I like the Castorea a lot, JB, cause it looks like a barlow. A buttonlock at that! I can live without the filler tab. That color combination is great too.
I definitely agree. A filler tab is needed for the Castorea. The Holston River Surgeon's Knife is really cool looking. Love that long slender blade. Thanks for sharing JB.
After handling my new Castorea, I love it, but I agree that is would be nice to have a filler for the show side (assuming right-hand carry). Good review.
I got the Castorea and the little slip joint a few days ago. Rosecraft just keeps wowing me with their designs and quality. Looking forward to more from them. Awesome knife makers. Thanks JB
Thanks JB for the share of these Rosecrafts. The Holston River is a beautiful piece ... the Castorea is interesting (but appears to be having a mid-life identity crisis) ... but hey, I'll give it an opportunity (since I came out the other side just slightly tattered and wrinkled).
Always glad to see what RCB has been working on. The keychain knife is a real, functional knife! Most keychainers are awfully light duty. The doc knife is really elegant. The mod/trad is cool - that’s a beautiful blade. The handle could use some tweaking, IMO. Move the shield up so lefties don’t cover it up with the clip? Go with the SRM ambi clip that needs no screws? I don’t know. Andy will think of something. I like the flipper and the button lock. Thanks for showing these guys up close!
I hear ya, but it's not a slipjoint and wasn't designed as a slipjoint. It's a modern flipper with a traditional look. The traditional button lock is there to lock up and unlock the blade.
@@RoseCraftBladesI respect your decision to make a knife with more friction in the pivot, especially in a market so against it, but that doesn't mean I like it.
The AwanataI in purple on their website looks great! I’m gonna have to try some Rosecrafts I guess JB I don’t understand how people could be using their slipjoints in such a manner that closing is a serious concern.
I don’t carry left handed, I don’t really care to have a reversible clip, but since this one has it set up the way it is, I think some sort of filler tab would make it look much better.
The Awanata looks to be a near-perfect design for a keychain knife. And the Castorea is a marvelous design. I agree that a filler tab would be helpful on it, probably to match the bolster color.
Received the Holston and the Castorea last week. The Holston is put together well like all their previous slip joints. It’s very square in the handle, the thing I don’t like about it are the corners on the pill crusher end are pin point sharp and the top and bottom edges are sharp. I wish they had finished the end the way the side edges are with a slight round. The Castorea is a great design but it wasn’t constructed that well. The inside edges of the liners are almost sharp and edgey, the shield is low though the center and high on the sides and edge grind is sharp but the angles are all over the place. Like I said great design just not executed well.
I hemmed and hawed on the Castorea, and finally bought one. It’s good. That big fat spear blade is a fine thing. And the knife fills an odd sweet spot between traditionals and moderns. I love traditionals, but my hands aren’t good, and I can see a point when I’ll be limited to yucky old modern knives. But this one gives off trad vibes, despite the flipper and the button. I flip it open with a little wrist, and close it with two hands. I’ve seen folks lube and loosen theirs until it zips open and drops shut, but I prefer it a little slower. Easier to operate than a standard trad, especially with the stiff pulls popular now. But the weight, the swing of the blade, the balance of the thing-very satisfying. Good in hand, though it’s maybe a quarter-inch too long to be perfect. I’d prefer no pocket clip or holes either side, while we’re nit-picking. But, it’s a good one, JB!
Absolutely love the look of the castorea and can’t wait for mine to get here but I think they milling out for pocket clip is pointless unless it’s going to have a deep carry clip. With this style clip it could have just sat on top of g10 because it’s not going to interfere with it’s the in and out of pocket.
I have the orange Castorea on its way. There was just something about it that intrigued me. I ordered last Thursday and it just shipped today but I kinda figured they were all at Blade Show.
Really nice knives Big Red...i had an old timer see me with a doc knife not long ago...he started questioning me about it...i mention the pull was weak...he never missed a best an said "well most of the time his Nurse or someones wife was opening that type of knife" all i could think was WOW...!!! He's is prolly right....🙏😎👍
Personally I think all knives with a recessed area for a reversible pocket clip should have a filler plate. As far as a button lock slip joint, well Andy had me until the flipper tab. I like the overall looks of the Castorea ok, I just wish it was smaller and it didn't have the flipper tab if you are going to call it a slip joint.
The button lock looks like a big knife I like that and that surgeon knife I dont usually like knives like that but I gotta say I'm Intrigued by it great video man 👍
For sure going to pull the trigger on Doc Holsten. Maybe today. Another one or two RCB slips are coming soon so, will have to prioritize as usual. The Castorea is interesting. Maybe will have to place it on a shopping list. Maybe can't chop down a cherry tree, but can certainly carve a few initials in it!
Good discussion. The Castoria is a remarkable sub-$50 knife. The recessed clip is odd, but may have been the solution to a prototype hotspot. There was a deliberate design choice to allow for a clip or lanyard carry option. Cleaning away the manufacturers lubricant and applying your own truly transforms the action. Impressive value for money, hands-down.
@@BigRedEDC Just to got it today and love it so far. The big blade and handle work great and it looks awesome! The pocket clip is a little hard to get on the pants, but working on making it easier.
Definitely adding the Holston but the Castorea is a pass. With all the great offerings out there, a designer has to be on their game all the time. As a lefty, there are certain features that I look at and with this one, when the clip is swapped, it looks like it will cover the shield. I believe we are all put off by that glaring cutout and it needs a filler. Too bad because I like everything else. You teased with the upcoming offerings and I look forward to them. I would like to see if anything competes with my love for the Clinch River.
Don't like that cut out. Kinda ruins the look and feel. For me anyway. As well as the g10 grip. Should have bone, antler, wood. They could eliminate cut out and make the scales reversible. Instead of moving the clip. Just reverse scales.
Really digging that buttonlock one. Saw it the other day and no one had a video on it yet, so thanks.
Thanks so much for watching Mike!

