GRAND SEIKO 9F Quartz! The Ideal First Luxury Watch? (SBGV215)

- My experience buying a pre-owned 'grail' watch from Japan has been first class! Grand Seiko's handmade 9F Quartz movements are one of the best options around for those seeking a true luxury handcrafted watch at an affordable budget. They retail at half the price of Grand Seiko's other movements, have a 50 year service interval ( yes 50 years!!) and often have dials that are simple, timeless and classical in layout.
This model, the SBGV 215, has elegant everyday proportions that will suit a variety of wrist sizes, with a deep black gloss dial, Zaratsu polished 39mm case and slim 10mm thickness. Even better value pre-owned, you will find cherished examples at less than half their retail price.
I am the proud owner of a Grand Seiko quartz watch, and I must express my utmost satisfaction with its exceptional performance. It boasts an impressive accuracy of merely 10 seconds per year, which, remarkably, surpasses its stated specifications in real-world usage. Given its quartz nature, it is highly probable that this timepiece will endure for my entire lifetime. In my humble opinion, Grand Seiko quartz watches stand tall among the finest in the world. I appreciate your attention to this matter. Indeed, it employs a quartz movement, but it distinguishes itself from conventional quartz movements by incorporating jewels, much like an automatic movement. I extend my gratitude for your excellent video presentation on RUclips.
Well thank you for such a thoughtful message. I agree!
Such a great choice. Like pretty much anything Japanese, simplicity outshines excess. There is nothing more intriguing than a deep black dial. Congrats and welcome to this illness, we call the watch hobby.
Thanks
Congrats on the purchase, Grand Seiko Quartz are one of my favorite watches. While I'm more of an omega guy, I do appreciate the Grand Seiko's, let's just say, there is a reason why I call Grand Seiko's "Art Watches" (because of how beautiful and simple they are).
Wear it well, and take care of it, it will take care of you.
Thanks, Lots of Aqua Terra viewing for me also
I have an automatic GS from 1972. 50 years old and unpolished gold cap, AND unserviced. Keeps amazing time. Date works. The only broken bit is the date quickset. Even the mechanical ones can last
A cut above
There is such thing as 'perfection' in watches
There is
Great choice! Seiko is a fascinating brand, with great models and an astonishing history. I tend to say it was Seiko pushed the Swiss brands out of their comfort zone. My favorite is the SSC009P3 as my daily rocker while I plan a GS as soon as our offspring starts to earn its own money 😊
I'll check that reference
Nice timepeice that one. Welcome to the satisfying world of GS ownership.
That's a beautiful watch! Simplicity and elegance is just Grand Seiko's strong game, i love their work. Also, I'm absolutely fascinated by their dedication to perfecting the technical marvel that is the Quartz movement! If i had the money, i'd own a SBGO005 tomorrow.
Thanks for watching. This old video gets missed these days
Thanks for featuring this particular Grand Seiko, which will in all likelihood be my first Grand Seiko purchase watch when I eventually have the means to pick one up.
You won't be disappointed
Great watch. I have a friend who recently purchased Citizen chronomaster with red dial and it looks stunning. Your GS and that Citizen are the truly amazing and very special quartz watches.
I love Citizen and have a few to put on channel. Very torn between GS and the AQ4080-52L 37mm Citizen....maybe start saving
Good honest reveiw on a great watch been thinking about getting a grand seiko quartz and found this helpful
Great! Thanks
Great review! The case shape looks to have its roots from the Vintage Seiko V.F.A. Quartz 3823-7040.
The 9f quartz movement just ticks different! Can definitely stare at that for hours at a time. You have gained another subscriber👍
Excellent. I'll look into that vintage root. Thanks
Great video thanks! Love the GS Quartz, gonna get the new GMT.
Yes I keep looking at them
Very nice GS, congrats. Welcome to the hobby, no turning back now. You say grail but let’s face it, there will be more to come.
Already looking....
Great review !
Thanks. My first vid
fantastic piece!! shes a beauty
Yes. Hugs the wrist with unique case design
Love the inky black dial
Me too
Holy moly! That GS case is so unique, have never seen it before
Took some hunting
Great watch and review! I confess a couple years ago I didn't know what an automatic was either. This hobby pulls people in quickly it seems!
Totally
Congratulations on a great purchase, looks great.
Thanks!! Took some finding
Good luck to you and your channel, pal!
Great timepiece 👍
Thank you kindly!
Great choice!
I also have a large 7.5" wrist (19 cm). I am surprised to see the 40mm looks good on your wrist. Many GS look small on me. It looks like its an old model no longer produced. I recently purchased a GS SBGX347 for my wife. Gorgeous watch and she loves it. Now I want one. I love the quartz. 9 jewels with lots of gearing internally. Quite mechanical.
Yes, wouldn't get-away with any smaller tho
Nice choice. I love Grand Seiko i have two models one with this 9F caliber and second one Spring Drive. For me has GS best ratio value-money.who did not have GS I recommend trying. It's a great crafted watch
Thanks!
