So happy to join you in this video to learn more about physical collecting for longevity purposes. Cheers for the next one 💜 also, Witcher 3 lovers UNITE
The Star Ocean recent release has the "download required" label, but the download is just for extra language packs. The full game with english and Japanese is completely on the cartridge.
lol the replies to this comment. There's another game that recently had a download required misprint label - OPUS: Echo of Starsong Full Bloom Edition. It's really bad on the collector edition in particular with how it obscures the cover art text 😔
Great list from both of you! And thank you Emily for bringing up eco-waste in relation to code in a box releases. More people need to talk about this aspect of collecting.
All this info on “complete” physical games is so helpful! Kinda wish this was spelled out by companies before preorders go up… I’ve got a lot of these as I assumed they were complete at the time lol
I still need to pick up The Witcher 3 and Skyrim for the switch, they're some of my favorite games of all time! It definitely would be great to replay those portably!
I had them both on Switch but sold them as soon as I got a Steam Deck. Both of those play much better there portably 100%. The Switch and the Steam Deck are perfect companions to one another as far as portable consoles go.
Hi! I’ve noticed a huge improvement in your presentation skills in your videos lately! Specifically your ability to really intertwine your personality and love for gaming into a smooth and engaging flow. Keep doing an awesome job. I love your videos!
We need more of these types of videos. So much useful info! Undertale came out in 2015 originally and 2018 for Switch. I really doubt they'll release an updated cart at this point, unfortunately. If you care more about playing your games than collecting them on a shelf, the only advice I have is to PLAY your newer games sooner rather than later. Anything after the PS2 is questionable, honestly.
Yeah, it may be unlikely to see a revised reprint of Undertale, though I can also see this game coming out on the next Nintendo console so that may also contribute to why I haven't picked it up physically yet.
The South Park games are amazing. I mostly play my switch lite so a lot of these games that are meant to be played on a 60 inch screen are really hard to play on a 4inch screen. I’m replaying shining force 2 on the switch now on that genesis combo pack cartridge. That’s my current rpg if that counts
Thanks for the video After watching it I gotta say though that me personally would recommend buying Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and Diablo 3 because they all come with the full game in the cartridge. Yes they do not have the lastest version but you could play the game without any download. One thing to keep an eye out for is the version of Skyrim you are buying, the reprint comes with a patch that affected performance.
Have you heard of the games Gothic 1 and 2? They are not super well known in the US but in some countries in Europe they are viewed as some of the best RPGs of all time. And last year they also got ported to the Switch, around 20 years after they came out on PC. Unfortunately the launch versions were very buggy, so the unpatched physical versions should be avoided but I enjoyed playing through the patched versions of both games. Still some amazing games, although they might be difficult for new players, since they don't really hold your hand as much as modern games.
Was hoping to hear if either of you had an opinion on the baldur's gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale/Planescape Torment releases. Both are great games, but it just feels weird to be paying the prices they now command (especially for BG1/2) for such old games that essentially have not really been updated aside from slightly better graphics and updated controls.
Two notes: The Diablo 3 Eternal collection in other platforms do not include the necromancer character (and other contents) on disc, it's a free update content. So the Switch version, while "requiring" an update, is actually the most complete physical edition. And in the case of Skyrim, I would say that it doesn't matter the platform you play on, it's a buggy game by nature 😅 So I wouldn't be worried by the Switch version in particular. Only, get used to save frecuently and be sure to have 5-10 manual save slots, so you can avoid getting locked by bugs.
I've learned so much about "complete" physical games from your channel. I wasn't fully aware of what that really meant as a physical collector. I have to pay more attention now to the copies I get!
I'm glad to share some insight on what I've learned about this topic in the last couple of years - I have to remember to be a bit more careful too especially when it comes to new releases.
This content is so valuable as a physical collector. When you look at some of the things that have happened recently with the DS online shutdown and the sprint to preserve the Dragon Quest VII DLC, having it all on cartridge is more important to me than ever
You know, nobody really talks about the whole digital dilemma when it comes to physical copies. I would love to see a buy now before rare series. The people that do them that I’ve seen, never mention anything about having to download additional content or bug fixes.
