@@UnderwaterFishFilms thanks mate 😁 I pretty much just fly fish these days, it’s a weird addiction 😄 I used to lure fish for pike and perch predominantly but now if I can use a fly I will, it’s kind of the end to end process of tying the fly and catching on it but also fighting fish on a fly rod is also a bit different, I love it 😄
@@thereel7071 yep i heard getting a fish on the flyrod is magical! i have to buy one and try it out myself, looknig forward to future vids from you mate, all the best
@@MrJoebailey the flies were fished static on the bottom, not in deep water at all. The mullet pick the flies up off the mud and then the indicator slides away, if there is some flow the flies should roll along the bottom but the fish seem more inclined to pick them up in very shallow water where there is little flow. Leader wise, I have a 12lb tapered leader cut down to an 8ft butt section. Then I attach about 6ft of 10lb fluoro and tie a dropper for a bung indicator where the butt section and tippet meet, then another dropper about 3ft from the point fly. So it should look like 8ft butt section/ indicator/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ dropper/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ point fly totalling around 14ft. I had the bass fishing the same method and set up 👍 tight lines!
@@thereel7071 Thanks Lewis. I need to spend more time in those kind of harbour marks; they look perfect for the fly or light lure tactics. Have you tried Christchurch harbour at all? it's alive with mullet.
@@mathewvickery9925 I’ve not tried. Christchurch yet, I’ve heard the same though and it is on my list of areas to fish, the mullet there are supposed to be more obliging to take a fly as well 👍
@@thereel7071 Yes definitely worth a visit when I'm bass fishing I see loads of them. I'm sure if I tried fishing for them they would probably disappear instantly.
we have mullets and they jump like crazy at time i think they are hard lip muttlets and only eat like grass weeds, they come in during high tide and back out when low tide... trying to see what fly style this picky mullets we have will bite .. some are big maybe up to 4 to 6 pounds they school in groups and some solo
@@thatonebeone worth trying a flexi worm, they might be eating small shrimps and things that live in the weeds, here they almost dig in muddy banks to eat small shrimps
@@seanfitzpatrick3227 thanks mate 👍 Lewis’ fish, the 3 I lost and the bass all took a red flexi worm. There are a whole range of flies that will work though, most of them created by Colin Macleod. I’m in no way affiliated with them, but if you google Selectafly, their website sells a good range of mullet flies. The only thing I would say is that if you are confident tying your own it’s worth it as you can use stronger hooks. I was advised to use PTFE coated carp hooks as they stay sharper and resist saltwater corrosion thanks to the coating. Once I’ve had a bit more success with the mullet I’ll probably do a video on rods, leaders and flies etc. 👍

@@seanfitzpatrick3227 no worries, if you search ‘mullet on the fly’ on RUclips, Fly Fishing Londoner has done a couple of good videos on the static method, one with a guy called Josh who came up with it, well worth a watch 👍
Fantastic bass! Careful playing fish not 'on the reel', sometimes if a big fish turns and dives and you are applying drag to the fish using your fingers, the line can quickly dry because of the friction and 'jam' in your fingers and the fish might break the line. Talking from bitter experience.
@@justinphillips7392 must admit I avoid getting fish on the reel as I often lose fish while trying to reel in the line but appreciate what you’re saying, I often have too much line out for the distance I need to cast so winding that in once I’m casting to the ‘zone’ would probably help. Thanks for the tip 👍
@@thereel7071 yes you are right it's a faff, especially if the fish hits close in. I'm usually worrying about the spare line getting trapped around something if the fish takes line also. If a big bass hits your lure and takes line you have no choice but to use your fingers to control the run.... but if I think I'm going to be playing it for more than a couple of minutes, then I want it on the reel asap
