I think the father should not have let her live at home before the wedding. Take her and all of her things to Jake’s place. All of the pressure of the wedding living with his disapproving parents. That might have made them decide not to marry. But I think he definitely should have tried giving Jake a job, or if he can’t learn it, then help him get a different job that he can do. This started to feel like punishment or revenge.