@@jonpeterson4309 I can see that for the PlayStation or Xbox because none of their games come complete in disc, it’s always a download but a lot of the switch games are complete on the cart. I get not all of them but still.
I'm a bit conflicted when it comes to hyping up rare games on a platform like youtube. There are many rare games that I personally would never play. But I plan to make a video sometime soon on how I plan to prioritize games on my wishlist as we start to see the end of the Switch life cycle.
Emily you should consider Immortals Fenyx Rising for PS5. It's Assasins Creed Odyssey meets Tears of the Kingdom. It's a super cheap, super overlooked game. Huge open world, amazing gameplay, very witty voice acting.
I would highly recommend Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on the Switch. It runs just as great as it does on any other platform, and though there are glitches inherent from the original game, for the most part, it is a wonderful world to be in and explore. The artwork on the case is also amazing! I actually got the game cheaper physically than I could get it on the eShop. Also, Disco Elysium is one of my favorite games of all-time, but yeah, it launched with a lot of issues on Switch unfortunately. I personally played it on PC.
here after the cozy collab video Ems. great picks and thanks for the heads up. yeah im also not a fan of the code in the boxes thing. i had it happen to me twice and both times it was the wrong code!😫😫
I'd really like to see a part 2 to this, maybe within a different genre (like the one you do on Miss Bubbles channel.) I am recently collecting for Switch, partly because of you, and knowing what to avoid would be really helpful.
That’s an interesting topic, I almost never think of the Western and PC RPGs when I think of Switch collecting. Usually leave that to PlayStation and just giving up on PC with Steam. Hopefully we’ll see some Switch 2 versions that bring some of the more demanding games further along, I’d love that.
Love how both you and Bubbles released these collab videos on the same day! I'm hoping Fangamer have their own release of Undertale as well, would love to get it physically for an affordable price.
This is a great video, and I'm also super happy to have learned through this that they restocked on Disco Elysium for PS5. I bought it for PS5 back when it first came out, and then the aftermarket price rose to well over $100, so I kinda HAD to sell it... (I also have it on Switch). But now I can buy it back for the original MSRP! 😄
I love your channel and content! I'm also a physical switch collector and I'm curious in your take of digital foundry's recent video on switch carts' lifespan.
Your presentation is getting a lot better, much smoother and you seem more comfortable in front of the camera. Good video! I also prefer physical copies for the reasons you outlined. Digital stores close and the games will be lost forever. Money spent for no value. :(
This was a great video idea. Disco Elysium Final Cut is such a great game but yeah the performance does have it's issues and after the patch during my playthrough it still crashed more then a few times, so perhaps pick it up elsewhere if the Switch isn't the only option. Another good game is Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning which I was surprised how well it run with how briefly I played it. And though I haven't played the Switch version Torchlight 2 can be a blast with friends and works well as a Single Player experience.
At least if you have the physical version of all of these games, you can resell it. Regardless of the download size I always recommend physical for the resale value alone.
Yup, there are resale options. Though if a game is on sale for like $5 or below digitally, may be worth picking it up instead of a not so great physical copy you may have trouble reselling in the future.
great video and as always ao informative! a few of these games i had on my list but had no idea about the huge downloads for some of them, thanks for doing all this research :)
Love the topic for this video! It’s extremely informative and helpful. I do admit that I have a few of the physical games that should be avoided (Bioshock, Outer Worlds, etc) but I’ve already completed them on a console other than the Switch.
A nice, informative video for switch collectors 🤓 Most of the games that are on the "pass" section, I have digitally. Like the bioshock collection. Waited for it to come down to $10 before jumping on it on the eShop.
When you can get a great deal digitally it sometimes makes more sense than getting the subpar physical edition - especially if it's a game you plan to play right away.
