- 05/09/2024 Sabula, Ia. This old Milwaukee Road trackage is still earning it's keep! I caught the swing bridge opening and closing along with a tug boat. The weather turned wet and kept the drone time to a minimum. I was able to catch this East bound CPKC manifest as it made a back up move across the bridge and causeway. Savanna, Il. After aborting the mission in Sabula because of the rain I finally caught the Empress! My first time to video under an umbrella but it still worked out ok. Caught a BNSF grain train shortly before the steamer made it's move!
I really enjoy seeing the BN cars! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Boy! It must take a whopping high torque motor to open one of those swing bridges! That's cool 😎, Red!😊😊😊❤❤❤
Real nice cattch, Red! CP's answer to Big Boy. Glad these railroads put value in keeping these steamers running🚂🚃🚃
Thanks Bekleidung! Sounds like the UP may be doing another Big Boy tour. Hopefully it goes by Montour👍
Action packed video Red! Enjoyed every second. Thank you for your dedication of bringing us the awesome steam train footage in the pouring rain. When you can tell a steam engine coming by seeing the smoke plume from miles away! Loved the manifest snaking it's way from the swing bridge & over the causeway filmed with the drone, just amazing. ❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍
Glad you liked it Carol! Definitely a unique place to railfan. I hope to get back there soon with some fare weather. That causeway is a great spot to fly over👍
Hello My Friends
A sunny day is always nice, but steam looks really cool when it's wet and rainy. Great video!
Jack
Thanks Jack!
This was a spectacular video today, Red! You quite a bit of out of the ordinary footage. I just love the swing bridge, causeway, BN cars and the Empress! You've done a stellar job, and I appreciate it so very much. I hope you have a great next week, and please tell Walter and Roger hey for me . 😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Gary! Too bad it had to rain but I made the best of it👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 You sure did. It was fabulous!!
Thanks for ruff'n it Red, lot of coaches on that ole steamer.
You're welcome Tom!
The Empress is a gorgeous train! I think steam engines are mechanical marvels. I don't suppose the passenger cars were all that comfortable, but they sure are cool 😎 looking! Especially the dome cars. Fabulous catch, Red! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
It would be great to go on a short trip. I like the rear facing car with all the glass.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 It sure would!!
Thank you for taking the time to go to Sabula, Iowa and Savanna, Illinois, Red, to capture the CPLC2816 as it passed through Savanna, Illinois! I enjoyed watching the Empress steam locomotive heading west out of Savanna, Illinois. The additional footage that you caught in Sabula, Iowa and Savanna, Illinois was interesting to watch. The opening and closing of the swing bridge in Sabula, Iowa and the CPKC manifest crossing the swing bridge and shoving along the causeway to Savanna, Illinois were remarkably interesting to watch. I have watched a few other videos of the CPKC 2816 in action. The video that covered the longest distance was on the RUclips channel A-Train 4014 Productions. They followed the 2816 over the period May 3-9, 2024, from St. Paul, Minnesota to Davenport, Iowa. That video is a 54:20 video.
You're welcome Thomas! A sunny day would have been nice but I made due. I definitely wanna go back to that area on a nice day and get more drone views of the causeway and bridge.
I think KCS has the best paint scheme of any railroad, with the exception of Chessie System! The cat is hard to beat. 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Good work. The weather was great for my living room viewing.
Thanks Elizaveta!
Nice catch Red , like the drone views . Always like to see a steam locomotive in action and again miss seeing cabooses on end of trains.
Thanks David P! Interesting spot there👍
Thanks for standing out in the rain red great vidieo❤❤😊😊
You're welcome William!
That's gotta be the most unique shove move going across a river! Glad you were able to catch 2816. Looks good even in the rain
That was a strange shove move. My first video with an umbrella😃
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 We've all been there lol. Although the sound of rain hitting the umbrella with a train going by is kinda neat
Milwaukee road balast cars in Illinois and a caboose! Nice! Seen 2816 go through oak creek, WI.
