FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Thank you for the prize and contest, we are so excited to start the build! from, Dave, Nick, and Ben
I'm so happy for you guys! Can't wait to see you get started, and I'll fly this 14 down to visit your project!
Congrats and we al look forward to your family build!
Congrats! Looking forward to seeing the build! :) No pressure! LOL
I almost skipped this one because i thought it was going to be too technical for me to follow, but watched it all. Great job. And yeah Ev!! Helping dad with the build.
Love the Father/Daughter thing. She will be a awesome teenager and later an awesome all around woman.
I like the Voiceover.... most times ambient shop noise makes it hard to follow along.... the voice over means much more edit time and this guy approves of your efforts.
It’s good that you let your daughter help. You never know which activity or experience will light the spark.
We invited one of my buddies to help with my uncle’s build when I was growing up and he went on to major in aeronautical engineering and then got job at Lockheed. He still talks about that experience we had “helping.” Even though we were probably more getting in the way. 😂
Great to have your young family help and be involved. I am supprised you fitted the lights before finish painting the tips. Yes would like to get into the weeds as you say with the build.
I think most of us that follow the build vlogs are interested in the nerdy details :)
Also, it's great to see your daughter involved in this :) Kids growing and finding fun in things their parents love is an awesome thing to see :)
I loved every minute, especially watching the pride and joy on Evelyn's face. Nice to see the plane coming along so well given, etc...
Appreciate the feedback Scott - And yeah - it was fun to se Evelyn get into it
Steve, if you're planning to paint the aircraft that canopy gap might bind after paint if it really is that marginal. Don't foget to account for paint thickness. Loved the episode! =)
Or just leave it 'naked' for contrast...a thought
Don't throw the content away even if it feels long during your edit Steve! We love the updates and more of the details when getting through these COVID times.
So cool seeing builders including their kids and family in a build. Hope she follows in your footsteps and become part of the next generation of pilots and builders.
Love the weeds, I hope to build an RV-10 in the future so I'm soaking up all of this
Love the nerdy detail into the weeds
Definitely keep the gritty details going! Also, the longer the better! Love your stuff Steve, thanks for being such an awesome inspiration - keep 'em sharp!
Really cool to see you getting more hands on with the build. Can't wait to see her fly!
You can't go wrong with lots of details on a build project. I think sometimes content creators forget that the viewer has pause/FF/RW options. The viewer can always blast past stuff they find boring (especially if you include a handy time code/subject index) but the enthusiast can't enjoy what you don't include.
You never have to worry about putting too much in your vids. I'm one of those that thinks more is better when it comes to anything aircraft.
I heard an interview of you on an aviation podcast. I never commented on your videos since you have so many followers. This time I really want to say cheers to you brother. You definitely have an awesome life. Don't bother with the negative comments. Fly on !
Love seeing the kids involved! The build is looking great! You guys are really.... flying 😜
Definitely more episodes with nerdy details for us socially inept Covid refugees who don't get out much...
Ran long!! I was bummed that it ended so soon. Great to see you guys back at it!
Awesome - loving all the feedback from you guys that watched to the end!
@@FlightChops It could have been 2 hours it was riveting in more ways than one (forgive the pun)
Just keep them coming. It's great to see an aircraft being created, and to watch such a dedicated team at work.
Great to watch....an aircraft kit always makes we want to try it, but makes me realise it’s harder than it looks.
When this airplane flies, I will cry. This has been so special following along!
Totally! I love seeing dreams come true
Man, I was just filing a tight edge myself today; finally refining the fit of the forward baggage door. Still stuck in canopy skirt hell, and dealing with a lot of personal distractions that have slowed down progress a lot this summer... but getting back into it. You already know how much I'm frustrated by the border closure; also sets back the possibility of you visiting my build. You're lucky to have experienced mentors on call. I have some around here; they lead busy lives, but I've gotten help when I've really needed it. It gets tricky when the parts I have to handle require at least two people, and I only have me. The price of progress is bigger parts. BTW Great Work Evelyn! My daughter Naomi helped me rivet on the aft top skin, and she did a great job. My wife Amy even helped me tighten those nightmare gear bolts. Having family help out is a good feeling.
Yeah man - it’s frustrating all around. I’m trying to stay positive and look forward to when we can travel more freely / safely again. Keep grinding buddy!
yep ... the more the weeds, the more the better
Awesome - Thanks Gwen - I am glad to hear so many of you are enjoying them all the way to the end.
Yep weed away
Absolutely, all the weeds you can muster! Diggin all the 'little bits'!
