myself i own htc one, for my hand size i would say its almost perfect size, could be 0.1 inches smaller, specs are perfect and in economic battery mode lasts up to 9 days if i only use it for few calls and for music, what more can i wish! I completely agree that having close to 5 inches phone is really clumsy to use especially when you see every day plenty of people mostly girl who got small hands with s4 which they barely holding with tips of the fingers, it becomes almost like comedy
If you're listening back linus.... Sony is making the Xperia Z1f (mini) which has a 4.3 inch 720p display along with Snapdragon 800 and the 20mp CMOS rear camera. And still boasts that beautiful design.
Samsung uses LESS Red and Blue pixels on there Galaxy S3 to save money, you don't hear Linus complain. European Galaxy S3 you can Calibrate the screen, the USA model does not let you do this. Being able to tune the Gamma is something us higher tech guy's like doing. The iPhone 5 screen calibration is pretty good compared to other products.
Hey Linus, I think Sony already listened to you, their Xperia Z1 f(mini) has no compromises in hardware, even the 20.7mp camera is still there. Problem is, Sony don't come to US that much, you might need to wait.
I know Linus reviews more than just Tech, because I've seen many of his videos (even the uber-long WAN Shows). But Linus asked for feedback about mobile devices. I said I don't like it, that was all. I recommended keeping mobile in a separate channel, like the Tech Quickie channel for example.
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini is basically the Z1 so I would count it as a flagship, just a smaller display as far as I know. It's also (I think) the only "mini" that has the same specs as it's bigger brother, unlike One mini to One or S4 mini to S4 and yeah.
He has mentioned it many times. He pretty much hates the physical durability of the connector since nowadays people aren't too gentle with electronics and micro usb is easy to break. Especially if you for example (he used the same example on a livestream) you plug your phone in a power bank and shove it in your pocket.
It's because Micro USB isn't nearly as robust as Mini USB (he hates micro, not mini.) or a full size USB port. He has had several of them break and they are very easy to break, and they unplug very violently if you trip on them or accidentally hit the cable.

Mr, linus
You are getting really good reviewing these phones, keep it up ! :)
Very in depth review I must say! Keep up the good work!
I love your honesty Linus
I like the mobile phone info; the market on them is so huge and quick-moving lately, so I like keeping up with it and hearing multiple perspectives.
Linus ! Love the phone reviews, I was expecting for some reason to see you all happy about this phone being that it is smaller but it was great to see your real honest thoughts. Any word on the One Max ?
I should probably get around to it...
great video! I love your reviews and opinion about mobile systems without hating / loving ios/ android
The video was VERY good. The only thing you might've skipped mentioning is built-in software from HTC; how good or bad it is, how useful, etc.

Furthermore the HtC one < 5 inch but I understand that a good 4,3 inch phone is indeed missing.
I never said I wasn't bothered by Samsung's original PenTile implementation. On the S4 it's far less of a factor though.
Thanks for the honest review. I'm not interested in this phone but I hope you are able to give us a review of the ONE Max.
Linus, can you make a video comparing all the major cell carriers and the pros and cons of each one? Maybe include which networks are best for certain kinds of users. That would be excellent!

Nice! Hope you like the Moto X!! Also, Please sir do some more Phone coverage :) it's fantastic!
And Hey from Seattle :P
Flagship specs in a small phone? Your prayers have been answered by Sony.
Linus, even you are not a mobile guy, I still think this is a good mobile review, you can try keep doing these.
Man I love the vids brotha'! Keep 'em coming....
I love the phone stuff. I am excited to see this guy in black!
ive had the poweramp trial for years up until i bought it about a year ago. i absolutely love it and its much better than any other music player you can get on any mobile. (imo)

I just bought the HTC One today best phone I've used hands down.
Hi Linus, great video as always, any word on when you will be getting the HTC One Max? I saw someone else doing a review the other day but was rather dull so I'm waiting for you to get one :D
Although I don't use a phone, it is interesting to hear about the ones you present.
I agree on the need for a high-end AND small phone. I so want another Nexus One but with current spec's. The case I have on my OneX gets close to the 'feel' of it, but there is a definite size discrepancy.

