Still crazy to me that 16 was never given a Pro patch. 16 was supposed to be this major "from the ground up designed for PS5" exclusive, and yet it's just kind of been abandoned.
That's what square does. They abandon most of their games. I've been waiting for xv to get a ps5 update and nothing. Only reasons rebirth got an update is because it's a 3 current part trilogy, and all the complaints.
I wonder if it's just about where the team is at. They've moved on the dlc is wrapped up and the pc port is done and the team has probably been dissolved and moved onto other projects. There's probably no one to work on pro patch. And you probably don't want to give the work to just anyone to work on.
The FF16 team was disbanded and split up and the devs were sent to work on some upcoming square games. They'd either have to pull some of the developers away from whatever they are working on now or they'd have to form a new team but square obviously isn't willing to do that.
I've finished the game on a PS5 + 1080p screen and I've never seen such poor performance and imagine quality in the 60fps mode. This should be illegal!!
I *love* that you covered Stranger of Paradise-thank you, Oliver! I had always wondered what the results of that image quality update were following DF’s original coverage. Awesome idea to cover every FF game, really informative.
It already gets a noticable bump to image clarity and higher rendering resolution as it’s using dynamic res currently. It also gets a nice bump to performance as well, and while there are still dips, it’s well within the VRR window now when they occur. So we are getting a nice upgrade here even without a bespoke patch. The game is just really heavy in general. Any further gains needed will be seen with the PS6 where it should finally hit a locked 60. If you haven’t fired it up yet and have a Pro, you will notice a difference immediately though.
Please cover Empire of the Ants on PS5 Pro! It's one of the most impressive games graphically so far on PS5 Pro and the unique tiny scale really emphasizes the granular details! It should definitely sit somewhere in Digital Foundry's best graphics of the year list!
Crazy how a game that visually looks worse than nioh 2 on the ps4 using the same engine needed a mid gen refresh just to perform decently. Koei tecmo's games are solid but their technical standards are absolutely woeful
@@jeveritt8398I think it’s a team ninja thing. All of their recent releases in the past decade have had subpar console performance. Nioh 2, wo long, Stranger, RotR all have had performance issues on their base platforms.

Its sad seeing 16 wasn't well optimized neither on pc and didn't even got a pro patch. It's my favorite ff. The eikon battles were meant to be played in 4k60fps
Eikon battles are one of my main gripes of 16, all the boss fights play the same every time, so much so they are the bits I look forward to the least, I want to approach boss fights differently not just have them as spectacles to be seen once and then dumped. Killed a lot of the replayability factor, I feel they should have been rarer and more evenly paced with a lot more player agency. By the end of titan lost I was done with them, especially with the sheer amount of repeated animations. Every single fight has the enemy rub ifrits face up against a wall for a quarter mile... Snooze. For me, FF boss fights are all about strategy, this was mindless boss fighting, a spectacle - yes, but actually challenging or good - no. Rebirth hard mode gave me all the strategy set up joy and spectacle from fights I could possibly need, all while being in control of a full party and not having to do quicktime events, not only that, but a unique boss fight theme for every single boss with multiple phases. Bosses done bang right!
It already does look and run significantly better in performance mode due to the extra power and dynamic resolution. That was one of the first non-Pro-patched games I tested. A patch would be even better obviously.
The pop-in Rebirth is very distracting, instead of focusing only on picture quality, they should have improved other aspect of the game like the draw distance imo.

Pretty weird that Final Fantasy 16 didn’t get a patch, but it does run great on PC hardware depending although at times with the boss battles the frame rate without frame generation can definitely still suffer but not for long during those battles. I do wish they were able to uncap the cut scenes without modding the game but for the amazing story and the complete package that it is, compared to how XV was for so long. I’m really disappointed it didn’t do better sales wise and now we are seeing SE do a complete about face for that reason. For one I’m very glad that they have gotten their heads out of their bums and have decided to do multi platform strategy once again . Overall I do think it was designed to just be played at 30 fps across the board on its original hardware but one has to wonder if a PS5 pro patch would help.
Square Enix engineers SUCK at optimizing for PlayStation in my opinion. The gulf between these visuals and something like Horizon Forbidden West is so vast its insane.
It's the same upscaling you get in various art programs if you take the image and resize it larger. Technically doesn't have a single algorithm so it can vary between bicubic or Lanczos or such. But it's a basic upscale without awareness of the geometry or previous frames or anything.
Generally, with computer science terminology, "naive" tends to mean something is straightforward and simple. I don't have a degree in computer science, and am not a developer/coder, so my explanation may be incomplete or even outright incorrect, but I believe it's something like... a naive upscale would just copy the pixels of the nearest neighbor, in say, a 1080p image, so 1 pixel of yellow becomes a square of 4 yellow pixels, a single blue pixel becomes a square of 4 blue pixels, etc.. Then you've technically got 4x the resolution of the source image, so you've "filled" a 4k image with a 1080p image, and it scales "cleanly" in that nothing should be deformed. Whereas a more robust approach using TAA (or similar techniques like DLSS or PSSR) are much more complex and can produce much better results, if implemented correctly.
30 FPS but its an action game, so it's basically gonna be a slideshow. The game has low difficulty but none of the modes are good honestly, the game is so poorly optimized.
They should release PS5 Pro patches for FFX/FF12/FF13/FF14/FF15/FFVII: Remake/FF16, etc. The first 4 games could easily do 4k120. FF15 and FFVII Remake should have a 4k60 quality Pro mode. FF15 was the first major FF to introduce advanced upscaling, HDR, etc features on PC.
For Rebirth, even the bare minimum when it comes to temporal upscalers would've done a 1000 times better job than whatever Vaseline they used in the base console. Seems like a marketing move more than anything, even the awful FSR1 that they used in XVI would've done a better job. Doesn't make sense why wouldn't they implement things like FSR2 when it is open-source and so easy to implement.
No FFXVI Patch for the P5 Pro was one of the reasons why I gave a fuck about it. Square Enix games were actually even the reason numero uno why I even bought a PS5 in the first place. Unfortunately fF16 needs a beefy gpu with at least 16gb vram, to run without stutters. My 3080 struggles a lot the the current vram issues are the reason why I wont buy the joke of card called the 5080. 16gb will make me suffer in 2 years just like the 3080