@@FlightChops I agree, showing the little quirks along the way makes it interesting. It's good to know how to get out of the weeds. If it ever feels frustrating. Take a 5 minute breather outside and keep going. I'd love to stop by and see the progress as well, but.. pandemic.
This is perfect time to get into the weeds. After it's painted and flying? Meh...not so much. :-D
Thanks for the update!
Good on you for having Evelyn help. Kudos to her.
“Nerdy” details are the best. Any one who follows your build will benefit from your mistakes.
Hello from Norway ! This is my favoritt channel. Will be fun to see the plane finish 👍
Thanks! And I am so sad I didn't get there this year as I had planned to :( next year I hope to get there!
I find these videos interesting because I used to build 747's and some techniques are the same and lots are different. A lot of the plastic work seems more along the line of boat building instead of building an airplane.
Thank you for using proper precautions. I've just seen so many other people including RUclipsrs who aren't being as safe as they could be. It's really refreshing to see stuff done correctly! keep up the great work! :D
I wonder how many hours of amateur aircraft building has been completed since the pandemic started. Love your work sir looking forward to the final product
Thanks! Yeah - for most builders this has been a gift of time to focus! It was a bit of a challenge for us due to the nature of the facility we are working at... but we're back!
I like the longer un-cut videos. Agreed they may not be as polished, but they are more real. Thank you
Glad to see you guys back to building! Keep em coming. These in the weeds build videos are like therapy.
I'm loving these more in-depth episodes. BTW - top tip, when cutting plexi, if you stick regular clear 3M tape over the cut and cut through it; it acts as a lubricant and *greatly* reduces melting at the cut line. (Learned from a previous job making illuminated signs).
Definetly a yes for the weeds from me! Love seeing your family getting involved too
So glad to see such consistency in the respect for everyone's health, especially with all those gents with all that experience around! 👏👏👏 😀
And more importantly, if he continues to drink the kool-aide he's insured a long and prosperous YT channel....
@@gerardduquette782 over 1 million people have died due to your "Kool-aid" so shut up, you morally bankrupt bot.
Loving this series! Love being in the weeds!
Keep up the good work man. Hope to see your plane and meet you one day.
Keep up all the details (In the weeds) Chops.. Really enjoying the videos :)
The kid's a natural!
0:34 I really thought that was ice cream
Yeah I was speculating until I saw the steam coming off
Hot fudge Sunday - only slightly toxic
FlightChops forbidden ice cream
That was cool to see your kiddo working on it. I have two nieces that will be pilots thanks to me. The 25 year old is goubg to an open house at Spartan to start her aviation career and the 13 year old is in the flight academy in high school. She was building an airfoil last night. I almost cried. Iol
Hay Steve, the Lancaster just flew over as I was watching your show.! My first thought was that it was part of your show.! Perfect timing with Thanks and thumbs up from Niagara.!
I follow them on Twitter, so I knew they'd be flying today - but I wasn't sure which way they'd go - I guess we'll have to wait for next time to see them over Toronto :)
Great to see the RV progressing well. It is also great to see Evelyn taking an interest and getting involved (I remember you saying that you'd never push her down the aviation path, so I know its her taking an interest).
Private aviation is slowly getting back to normal here in the UK, social distancing in place and cafe's at airfields using similar arrangements to keep people safe. I need to find a new syndicate though as the chief pilot sold our T67M. Maybe I should get that tailwheel sign off done...
Yeah, like the detail vids like this. It's cool to see the struggles too, we'll know the effort it took to get it looking sharp.
Looks like you're working on the tail lights of a '56 Chevy .
FlightChoips, best of luck in the process and afterwards! I enjoy watching your build vlogs because they take me back to my misspent youth helping build major subassemblies of prototypes that only flew months after our sections had left our factory. I envy you getting to see the whole process from boxes of parts to flying, and then flying it yourself! If you ever drop by KHZR, give me a shout so I can admire the work of you and your family and friends :)
Appreciate the invite!
@@FlightChops Just give me a week's warning so we can have a proper Cajun/Filipino feast ready for you. Menu will vary with the season. I hope you're up to eating anything, especially pepper, because most things hereabouts ain't worth eating without it.
Great video, loved the detailed approach. I wish I had videos like this when I built my RV7A some years back.
keep them long - great format... cannot wait to see it airborne...
Well done flight chops. Your vlogs are informative, entertaining and well produced no matter how much footage and detail you leave in. Thanks
Great to catch up some! Living without wifi is a bit interesting...Hope to catch up soon, and look forward to the border opening soon!
Yeah - I don't know when it will open up again, but I look forward to visiting my friends in the south when able
Definitely enjoy getting more detail!!