Pretty thorough review even if phones aren't your specialty. 9/10 from me :)
Agreed. Last year I got the One X, and was really afraid that 4.7" would be out of my reach with my small hands. Within about two months I feel like 5-5.2" would be fine.
Linus:Welcome to an unboxing that I am super-
Me:Stoked? Yeah you say that on every unboxing
pree good review. I have a rooted galaxy s2 probably doesn't feel as good as the htc One Mini but there's so many more people using the sgs2 making support easy to find
johnsmithaha The S2 is over 4 years old now ...
That's practically the only time I would need to use one hand and even then it's good that I can't. I think I would appreciate an over-sized device that limits me to use it while parked or at least at a halt in my car.

I missed unboxings like this
I know the Define R4 is the most used case in build logs. You told me on the WAN show... Herpnderp

In one of his WAN show videos he tells us why. He actually mentions it in a lot of shows.
I love mobile phone stuff! Please revie the lg G2, it seems like the perfect phone
I have HTC One S and imo it is perfect shape and size. Though I tend to use it as a phone/music player mostly and sometimes internet browsing. There needs to be something 125x65x8 with top hardware and a screen that takes +90% of frontal area.

You did very good, nice overview.
Lighting for iPhone works great. Very solid connection. Only problem is iPhones 5 and up and newer iPads are the only thing that uses them.

Do more of this please !!
Linus, make iPhone 5s unboxing & review please. Would like to hear your overall thoughts on it!
Nice video I like the mobile reviews
I think you're confused. You keep calling them all "One", but there are clearly three options in your post...
Totally agree! please make a powerful smaller Android phone...
I'm with you on this one (pun intended). I would prefer the regular HTC One even with the extra cost involved.
i think the phone content si good.. its the only thing we nerds use besides pc and thats y u should keep it in
I Have the HTC One X and I can't wait till i can upgrade to the HTC One. :D
High end small flagship phone is already answered by Sony with their new Z1 compact
*cough* cough* sony sucks though *weeze*
julien foss How so? Sony's Xperia Z series are some of the best phones around ...
julien foss yeah how? i have Xperia phone and it's great.
The only problem with Sony is that there phones look terrible, they should stick to computers, headphones, and speakers.
this is why I always keep to smaller phones.. one hand usage is something more phone developers need to focus on.
As an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, & iPhone 5 owner, the HTC One's are the only android phones I could imagine using..
making a full spec 4.3" phone will be quite challenging. I only saw 1 coming soon (Z1f) and even that i question its battery life. The problem is full specs are also powerhogs. Outside of what Sony is trying, the iPhone SE is the answer to Linus' requests here
Ok...Is that a toilet paper in the background ? Don't know why but I stare at it every time I watch your videos guys xD
I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite store in the Citadel.
Understood. But couldn't you make mobile technology unboxings and reviews in another channel of the Linus Media Group? It's just a minor gripe, I know, but I like the idea of having RUclips channels that specialize more in certain areas.

Hmmm.... you are the first RUclipsr I have ever heard saying to dislike it if you dislike it.

I think he talked about it during a WAN Show stream once saying it has a higher fail rate. But don't quote me on that.
its a flimsy non locking connector. micro USB and HDMI can die in a fire as far as i care.
Myself i own htc one, for my hand size i would say its almost perfect size, could be 0.1 inches smaller, specs are perfect and in economic battery mode lasts up to 9 days if i only use it for few calls and for music, what more can i wish! do some sony phone reviews please. as for this one, very GOOD and detailed.
Thanks! :)
Xperia z1 mini is high end phone in small package! Snapdragon 800, 2gb ram, 720p screen, 20mp camera and very nice build.
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini is basically the Z1 so I would count it as a flagship, just a smaller display as far as I know. It's also (I think) the only "mini" that has the same specs as it's bigger brother, unlike One mini to One or S4 mini to S4 and yeah.
oh the days when 4.3 inches was the high end phone. Long live the HTC Evo 4g!
I believe he mentioned it in the WAN show
Dat Smooth Wooden Furnished shelf....
Go for the One.
He said it before, because he likes the lightning connector on apple devices which you can plug in much easier then mini usb.
The HTC desire 500 specs look pretty good and it has a 4.3 inch LCD. Maybe that phone will come to canada and replace the old desire C that telcos are still selling.
Okay, thanks for the info (:
I only found out about him after TB was a guest on his live stream...I am trying to play catch up.
it's nice phone. thanks for the video
I was thinking of hash brown potatoes as I was watching the video.
Just because you asked.
You know, iPhone 5S is out. That's a great one for... well... everything, And it's one of the fastest phones out there too.
yea it was a segment on one of The WAN show episodes