One hour in FF16 my first impressions are flickery low res self-shadows, LOTS of low res textures EVERYWHERE, poor skin shading (no subsurface scattering), some very low res sky boxes, lots of very ‘plain’ environments (e.g. rooms with repeating textures and very little detail, not many objects placed such as the throne room). Also had two crashes just in the first hour… running on 4090 at 4K.
How can the Rebirth developers themselves be okay with that foliage pop-in right in front of you while traversing? It’s insane and I still can’t believe it hasn’t been addressed. Same for Dragons Dogma. NPC’s pop up right in front of you. You won’t see that on any Horizon game. Not to this extent anyway. If there’s something that’s immersion breaking it’s up front pop in, screen tearing and major frame drops. I guess my OCD has a lot to do with it bothering me. If I were a dev my games would probably take 6 years of dev time to release. 😅
@@stargateheaven23 They did not updated it, they game was released on Xbox One and One X, the One X versions targeted 60fps day one. It's not an update, that's just how the port was done at the time. The ps5 and Series X didn't existed yet.
So Rebirth's Performance mode on PS5 doesn't use TSR to render at 4k? It just uses TSR to render at ~1300p, then just uses dumb upscaling to 4k...? Well that completely explains the very poor, blurry results on PS5 and does not provide a case for PSSR.
Placing my bets before I get to it -- Stranger of Paradise is still a hot mess. EDIT: Got to it, and... I guess frame rates are up, but I'm more concerned about how the game visually looks like it's smothered in vaseline.

I'm gonna play ffvii rebirth 4K 120fps next month, I will post proof of it
stranger of paradise 🔥🔥🔥
I still wonder why FF12 never got a 60fps update like it has on xbox
Because SE, that's why
@ well they updated the version on xbox to 60fps though
@@stargateheaven23 They did not updated it, they game was released on Xbox One and One X, the One X versions targeted 60fps day one. It's not an update, that's just how the port was done at the time. The ps5 and Series X didn't existed yet.
@ yeah it came out for one box one and xbox one x had a patch i thought.
Still, they need to come back at patch it.
Looking forward to PS6 for most of these heavy games that utilise upscaling or UE5 in general
Now do a comparison with the PC versions
Ever heard of the word "please"?
So Rebirth's Performance mode on PS5 doesn't use TSR to render at 4k? It just uses TSR to render at ~1300p, then just uses dumb upscaling to 4k...? Well that completely explains the very poor, blurry results on PS5 and does not provide a case for PSSR.
It doesn't use TSR. It's just UE4 TAA.
Counting the days until the PC version of Rebirth, game will be gorgeous in DLSS.
@@steel5897 I hope it will be better than the terrible port of Remake. If they do it right, it will looks way than the ps5/ps5 pro versions.
When PSSR on Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters!?
Do a video on slitterhead
PS5 Pro is simultaneously necessary to play new titles, and the worst move Sony has made in a decade.
Worse how?
I just want them to remove the 30fps lock from FF12 😞
Placing my bets before I get to it -- Stranger of Paradise is still a hot mess.
EDIT: Got to it, and... I guess frame rates are up, but I'm more concerned about how the game visually looks like it's smothered in vaseline.
Instead of "odd," I would call "versatility" a stupid term to have gone with.
Just target native 4k@60 with whatever sacrifices are required, and screw the graphics whores.
Hopefully Rebirth on pc will be better than this.
Didn't know FF16,or even CC and REMAKE were using DRS. This is nice! :D
CC is just native 4k
The pop-in on FF7 Rebirth is incredibly distracting
Look the new patch for Black Myth Wukong!
