How To Tie A Gurgler Fly | Fly Fishing For Bass UK | Saltwater Fly Tying
One of my go to flies for Bass on the UK South Coast is a gurgler. A very basic topwater pattern, easy to tie and it works really well when the bass are near the surface. Tie some up and get yourself a topwater smash!
Materials:
Hook - Size 2 Saltwater Streamer Hook
Tail - White Marabou, Crystal Flash and Chartreuse Ducktail
Upavon HD Foam or similar for back (about 3-4mm thick)
Body - 5mm Fritz Chenille in green
Feel free to mix up the colours and materials, I also tie these in black for night fishing but have also caught on a black gurgler during the day.
Tight lines! I'll see you in the next one.

I continue my search for a big bass, mainly on topwater flies in the hope of a huge smash from an equally huge fish. In this video it's a mixed bag of success and stubborn optimism as I contin...

Hey guys, welcome back to the reel, first video of 2024 and it’s a bit of a lament of the Winter for me. I had grand plans of doing lots of pike fishing and well it didn’t quite work out that way. The results will come by themselves and they will quickly return to the water. The wonderful thing about fly fishing is integrating with the environment, feeling the satisfaction of making a good cast and trusting in catching a fish in 20 inches of water. For many people, it is truly crazy. I can understand written English but I only understand spoken English if a Turkish or Russian speaks to me... but from an English men is more difficult. • @thereel7071
      @thereel7071 27 дней назад

      @@dwardz1 I’d say fishing for bass definitely has some similarities. The majority of the time you are stripping in flies in a similar way to fishing lures for trout. The tide introduces flow which you have to contend with but it’s all part of the learning curve. If you have a 7 or 8wt rod then you could use that to give it a try. I keep leaders super simple, 6ft butt section of 35lb fluoro and 2ft of 10 or 15lb tippet, I scale down to 10 if it’s really calm. I’ve done a video on bass flies that covers everything you’ll need to catch fish, which isn’t much, I’ve caught all my fish this year on 2 flies 😄 The thing that’s going to make the biggest difference is finding a good mark and fishing it at the right state of tide which has taken me nearly 3 years to get the hang of consistently. A general rule of thumb is to fish 2 hours either side of high or low tide as the fish should be moving in or out as it floods/ ebbs. Then as I say in the video, keep moving and look for bait fish on the surface, birds diving, structure and flow, these are all clues that bass will be nearby 👍 sometimes you find one of these things, sometimes a combination. Most important thing is to stay safe, you’ll need some wading gear and an awareness of the tide as there are places where you can get cut off if you’re not careful. And a line tray is a must as the tide, rocks and loose fly line don’t mix well 😄 It’s really good fun and addictive! Feel free to give me a shout if you need anymore advice, Tight lines!

    Do I understand correctly that you hooked the mullet on your indicator? Did you have provided this with a hook? Oh Yes, I do also love glass rods

    • @thereel7071
      @thereel7071 2 месяца назад

      Hi, yep my indicator was a piece of packing foam tied on a hook, the mullet probably mistook it for bread which was kind of my thinking when tying them. The indicator was actually sub surface when the mullet took it as well. Cheers, tight lines!

    Great video mate, I’m new to fly fishing altogether and want to try for some bass on the Dorset coast. I’ve got a 6wt rod with matching floating line, do you think that will be sufficient? Any recommendations for leader/tippet strength too? Cheers

    • @thereel7071
      @thereel7071 2 месяца назад

      Thanks mate! A 6wt will be fine but stick to smaller flies to make casting a bit easier, small baitfish patterns up to an inch and a half should cast ok and bass take shrimp style mullet flies as well which might be worth a go. I haven’t fished Dorset but I imagine you will be able to find some spots where the 6wt will work and it will be more fun catching them on lighter tackle. I fish an 8wt most of the time for bass but mostly so I can throw bigger flies. Leader wise to start with I’d use 5 ft or so of 35lb fluorocarbon as a butt section with 2-3ft of 15lb fluoro tippet just to keep it simple and easy to cast 👍 Tight lines!

    I've subbed your channel, lovely looking mark and fish, well done! High tide and low tide offer similar things to a fish, food will often be concentrated at high or low. Personally I like 2 hours down from High as this is when food and bait has to move out from where it is hiding. Also 2 hours up from low as this is good time for fish to use the current to move, but also research tells us crabs and other things also start moving once the tide starts pushing. The middle of the tide is fastest so this is a great time to drift flies over obstacles or depressions. The different size tides are also useful to get aquainted to as sometimes the sizes jump and seem to catch bait fish or food out and often bass will use this as an opportunity as they often do. Appreciate you can't fish the tides you want I'm in the same boat it seems, so quite often I see what the tides doing and that can help determine the type of mark I want to fish.

      Thanks Matt, appreciate it 👍🏻 Yeh at the moment I’ll look at the tide and go where I’ll be able to fish as a lot of my local marks are quite muddy, which means low tide can be tricky as it rules out a lot of places. I went back to the estuary mark in the video last weekend and found an inlet that’s quite gravelly so I can fish it around low now. It’s going to take a while but I’m slowly building a picture of hot spots and bassy looking areas at different states of the tide so hopefully my success rate will slowly improve too 😄 Tight lines!