The "weeds" content is great, especially for those of us working on our own Vans. Please release other "weeds" episodes.
Thanks for the feedback - I'll keep em weedy :)
For sure keep the deep nerdy dives going, I would spend hours watching these when i cant go play in the sky myself!
I'm loving the build. Rv's look like great aluminium planes. At least for fiberglass planes, like the cozy mk4 I'm starting tomorrow hopefully, West systems 105 with the 209 hardener is recommended for exactly that reason. It's slower so the thermal run-away is rarer.
Hey Chops! 👋 I love those lights
Yeah - Landing a tail dragger at night is no joke - but those lights should really help - looking forward to testing!
FlightChops We’re all looking forward to it! As much as I love the Vans, my heart definitely still lies with a Carbon Cub. That’s a while away though...
Ennoyed it. Would happily watch longer into the weeds
West Systems glue are gret. When I asked around what to use on some woodwork on my Auster here in New Zealand my aircraft engineering buddies said West Systems as Avspecs used it for the Mosquitos they rebuilt!
Thanks Steve, detail in-the-weeds stuff is good, I'll be starting my 14 next year, I'm sure I'll be saying Oh yeah I saw this on Flightchops...
Awesome - keep in touch through your build.
You learned the hard way that mixing too much at a time will bite you. If you would have had it in a much larger but shallower container it helps plus putting it in a pan of ice water. I have used a lot of West system Epoxy helping my daughter building cedar wood strip canoes. We use the west system in building up the stem pieces and of course lots doing the epoxy-fiberglass layers inside and out. They have a special extra clear component for that. We have used about 10 gallons worth now with 5 canoes built. They have about 10 different filler materials depending on what you are doing.
Awesome job Steve ! 👍
Loved the detail. Keep it coming.
Great to see you SAFELY getting back to the build! Thank you for this. Revision #3 of the instrument panel is very impressive. Clean and balanced. Where will the circuit breakers be located, or are do the switches double as them? Also, since you're relocating the canopy jettison handle, Please show us the alternative method of accomplishing the release. Will it be via mechanical linkages, or flexible cable?
For sure yes, we will address how the relocation is executed
Great series with an amazing crew!!
Yes - awesome - I feel very lucky to be working with these guys!
Glad to see you again, ....looks like a great place to spend time building aircraft.. your lighting will look really nice with these lights lit up .
..... calibrated squirts ? I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the fine video.
Glad you enjoyed it Robert!
I really don't mind the long episodes, I love the prospect of someday building my own plane, and this only invigorates it!
I am LOVING all of these, Steve. Keep it up!
good work man it is always fun building stuff. you will have so much fun flying when your RV-14 is finished. good job :)
Another great video - I like the format. The build series is awesome.
I love working on plane, have to build my own one day :D
I'm not a pilot but love aviation and damn love your channel. Keep it up my brother from the great white north 👌
Nice progress, Steve! 👍🏻
Beautiful work guys.
Masks on and protocols. Smart people who cherish and protect their loved ones. Bravo.
Looking sharp!!
It's always great to see the progress. Thanks. Cheers
Thanks!
Great detail Steve - thanks for the longer format.
Ran long, impossible!!! Fun to watch the whole thing
Awesome! Thanks for watching to the end!
Good to have you guys back on!
it was all interesting!
Great video, love seeing the process! Keep the long videos coming!
Nice success!
Loved the longer vid!
Wish I could help. This is cool.
Loved the detail - really interesting! 👍👍👍
These are good. Love the details
Love this type of content from you guys!!! Awesome!
You should be able to do West System ratios by weight. For small projects will save product.
Cool episode! Love the build vlogs , Steve!
These long build vids are great, cant wait for the next one!
Awesome thanks!
This was your best one yet. The more details the better.
Super interesting episode. Thanks for sharing that much detail
Brilliant as normal keep them coming 👍 👏👏🍻
Hey I love these nerdy details It is how we learn thanks
Looks amazing! Keep up the good work. You are so far ahead of me now! I can't keep up with your team of experts!
Where are you based? Maybe I can get there to visit when the world stops ending!
FlightChops my wife, @planelady, and I are down in Houston building a slow build RV-10. Starting fuselage kit this week.
Great Length 👍
(TWSS)
loved it good too see you back
Glad to be back!
Great video. Love the detail. Keep em coming!
Nice video! lol too much catalyst!!!! Only one way to learn!!
Love the details
Yes another build video! Thanks Steve. Keep em coming!
Thanks, will do!
Do you think you will come do another survival shakedown? Got one coming up in the BCGA again
I will definitely be down there to work with those guys again when things settle down.
