    forget the jack plate and make a transom bracket that sets the motors back a foot.. You can build a tub that will hold water for better starts then self drain (hole in the bottom) for the best top speed. You should gain 5-10mph.

    • @charlieodom9107

      @@charlieodom9107 jTrue! But an off-shore bracket works on any hull. Gets the prop into clean water. I never liked jack plates, just adds a bunch of weight with little to no performance gain.

      @AB-80X Год назад +1

      Are you aware that Sunsation has built fast boats for a few decades? I think they know what they are doing. And jackplates are perfectly fine and the way to go.Also if you can't get speed from a jack plate, that's on you. I have seen 10+ mph in some situations.

    • @charlieodom9107
      @charlieodom9107 Год назад

      @@AB-80X so, which is it? Does the damn company know what they are doing or not?
      You can't say that they know what they are doing when it comes to hull design, while saying they do not know that adding a jack plate or standoff bracket will make their boats 10mph faster.
      So, either you are a complete idiot, which I would hypothesize to be accurate, or the designers at a major boat manufacturer, making go-fast boats, deliberately leaves off a device that would make their boats 10mph faster.
      Properly designed hulls do not need or benefit from any kind of standoff bracket, which is why manufacturers don't install them on certain boats.
      Personally, I have been on many boats with and without standoff type brackets, and the only ones that benefit are ones that are not properly designed, or specifically designed for them, in which case they come from the factory with the bracket, I.E. Allison, Bullet, Regulator, Sportsman, etc, to name a few.

    So no break in at all.

    • @travis9217
      @travis9217 Год назад +6

      No real reason for a break-in. Heat cycle it once to seat the rings, and its good to go. The only reason they recommend a break in is to ensure that there isnt a catastrophic failure due to an inferior engine. If you limit the rpms on the first run, the engine can only get so damaged. Both mercury and yamaha do a full throttle test in a tank to every single engine directly off the assembly line anyways.

    Thanks Sunsation for the video, but can you give your though on why Mercury is going to a V-10 instead of just increasing the displacement on the V-8 450R? I am not only curious, I am in the market for a new boat/engine package.
    WHY?
    Mercury V10-400R 5.7L 400hp naturally aspirated 89 octane 695lb 3 year warranty Mercury secret
    Mercury V-8-450R 4.6L 450hp supercharged 89 octane 689lb 3 year warranty Mercury secret
    Yamaha V-8-450XTO 5.6L 450hp naturally aspirated 89 octane 952lb 5 year warranty $50,000.00 (at least they list their price, and I am sure it's is way less than Mercury)
    WHY the V-10-400R -- more moving parts, taller, less horsepower, AND naturally aspirated. Yes possibly a small gain in torque at sea level due to displacement, but again more moving parts, taller, and less horsepower. Look at the numbers for Ford V-10 vs Chevy V-8 heavy duty trucks, they have been doing it for a long, long time. Look at Chevys new 2.7L four cylinder turbo, yes a four cylinder -- 310hp and 430 ft torque, at ANY elevation. Supercharging/turbocharging is where things seem to be headed. SO much torque gains with supercharging. Look at Yamaha/Kawasaki/Sea Doo with their watercraft. Their muscle craft are Supercharged or Turbocharged, 3 cylinders pushing out 300 hp. ANY naturally aspirated watercraft doesn't hold water on these machines.
    WHY not just increase the displacement in the 4.6L 450R if they need even more low end torque and/or reliability? Make the V-8 a 5.7L and keep the supercharging. That thing would be a beast.
    Thankfully Yamaha is trying. Although they beat Mercury in terms of warranty and are willing to list their price, the weight of their new 450XTO is absurd.

    • @ct1762

      im guessing its like the v12 with 2 less cylinders so was reasonably cost effective and might be more reliable without a blower on heavier hulls

      I'm also curious. If I had to guess I would say that some sort of EPA crackdown/ re-interpretation of a "law" has led to this new engine making less power with more. I know thats the case on the automotive side of things.

    As cool as the idea of the V10 is, I completely fail to see the point over the slightly lighter 450R and the much lighter older 400R. Adding almost 100 lbs per engine is just not a good choice in my book.