I'll list a few western developed physical released RPGs. Star Renegades. So first off, I own the PS4 version and in combat, even the PS4 version can have framerate issues. I think it's a CPU issue because the game has the exact same framerate issues on the PS5. So Star Renegades is a turn based RPG, but it's a bit different than the traditional turn based RPG. The developers call it a reactive turn based combat system and It's closer to MS Saga where you see a generic value of what the enemies will be doing. However, with Star Renegades at the start of every turn, you can view exactly what every single enemy will be doing. You'll see the weapon damage, who the enemy is targeting, where the enemies appear on the attack timeline, and the game will even show you how much damage your characters will receive with those actions. This is where the player then chooses their actions. The character class types are attackers, tanks, delayers, support, or a mix of multiple class types and this is where you'll determine whether to try and kill the enemies or delay them before they can take action, defend to reduce the damage, etc. The game uses the mechanics of your usual procedural games, but it's much better balanced than pretty much anything on the market. While reviews state it's a difficult game, the characters they start you off with for your first run are perfect for a normal playthrough and I finished the game on my very first run. There's a starting map where you'll take three turns to move around locations on the map, and then you'll take nine nine turns to move across each main map. During those nine turns you'll camp three times and at the end fight a boss. The fourth main area has you do a few battles then two boss battles. Without fast forwarding your first time might be 10 hours or less. A great and well paced turn based RPG. There's a patch after the physical version released that includes the moon base dungeon and one additional class. The moon base does make it easier to get character's relationship levels maxed out to get the characters easier(which makes for a lot of play throughs, but it's not a major loss this not being on disc. There are 16 other characters and moon base is just a side dungeon. ------ Salt and Sanctuary. If someone didn't know any better they'd say this was that one 2D FromSoftware game with just how like for like it is to the Souls titles. Salt and Sanctuary perfects the Souls formula on a 2D plane while adding in some exceptional platforming mechanics that also has the character grabbing and pulling themselves up onto platforms if they can't quite make the jump. Instead of just choosing the stats you'd like to level as you would in a Souls game, Salt and Sanctuary has a FF10 sphere grid system which starts you off at a point and each level up you get allows you to move one space along the grid and learn that skill. Weapons levels and armor levels are required to be learned to equip the higher level weapons. I'd say the one major issue that damage is skewed towards heavier weapons. You can use magic and any other weapon you want and make your way through the game, but heavy weapons are the most powerful while having decent range for melee weapons. ------- Bug Fables. I was immediately sold on this game after watching Arlo's review. I've watched a few reviews and Arlo's review is the bes and it will immediately sell you on this great game. My one complaint though is that there are only three characters and the game does fall into a little bit of repetitiion in the very end of the game when you find and use the same strategy at that point in the game battle after battle. Throughout the rest of the game it doesn't really have this issue because you don't yet have all of the medals required to get away with using one best strategy so for most of the game it is a great game. --------- Divinity Original Sin 2. When you can't play Baldur's Gate 3, this is next best thing and there's a physical release on the Switch. Unfortunately it's LRG so you'll be paying a lot more than buying it on the PS4 or XBO. This is one of my favorite games on last gen consoles and is the game I've put the most time in than anything on this list(combined.) Divinity Original Sin 2 has an optional honor difficulty that saves your game if anyone dies and deletes your save if everyone does. I've gotten as far as act 4 on this difficulty and have played a lot. Part of the reason why I have 400+ hours.
Another good video on collecting. I bought a 2k double cartridge pack with the bioshock collection and borderlands collection a few years ago on a black friday deal. I knew going in that each cart only had one title on it. But the price was super low at $30 for 6 games i couldn't pass on it. I also have the cart for diablo 3 as well. I could be wrong on this but i think the downloaded stuff is just for multi-player season updates, i think the game should be playable for the most part. Also i think skyrim may be mostly playable except for dlc. I'm not entirely sure. Years ago I was without a home internet connection and can't recall if i tried playing skyrim without it or not.
This is the first video I watched of yours, and I liked it keep them coming. Anyway I was wondering if you knew of Lady decade, because I think you, and her would be great doing a video together. You and Miss bubbles are a good duo though so keep up the good work ladies and hope you both have a good day.
Thanks for the detailed video and cautioning us! The proportion of new games available exclusively as digital downloads has risen so sharply throughout the past decade… And with the games mentioned on this video it seems large publishers are also de-prioritizing *proper physical releases for their marquee titles. I wonder if this is an outcome of companies 1) wanting to cut production cost of physical media and its distribution, as well as 2) development teams being given unrealistic deadlines where the game is incomplete and needs to be patched at a later date.
