Guy unpacking the prop cracked me up: "Oh it's got 3 blades!" acting like he's all surprised :)
Haha - I think it was actually that Perry was surprised by how short the blades are... Dave then reviewed that it has 3 blades, and thus they can be shorter.
Lycoming should make a RED colored and obviously engine motion stopping bracket that fits on the flywheel to prevent motion until the engine is ready to move. Something like a rod or a gear engagement bracket. That way the technicians can work on the engine and no fear moving it too much.

Absolutely. Then someone would forget to remove it and fry their starter... 😁
Some Diesel engines use a pin that goes into the flywheel to stop the engine from moving so you can set the valves .
@@LTVoyager one could also disconnect the battery/starter until the lock is removed...
Yeah building it with a dummy plug or something to stop the battery being connected could be an interesting idiot-proof idea, however I'd imagine a big red warning on the front of the manual or on a sticker on the ends of the battery cables would probably suffice for anyone that's actually capable of assembling a plane in this manner

Experimental vs. Certified 30 years ago:
Certified: Engineered with the latest in technology and aeronautical engineering methodology to maximize reliability and safety.
Experimental: A sketchy design from some random guy with dubious qualifications. If the wings don't straight up fall off, the plane will have "exciting" handling characteristics.
Experimental vs. Certified now:
Certified: Either prohibitively expensive or a 40+ year old beater that will require constant expensive maintenance to keep it in the air.
Experimental: Just as well engineered as Certified but without the expensive paperwork. You can perform whatever maintenance you feel comfortable doing in order to cut down on operating costs.
Hands down the coolest propeller I’ve ever seen.

I found it interesting that they recommended dynamic balancing. I've always heard that makes an improvement in smoothness. But we had a well-known local prop shop give a presentation for EAA Chapter 194 at PTK and he said they don't do dynamic balancing. Can't remember all the details (I should check my notes) but I was given the impression that it can become somewhat of a chasing-your-own-tail scenario. Tip I received on final prop installation: feed your safety wire BEFORE you torque the bolts. It may be to difficult to do afterward depending on the clocking of the roll pins and clearances. Thanks for the Harvard low pass and take off... just what my spirit needed. P.S. Got my engine back to Barrett last Thursday; ball's in their court...

Hey Steve! Watching your RV come together over the past year was exciting to say the least and It broke up the boredom of quarantine. Been flying the sim in the extra 300 trying some of the aerobatics out and just flew a leg without GPS like your most recent video in the Cherokee 6. We take technology for granted and It's good to brush up on the basics! Hope you make it to EAA this year with the RV! Fly safe and keep the videos coming my friend!

Are maintenance and overhaul limits different on a composite vs. aluminum prop? Or are they the same overhaul requirements?

Tip up (not sliding) canopy RVs have had this option for a while as far as I know - it simply pulls the pin from the hinge so that the airflow can get under the front of the canopy and take it off.

@@FlightChops Starting to process the myriad pics (I am a still photographer). Came back with over 7,000 shots. After culling I have many workable ones. The Blue Angels debuted their new Super Hornets (first time ever in an airshow).

Are you running two MAGs or one MAG and one SureFly electronic ignition (or other)?

Hi Steve, firstly - AWESOME AIRCRAFT!! I noticed a few comments on the diameter of the Raptor Explorer. I’m now up to the decision time on the prop. I’d love to get the same prop as yours, but as a few previous guys have pointed out, Van’s do not offer an option for the 3-bladed Raptor Explorer for the tail dragger.
Could you please comment on the exact diameter of yours so that I can go to Hartzell and say “I’d like one those please”?

