Book 1 is a more or less self-contained mini series that actually has a plot similar to The Dark Knight Rises and also came out in the same year. Books 2, 3, and 4 were simultaneously in production and made a 3-part story arc that is basically an ATLA story arc in REVERSE.

Well…. Not all Avatars are serious people. There might be an Avatar in the past who used the Avatar state to win a sandcastle/sculpting contest. And technically speaking, Korra is Aang so…. The playfulness is still there

Maybe Aang couldn’t do it because it hasn’t developed enough to be able to pull it. Take One for All from MHA for example, before the 9th user, the wielder can’t access the Vestige World to talk to the previous wielders. So maybe this is the case Or the Avatar World has included Aang who is playful and that affected the Avatar State

This is why you can hear several other voices when Aang is shouting at the sandbenders while in the Avatar state. So it's likely that Aang was behind her entering the state when doing the air race.
Funny how they forgot to acknowledge that Metal Is lightning/electric conductor which make Metal bending vulnerable to lightning counter attack other than water. Basically you can fried and incapacitated metal bender
The funny thing is that creators also didn't like it. Love triangle 2.0 in Book 2 happened because they didn't actually like makorra ending (that happened only because they didn't know that they would get more seasons at the time).

Korra is hit and miss. Personally I would have liked a series that focused on Aangs kids getting into adventures with occasional cuts to the Gaang.