I was expecting an indie direct breakdown, but a two part collaboration was a real surprise, maybe the next collab will be Euro themed? Can't really tell if it's a blood moon or sunset design on your shirt but it looks Gaar-ate, lol.
Haha, no worries! I kinda miss the big PC boxes myself. I think I may have a few at my parents house from back in the day - I should go try to unearth them at some point.
First - click like before watching, because video always guaranteed good!! I didn't even realize some of those games had been ported for Switch. Banner Saga is a fave. I was drawn to it initially because of the Don Bluth/Ralph Bakshi style of animation. Once I figured out the mechanics it became a favorite, and the fact that it does such a good job to incorporate my choices from the previous game into the next one (like Witcher does also) it made it really a cool overarching narrative and journey. It's odd that they require a download (is it a patch or something?), because I don't think they are huge games, even the third one is only around 6 gigabytes in size (at least on PC). Disco Elysium is in my backlog (managed by your spreadsheet 😀) - looking forward to playing that one soon. Glad to see you back and congratulations on getting started with your new job! Now I just have to find one....
I was a bit perplexed about the forced download for the Banner Saga games (at least the North American version). And thank you! Best of luck with your job hunt!
Great vid! I had bought Bioshock and sold it before I ever opened it due to the digital download thing-unless it's a game I really like (eg Life is Strange) I really try to avoid physical titles that have large mandatory downloads. Glad to know West of Loathing gets the seal of approval-kicking myself a bit for not picking up when it got the reprint but its been on my radar forever, oh well lol :)
Limited Run had a physical version of Star Wars knights of the old republic(not sure if that disqualifies it). definitely one of my favorite games of all-time, and i dont think you have to be into starwars at all to really get into it(though it would help 😅). I believe everything is on the cart? as for the 2nd one, i know that one had some controvery with its port with some promised material not being brought over.
With the exception of the South Park game (which I didn't play much of), I've somehow unintentionally avoided every single game on this list. 😂 Also, welcome back Emily! Great to see you uploading videos again.
I actually bought Skyrim as well for the Switch, it was ok. Same with Diablo 3. And BioShock series I actually bought them back in the X360/PS3 days, I bought them on PS4, same with Fractured But Whole, it is interesting to hear about the physical copy differences! Also I bet once the Switch is done as an active console, the homebrew scene should pick up the slack, as there will be versions of those games fully patched(albeit with no online service as, well the whole "no longer in production" thing). I've been noticing that as I'm softmodding my slightly older consoles that have an online component. Great video, and collab. Happy gaming! 😊🎮🖖🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈M
Great video Emily my recommendation would be dredge. the only physical switch games I stay away from are the ones with just the download code no physical game cartridge I hate those other than that I'm a sucker for the Nintendo switch games physical I don't really care if there's a download got to have that physical
DD runs amazing on the switch over 300hrs definitely recommend it & definitely a JRPG loving the second one also!, worse experience for me was darksiders 3 (it’s horrid on switch feels like you are playing at 10fps)
I love your vid. You're really funny when you said 10 games to avoid but then after that you said oh by the way I just want to point out by saying you can buy any game you want. It was really funny though because I wasn't expecting you to say that as it's like a thing that's understood. Anyways very cool vid Emily. Games to avoid on switch. That's a tough one. I would say all multi plats because you can play them on your PS5 which is a lot better because of the smooth frame rates. Games to own on the switch, maybe the 1st party games like Mario, Zelda & Metroid games. I know you are into RPG games. Oh what about buying Mario RPG?
*smh* I can't believe that "code in the box" is a thing... what a waste of materials for a game that should just be released on the eShop (or, even better, actually put on a cartridge)! Thankfully, that hasn't happened to me.
Disco Elysium: The final cut - Nintendo switch - The JPN cart is only 000 with 1.0.0 version, whereas there are now 003 revision cartridge available for EUR and USA which is 1.0.3 version of the game (still this version require 1.3GB download to update to the latest version which is 1.0.9). Are you saying that even these 003 cartridges (EUR & USA) are not a worthy purchase for the game collectors? Your opinion will be helpful for me to decide.