Interesting, yeah - I think it might be a prop clearance technicality with the 74" on the tail dragger configuration. I'll get a better look at that next time I am at the hangar
What were the reasons to go with 3 blades instead of 2? Most of the RVs out there have 2 blades.
@FlightChops Just following up on this prop as I am in the middl of the same search. Just spoke with Vans 5 mins ago regarding the confusion on the 72 vs 74. Of course they 74 is not recommended for the TD's due to clearance, however they assure me many people still run them. The 2 bladed 72's are still available though Hartzell, but have not been vibrationally tested by Vans, therefore they won't sell them for the TD's, yet. And with the 15 in process they have no near future plans to do such testing on the 2 bladed 72's. So I am assuming you went with the 74" on your 14? Or is it the 69" they have listed on Hartzells website but not Vans. So much confusion and missing information on these comp props for RV's!!
I've got the 74" as far as I know... I can look back at the paperwork if you send me a reminder email. I can report back that after ~150 operational hours (and well over 100 landings), it has been great.
@@FlightChops Appreciate the feedback! Thats great to hear!! Im trying to decide on a Composite C/S prop to go with for my 7, but Hartzell/Vans dont suggest the 74 due to the 2" clearance difference. But obviously its not a big deal, just have to be more aware/careful with nose attitude.
@@Jibbs_actual The RV-14 is definitely a bigger aircraft and I'm pretty sure it sits taller than a 7.
You might find the 72" works well for an RV-7...
@@FlightChops Absolutely. The 72" is definitely the recommended size, however they (Vans) told me directly today that they have sold plenty of 74's to 7 owners. Interesting!! Anyway, appreciate your time! Love the channel!

ESP disable switch? Hadn’t thought about that. How is that wired? Is it available as a soft switch through the G3X?
Cool yeah - it is a soft switch via the menus.
I just wanted something quick and accessible, and also any excuse for a covered rocker switch, right? :)

With Oshkosh happening between July 26 - Aug 1, I assume Aero Friedrichshafen 2021 is out of question for you. (It's between Jul 14 - 17)
Latest news is that Aero '21 was just cancelled, and rescheduled to April '22

Aero Friedrichshafen is in Germany, *of course* it doesn't happen. I also wouldn't get my hopes up for April next year, pretty sure they'll reschedule it again to late summer, if at all

@@mikercflyer7383 Fresh air doesn't really matter here, public events in general aren't well-received with the officials and have been forbidden altogether for almost a year now. This is totally independent of the number of cases, so no prediction can be made as to when public events will be allowed again.
E.g. general lockdown my be eased slightly if 100,000 people produce fewer than 50 positive tests in one week, but there is no such lower limit for public events.
(everything up to here was facts; from here on is just discussion about how bad things really are from what I can tell)
The fact that 100 positive tests in one week per 100,000 residents is enough for "hard lockdown" makes everything seem much worse than it is imo. Even if those 100 tests were from individual people, that's still only 0.1% of the respective regions population (the way they calculate these limits means if your region has 10,000 residents, 10 positive tests per week is enough for emergency-stop lockdown!).
And if we consider that many people are legally obliged to get tested every or every other day, you alone might produce multiple positive tests per week (e.g. to see if you are "still positive"). Now let's also take into account that the PCR test has a false positive rate estimated between 0.8% and 4.3% [according to UK gov't Oct 21, 2020], this means if you test 100,000 people per week in a certain region, you will *definitely* get more than 0.1% positives - which means: hard lockdown!
So to conclude: Germany is stuck with its lockdown and probably will be for a long time to come, unless the government re-thinks the way they judge the need for lockdown, but so far they've strictly gone by "more lockdown is more better, no matter how much virus".

I design crates, boxes and other trash for a living and I am puzzled by that packaging. Seems overly complex, but I am sure they had a reason.
Dunno... did you watch the "unboxing" portion? it came apart pretty simply and seemed to make sense as far as how it was protecting the prop.
@@FlightChops its was simple for you the customer, but looks complex for the factory team to assemble. Also lots of sperate cardboard pieces to track in a factory. But packaging is always designed with tradeoffs so they may have been focusing on part cost and customer experience rather than assembly time and piece count. Just different frame of mind
@@TheJttv Judging from the shots of them assembling it they probably aren't putting out a huge number of props in a day, so it might not make that much of a difference in cost/time to pack it the way they did.

@@FlightChops I was goofing. In software, ASCII is American Standard Code for Information Interchange, which is the original computer character encoding that succeeded the Baudot Teletype code. Unicode is the new encoding that allows many more glyphs to accommodate non-Latin languages.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. I was just having fun with this title, and trying to be a little hyperbolic... agreed about the literal grammar; but using your "dead" example, if some one was peacefully passed away of old age in their bed VS exploded in a ball of flames of a violent car crash, I'd still be inclined to say "Woah, that guy is REALLY dead"... While understanding that the qualifier is redundant.