Saw the UP Big Boy 2-3 Summers going through St. Louis, MO. One of Big Boy’s remaining 4-5 brothers resides at Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO. 👍🙏
Hello Red, beautifully filmed as the bridge turns again. An interesting scene as the train backs over the bridge and then over this embankment that goes through the river
Filmed spectacularly. Too bad it was raining when the CP Royal Hudson passed by. Very nice video, thank you for your work, even in bad weather. I wish you a nice Sunday and remain with kind regards, Wolfgang
Hey Wolfgang, you're welcome! The umbrella sure did come in handy. I will try and make another trip there and get more drone footage👍
Great video, Red! Happy to have found this today after stumbling upon some of your videos from Dubuque. I’m an Iowa native as well, but moved to Wyoming in 1974. Thanks for posting your wonderful videos. I subscribed so I won’t miss any of your new content. Love your drone work!
Thanks David H! Would have loved to flown over the 2816 but the rain wrecked that. Dubuque has some unique spots for railfanning👍
great footage Red thank you * Happy Rails *
You're welcome Harley!
That is awesome to see a steam train and it is raining as well and she is very beautiful to see her but here in Basingstoke England are steam train are out and about and the train watcher looking at the train thanks
You're welcome Elaine! You guys probably run steam more over there👍
We were on the other side of the Mississippi River getting dumped by rain while we waited for 2816. I wish I had an umbrella...lol. Nice video Red!
Thanks IWP! I was there by the swing bridge and decided to move. If only it would have shown up 3 hours earlier. Luckily had an umbrella in the car😃
Nice job catching the Canadian Pacific steam locomotive #2816 keep it up railfanning be safe out there please red
Thanks Sebastian!
Saw the Empress in Franklin Park, IL, on Wednesday and Thursday saw it in Elgin, IL headed west to Davenport. It was great! Got video.
My dad worked for The Milwaukee for 38 years, and my 2 cousins were conductors on freight for The Milwaukee between Bensenville, IL yard and Savanna.
Sounds like you had some great chase time! You have some great history there👍
Best video yet. THANK YOU
You're welcome coffee!
Been awhile since I've been thru sabula or savanna thanks so much
@@coffee-co8gk I definitely wanna get back there soon with nice weather👍
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I know the bnsf has a lot of trains cpkc less but still consistent and that bridge across the Mississippi is worth it
@coffee-co8gk Yes! Next time I'll fly along that causeway more too.
Oh yeah red nice Milwaukee roads and a swing bridge Kansas city southern mixed freight there and Nice BNSF grain train oh yeah nice steam locomotive red I love it that’s awesome 😃😃😃👍
Thanks Diego! The weather was tough but got it done👍
Another great video Red. Too bad about the rain. Because you didn't get to say It's Drone Time" Lol. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Rob! Yeah weather was a bummer. There's always next time👍
Glad To You Was Able To Catch 2618
It was a long day but worth it👍
Red you caught some great stuff there buddy. Yeah now I know why you like that spot!
Thanks Brandon! Another interesting spot in Iowa!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 you’re welcome sir!
Another awesome video Red, but the only thing bad about it we didn’t get to hear the steam engine blow its whistle lol but anyway, my friend you try to stay dry out there today or whenever you shot this and we’ll catch you on the next one
Thanks Timmy! I luckily had an umbrella along that day. Yes the steam whistle would have been great 👍
Nice catch! I live in Calgary near where they did the final run downs and testing for the 2816, getting to hear the whistle tests echo through my neighbourhood was so satisfying to hear!
Thanks Ian! That would be cool to hear the horn test. Sounds like the 2816 will go through Iowa again on it's return trip👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 Unfortunately i dont have a recording of them as they were sporadic and always caught me by pleasant surprise!
You’re a real trooper Red. Bad weather and all we appreciate your dedication!☝️🚂🚞
You're welcome Dennis!
Nice catch Red.
Great video. Weather sucked. It rained on us when bigboy came into mason city. But ended just as it got there
Thanks David S! Weather was definitely a bummer. I had all kinds of great drone plans that didn't work out. Still got a good shot under the umbrella👍
A friend of mine works for CSX in the Albany, NY area. There is a similar swing bridge in Albany over the Hudson River.
It's owned by CSX, but the primary user is Amtrak.
They must test the bridge periodically a few times a year.
If the power to the bridge is out the back up to operate the bridge is a manual hand crank.
