Us Irish in the republic of a more progressive mind who have embraced waves of immigration, wether we liked it or not, over the last 25 years are very accepting of foreign culture, religion, language, flags etc. We will accept Unionists also. A United Ireland is imminent wether loyalists like it or not, their position in the north is now untenable. The souths relationship with Britain is at it's strongest ever. Unionsits should be aware of this. We now respect each other and are willing to forgive and forget in order to get on and have peace. There will be a tricolour hanging from all government buildings on this island and will remain to be run from Dublin. It's time for the Unionists to get with the picture they will not be persecuted for religion, belief, culture and will be allowed to have their marches. ALL paramilitary trappings will be removed. It's inevitable so why fight it, it's not like we have sharia law here.

English people don't like the British flag being used to shield violence and discrimination. For a simple reason, it's not medieval nor colonial times anymore. The time is kind of stuck in NI. UK or the rest of the world doesn't care about flag wars and sectarian things. All that is ancient history in most of Europe. Belfast makes world news once a year - in July - because of the march of the orange order and knuckleheads attacking the police. That's it and to be honest, it's not rewarded with much sympathy. The problem is there's way too much violence and hatred and nobody in the NI is willing to do something (substantial) about it. Most people want peace but basically no one is willing to give up any fraction of comfort, dominance or power. The state and police is too soft, and even though NI came a long way, there are still happening (on daily basis) such things, that people wouldn't be able to get away with anywhere else in the 1st world.

Yes the Island is Ireland with 2 countries Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland but people living in Northern Ireland have the right to choose what they want to identify as whether it's Irish or British. If someone chooses to be British you do not have the right to complain and say otherwise! I identify as Northern Irish because I am from Northern Ireland and I have a British passport so therefore I am a British citizen not Irish. The republic of Ireland is an independent country so therefore they are Irish; and like I said I am a British citizen from Northern Ireland as Northern Ireland is apart of the UK, so I am Northern Irish just like someone from England or Scotland is English or Scottish; so get that into your delusional angry mind.

As a member of the Union, I would imagine that what happens in Northern Ireland is of great concern to the English, the Scottish, and the Welsh. Not to mention the fact that £6 Billion a year is poured into the Northern Irish State; a State where 76% of it's GDP is subsidised by State funding.
As far as they are concerned, Northern Ireland must present itself as a functional State and begin contributing at least SOMETHING to the Union, other than just violence. They are simply frustrated.

The only Nation capable of affecting this stability would be Scotland, which happens to be the traditional keystone of the Union. Consistently polls have shown that those living on the mainland are generally in favour of a United Ireland; a fact which explains the frustrated attitude shown by those in the Great Britain toward NI.
These riots and the general disregard for the rule of law do nothing to benefit that figure, nor to enrich Northern Ireland's sense of place or purpose in the Union.

Yeah, easy to say the word tolerance, but a lot more difficult to exercise restraint when there are grave injustices taking place against the loyal British citizens of Northern Ireland. They have had to stomach ex mas murdering terrorists released from prison and walk the corridors of power, governing a country that for 4 decaded attempted to destroy through bullet and bomb, murdering thousands of British citizens. I would like to see how that would go down in England, and see how many English people would show tolerance!

Injustices against the British. Oh fuck up. Look at the injustices done to Catholics that started the troubles. Inequality, bloody Sunday etc. Civil unjustices caused the problems. I dont vote Sinn feinn. Too dodgy for my liking

UlsterDarkKnight if it makes ypu feel any better. Maggie Thatcher n Tony Blair were very close to letting go of NI. Thatcher hated NI. Mafia thugs? Please. The Nationalist Paramilitaries dont have former guys with nicknames lik "Brigadeer of Bling" for starters. Dont start with that mafia nonsense. Its both sided. But not those who just want a job and a family. It is radicals like you who dont let go of the past. Ppl of todqy do not give a flying fuck about Ulster being British or Irish. They dont care about your flag. Look at all the names? Shankill, Rathcoole, Ballymurphy etc etc. All Irish words. Do yer homework kiddo.

Now to make a point here this battle was fought on Irish soil by a Dutch protestant king and a Scottish king James who was also king of England, this battle was not fought for the sake of making a religious divide between protestant and catholic nor was it to divide any part of Ireland from another! it was fought to decide who would take the throne and as such it was King william who won the battle, King Billy as the non catholics call him, after the battle they all went their seperate ways...

Coming from NI I'm quite content to say I'm Irish in the UK, but while I have a great affinity for the British and share much of their culture, I ain't British and could never identity as such. We are kinda in limbo in NI, part of the UK but not British, and not part of the republic and don't have much in common with those from the republic. We are a different Irish to the folk in the south, they have no clue about our culture and the troubles. NI is a manufactured state which means its population are left in limbo....we have been cut adrift.

Why not have a neutral flag that it acceptable to both communities in official places such as Town Hall? Or just fly the Union Jack & the Tricolour together. It's wrong for one side to dominate the political & cultural Zeitgeist at the expense of the other. Either you find a compromise or accept both flags flying over official state buildings.