Just wait Ken...more awesome stuff coming!!
Honestly that’s pretty slick! Traditional with a flipper should be up for an award
Thanks brother!
Breakfast with Big Red!! I ordered the Holston River & Castorea yesterday thanks to your awesome discount code!!! 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪Stay Sharp my friend!!!
Thanks brother! Hope you enjoy!
Great looking Rose Craft Blades! I need to get those!!
Terrific Mike!

I love it. Mid-life crisis. So, Granddaddy gets a Vette. ;)
LOL....thanks Byron! Always appreciate your thoughts!
Great to see you at the show! We'll do another 1-on-1 soon.
Terrific seeing you all also! Would love to do another sit down with you!
The river surgeon is great. I just wish the main blades spring wasn't really weak.
right on Patrick!

Castorea is next on my list. 👍
Right on!
Thanks for showing these three, buddy! That surgeon knife is really neat!

"Button lock slip joint" sounds like an excuse for "These knives didn't come out like we wanted them too, but we need to sell them".
I hear ya, but it's not a slipjoint and wasn't designed as a slipjoint. It's a modern flipper with a traditional look. The traditional button lock is there to lock up and unlock the blade.

Used correctly and for the proper job it's not a concern! Gotta be honest I'm guilty of making that mistake!
I think they all look great. I can't wait for the Barlow. and the other slip joints. Andy is an great designer.
For sure Paul!
I agree that a filler tab would help the look on the Castorea.
Thank you very much!
Nice! I really like my Surgeons knife, the button lock looks interesting... thank you JB for sharing them!
Thanks so much David!
I did the roescraft designs just waiting for more color options on the traditional style knives
Right on my friend!
I actually really like the looks of the button lock one.
I do as well Shamus!!
That little red knife you showed 1st should have a removable clip in the lanyard hole. I like these blades!
Yeah....its intended to be a key chain knife.
Super helpful video, brother! Thinking about grabbing one of those Castoreas!
Awesome Bryan! Thanks for watching
Definitely an interesting button lock knife.
Thank you Rusty!

I would like to see them make the slip joint pattern called the one armed man's knife
Right on Garen!

Thanks Radar!
Can't wait to get mine!!!