In manual hand crank mode it takes 30 to 45 minutes to open or close the swing bridge.
Quite a few swing bridges still along the Mississippi. Boy that would be a work out with a hand crank!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 it is a workout. That is why they typically need a team of six men to manually crank the swing bridge open or closed.
🚂😎👍🚂
Thanks for taking time to catch the Empress on her North American Tour. I got to see her on display at the St Paul Union Depot during her stop in the Twin Cities. She’s an impressive machine. The F units that travel with her are impressive in their own right. Despite the rainy weather you managed to make a number or interesting catches in addition to the steam locomotive; a swing bridge action, an extreme reverse move, the curving causeway from the air, and a BNSF grain train with mostly BN hoppers.
It appeared the reverse move was to pickup a cut of cars in the Savanah yard. Did you stick around long enough to see which way the train headed once it returned to the Iowa side or the river? The area is worth another visit. Hope to see another video or more in the future.
You're welcome Sandy! Having an umbrella along was definitely handy that day. Sounds like the Empress will stay on the Iowa side for it's return trip. Those F units looked great. That reverse move seemed very odd and made for a good shot on the causeway. I left before they made it to the Iowa side. Yes I plan on going back there on a fare weather day👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 my guess on the reverse move is that a cut of cars from Chicago had been dropped in Savannah by a KC bound train and the reverse move latched on to them to take north to Dubuque and Marquette and points west across Northern Iowa.
Red I used to work on that bridge a long time ago
Hope the video brought back some nice memories Paul!
Nice video! There is a typo, it’s CP
2816 not 2618
I'm guessing there are a lot of grease zerks on a steam locomotive. Most of them were likely made before the era of sealed bearings. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
# 2816 is what you meant to say in your Video Title. 👍🙏
You're right! I need to fix that👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645Hello Red! I wasn’t being Critical but wanted to make sure you did Not Miss out on any Search traffic looking for Wrong Number. Thanks! 👍🙏
The bridge seem to be much faster than Dubuque was.
I see you caught the signal drop/change.
I guessing the F units are there for power and brakes. It also reduces wear and tear on the steamer. Not to mention they cant just cant pull to a water tower every ten to twenty miles or the repair facilities to handle it.
The F units are antiques themselves. I wonder how many are setting around for parts or scrapped?
I noticed the bridge went fast then slow towards the end. That train must have quite the crew of mechanics. That's a long ways to go without a break down!
It seems very strange to me that they back up such a long train. How would they know what is behind the last car? 😊😊😊
Probably had the conductor back there.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 OK. That makes sense. 👌
She'll be in my backyard of Laredo Texas
That should be fun👍
Why do they blow out all that steam before they leave, Red? 😊😊
Good Afternoon Red,
That swing bridge is cool, a lot better then watching paint dry indeed. I like to wait grass grow personally but that swing bridge is pretty cool! I always love being by water. I have the Grand River just down from me, I usually use my wheelchair attachment that makes it a trike to go along the trails. Was there someone on that on the gondola? Was that CPKC going backwards over that causeway? That entire part of the video is awesome! Try and take more videos of that causeway. Ahhhhh two old search lights. Love those. I never really cared for steam engines but that one you caught there was pretty cool I tell ya. Great video as always Sir. Cheers from Southern Ontario 🇨🇦
What were the 2nd and 3rd cars? They had what looked like a headlight on them. It also looked like there was someone in the first FP locomotive.
2nd and 3rd Cars are “Auxiliary Water Cars” used as a “Tender” for the Locomotives. 👍
Yo Phantom! I would have flown over that causeway more but the weather threw a wrench in that. Railfans from all over around there. Yes that F locomotive looked to have someone in it. They use those FP locomotives to power all those fancy cars. I'll get back to that causeway on a nice day👍
Red, does that causeway flood in high water situations? 😊😊
I believe it did back in 1993.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 Thanks, Red.
Where you shot the BNSF you’re standing where the turntable used to be for the Milwaukee house of the year, right?
Would have been nice to see an aerial view of that area from the old days👍
The roundhouse used to be right behind where he was "filming" from. 42.08894 -90.15123 on google maps
MILW 261 is more impressive 😊
She's bigger, but still not the Big Boy😃