Super mario rpg (european) is complete in cartridge, Eiyuden chronicles rising (from play asia) too, dragon quest 1,2,3 and final fantasy x/x2 (from play asia) too, river city girls 1 and 2 ( from play asia) too ....those are the rpgs or somewhat rpgs i could think of that i have ...neptunia senran kagura ninja wars ( europe) also all on the cartridge. So in the end i contribute zero western rpgs on the cartridge...😅 I still think some of the games i mention can be of interest for some people to know they are complete in cartridge. I like the musou pirate warriors 3 as well, not and rpg but a good game especialy if you also enjoy one piece and musou / warriors games.
Life is strange in physical copy is also one to definitely avoid. It came out super buggy and while they have patched a lot there’s still some issues. Definitely not playable in its original form if you don’t have access to to the patches. I think it will be lost media in a generation or 2.
The witcher 3 is one of my favorite contemporary rpg's, but I definitely did not 1st experience it on the switch lol, I was deep in this game before the switch released and I would suggest the xbox or ps4 for 1st playing the witcher 3, I have it on the switch and started my 4th playthrough ob the switch being very surprised
NGL, you and MissBubbles got me thinking when it came to talking about Dragon's Dogma. It's strange I never would consider Dragon's Dogma a JRPG, but if you asked me what I would categorize an RPG developed by Capcom. Of course I would have said it was a JRPG lol Just funny that I never really thought that a Japanese developer could make a Western RPG before.

Glad to see you making videos again Emily! Hope you've been well!
Job transitioning has been stressful, but I'm glad to be back :)
@@orbalology Do you like your new job?
Yes! I'm enjoying it so far :)
Thank you for all the hard work with the channel, your content is great!
Thank you so much!
I thought I've spent 50 hours to finish The Witcher 3, but it was around 200. Guess the immersion is real. Great list Emily 😊😊😊
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen was an excellent recommendation by the way!!!
Love how both you and Bubbles released these collab videos on the same day! I'm hoping Fangamer have their own release of Undertale as well, would love to get it physically for an affordable price.

Skyrim, Witcher 3, ACH on handheld during corona. Good times
It's pretty cool of you to team up with other creators. I'd never heard of MissBubbles before, but I'll check out her content.
She's great, definitely check out her channel when you get the chance :)
what an awesome video! thanks so much
I love this topic. Thanks for calling these out!
Thanks for watching :)
I love your channel and content! I'm also a physical switch collector and I'm curious in your take of digital foundry's recent video on switch carts' lifespan.
Love your growth on the channel!!
Your presentation is getting a lot better, much smoother and you seem more comfortable in front of the camera. Good video!
I also prefer physical copies for the reasons you outlined. Digital stores close and the games will be lost forever. Money spent for no value. :(
Thanks so much!
Yay m favorite streamer is back and with an awesome video. Thanks :)
Glad we could bring some of these physical limitations to your attention :)
Love this video! Keep up both of yall!!!
I love Witcher 3. Gwent is so fun and you get a bonus entirely open world on top of that. 😂
Love the topic for this video! It’s extremely informative and helpful. I do admit that I have a few of the physical games that should be avoided (Bioshock, Outer Worlds, etc) but I’ve already completed them on a console other than the Switch.
I've picked up a few not so ideal physical copies as well, an honest mistake I think most make!
A nice, informative video for switch collectors 🤓
Most of the games that are on the "pass" section, I have digitally. Like the bioshock collection. Waited for it to come down to $10 before jumping on it on the eShop.
When you can get a great deal digitally it sometimes makes more sense than getting the subpar physical edition - especially if it's a game you plan to play right away.
definitely improved the audio recently, nice work
Yo….that collection wall is looking dope!

Salt and Sanctuary.
-------
Bug Fables.
---------
Divinity Original Sin 2. When you can't play Baldur's Gate 3, this is next best thing and there's a physical release on the Switch. Unfortunately it's LRG so you'll be paying a lot more than buying it on the PS4 or XBO. This is one of my favorite games on last gen consoles and is the game I've put the most time in than anything on this list(combined.)
Divinity Original Sin 2 has an optional honor difficulty that saves your game if anyone dies and deletes your save if everyone does.
I really recommend Risen, a WRPG form the creators of Gothic saga. A very unique, eurojanky, but great RPG experience.
Welcome back 🎉
Diablo has a big download on the ps4 also. Switch version even without the download is pretty good imo
Kingdom Come Deliverance would be a great physical switch game to have too
I was expecting an indie direct breakdown, but a two part collaboration was a real surprise, maybe the next collab will be Euro themed? Can't really tell if it's a blood moon or sunset design on your shirt but it looks Gaar-ate, lol.
Please don't karate chop me! Since they mostly killed PC titles in boxes, all I got are my extensive online game collections.
Haha, no worries! I kinda miss the big PC boxes myself. I think I may have a few at my parents house from back in the day - I should go try to unearth them at some point.
I’ve been eyeing west oof loathing for a while now but didn’t get it because it wasn’t physical. Now that it is I will have to pick it up.
Dragons dogma is 100% a western rpg. Started playing 2 after beating persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy VII rebirth and it is 🔥
Glad to hear it's been awesome! I'm thinking of grabbing it on the PS5 - possibly later this year after I lighten up my low buy :)
Great list of games. It’s so frustrating that even physical games are complete now.
This video is nothing short of genius.
I don't believe West of Loathing was a limited print, but I can see Serenity Forge reprinting more copies in the future! 🤞
Hey... is that a Rean Schwarzer t-shirt? I can't quite tell from the filming angle, but it looks amazing!
With the exception of the South Park game (which I didn't play much of), I've somehow unintentionally avoided every single game on this list. 😂
Also, welcome back Emily! Great to see you uploading videos again.
Thank you so much! It's great to be back :)
I did end up getting outer worlds today but it was $10 at Walmart and I also got Nier automata for $10
I actually bought Skyrim as well for the Switch, it was ok.
With fallout doing so well on amazon prime I wonder if bioshock might be another candidate for a game to get turned into a tv show.
I think a Bioshock show (or even film) would be super cool! If a studio picks it up I hope they can do it justice!
Great information. 😊
DD runs amazing on the switch over 300hrs definitely recommend it & definitely a JRPG loving the second one also!, worse experience for me was darksiders 3 (it’s horrid on switch feels like you are playing at 10fps)
For some reason, I was thinking like cowboy westerns lol was like "No way there are that many cowboys games" 😅😅😅
*smh*
I can't believe that "code in the box" is a thing... what a waste of materials for a game that should just be released on the eShop (or, even better, actually put on a cartridge)!
Thankfully, that hasn't happened to me.
She's so cute with those large, expressive eyes that light up when she especially likes something
Nice co-op and great tips! Seems like Skyrim and Diablo are too heavy for Switch 🙂
Ah, sadly they are. But there is some hope with maybe the Switch 2... potentially 🤞
Your opinion will be helpful for me to decide.
love your videos thanks for the effort
Thank you for watching!
Who did you choose on your playthrough? Yennifer or Triss? Or neither? For me I had to pick Yen. Every time lol
Super mario rpg (european) is complete in cartridge, Eiyuden chronicles rising (from play asia) too, dragon quest 1,2,3 and final fantasy x/x2 (from play asia) too, river city girls 1 and 2 ( from play asia) too ....those are the rpgs or somewhat rpgs i could think of that i have
...neptunia senran kagura ninja wars ( europe) also all on the cartridge.
I completed 2 runs of witcher 3 on my pc and tbh i just cant tolerate the switch version . Btw nice video , you gained yourself a sub …..
Life is strange in physical copy is also one to definitely avoid. It came out super buggy and while they have patched a lot there’s still some issues. Definitely not playable in its original form if you don’t have access to to the patches. I think it will be lost media in a generation or 2.
I like the thumbnail haha
Haha, thanks! Decided to try something a little new :)
I probably asked this but have you tried the Super Mario RPG Legend of the Stars? I've heard they have updated it from the SNES version.