That is a beautiful Grand Seiko. I've decided that a quartz 9F movement is the GS I want. I've purchased several watches directly from Japan nad you can definitely get some great deals. I managed to get a Longines 'Flagship' (MSRP $1600 USD) for $600 preowned. It arrived in the Longines box and case and it was hard to find any mark on it suggesting it was preowned (I suspect it might have been a display model). You did well with this watch and I agree the black dial does look particularly appealing.
Thanks for that
Wunderschön. Reine Ästhetik.
A really beautiful watch with a high tech movement 👍
Yes. ...
Just beautiful dude. Well done Sir, nice choice indeed!
Thanks!
I have the 27 mm version of this watch in silver. It's beautiful!
Wow, I can imagine
Great watch! It reminds me of my Casio Oceanus s100
The finish is almost too good
GS Spring drive for me all day long.
Yes....maybe next time.
Looks nice, but I’m obsessed w mechanical watches 🤯 love the sweeping seconds hand moving smoothly… I go nuts looking at the seconds hand moving in a quartz watch 😢
Ha. Get both
Mechanical watches are great, until they need a service.
Can't go wrong with GS welcome to this crazy hobby good luck not going broke lol
Thanks, think I'm down this rabbit hole already....
gorgeous timepiece 😻
Thanks
lovely piece mate
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant choice.
Thanks
Great choice
Thnx
Great video! Thank you
Thanks for watching
got to be a mechanical GS , they really are the best , the power reserve etc , i love them ..
True, exceptional, but so are these particular quartz
What an amazing watch! I’m looking for similar watch myself and it would be lovely if you can make a video about the process of buying second hand watches from Japan. Thanks!
Buy the seller. Check the feedback I've had no problems. Don't forget to add 20% import tax dependent on location
Lovely watch! Can you please tell me the model of the first one you show? The seiko one in black I could not quite catch the model name. ( Sr 57?) Thank you
Sary57. My favourite watch. I'll be doing a video on that. Make sure you're subscribed
Would love a GS, but don’t like the thought of needing to pop the back to change the battery, so I’m going with the Citizen AQ Series. Same finishing quality on a HAQ movement watch but solar, so never a battery replacement.
All considered too here. The AQ 4080 HAQ in blue was very tempting. I love Citizen but eventually decided against a 37mm
Replacing the battery takes about 2 minutes. Once every couple of years.
Looks like a good choice for you. Personally I found GS a bit to blingy - had something similar but 37mm blue dial. Ideal would have been 38mm but alas they didn't have that.
Yes, they can be blingy. I made a subdued choice
Congrats, a really good watch. But GS cant beat Citizen when it comes to Quarz. The Citizen Chronomaster is better for me. But hey we are all different and thats the best thing about humanity.
Yes the Citizen AQ4080 was close for me but touch small at 37mm
Looking for a GS myself. If you dont mind - where did you find yours? Buying online - even thorough Ebay, is a bit risky - and other buyers experiences with traders is quite valuable. Can you drop a link to the sellers shop?
It was eBay, the seller do specialise in used GS, Omega with detailed description. Closer0294 not hard to find. Always check reviews
Congrats on your watch and thank you for having made the first video on this model !
May I ask you why you chose this model over the 3 others (sbgp003, sbgv223, sbgp011)?
They are all great! I almost went for the sbgv223, but this was 39mm, a unique case design, had the H link and was relatively undiscovered. All excellent
@@perfectwrist23 thank you :). I understand : this model has a very original case
What model is the first one you show on your wrist?
Sary 057. Discontinued gem
Beautiful, simple dial. Only issue for me is the 🦋 clasp.
Mmm it sits well I find
I got a green dial ,it wear like 35mm😅
I didn't know there was a green
Get out, while you can. It gets worse and more expensive. There is no grail watch. Once you have the watch you lust over, another one takes its’ place.
How do you break the cycle? Good to know we aren't alone
Look at the CAMERA, man, c'mon !!!!!
I know it's the phone. Skip forward a couple
Design is subjective.
Such an individual hobby, as in life I suppose
If you have basic knowledge in electronics you will know that the 50 years service interval is bullshit. A 50 year service interval implies the movement can go on for at least 100 years (must be able to last 2 services right) and there is no way any electronics can last that long, the electromigration alone will likely kill it within the first 50 years. I’m always impressed by how well the Japanese can fool the western world
Good viewpoint. I don't have any electronics knowledge so am happy to try it
@Bobby Wu I have plenty of Seiko and Citizen quartz watches that are, lo and behold, half a century old, and none have ever been serviced. All are in great, working order. This is not to say I disagree with you about the 9F's supposed 50-year service interval. This rumour was started based upon a misinterpretation of offhand comments made by the president of Grand Seiko USA. The lubricants alone will require normal service intervals, just like any mechanical watch.
@@arspistorica562 quartz movements CAN last 50 years but “a service interval of 50 years” misleads people into thinking that it will last for hundreds of years or more, as the assumption is that any decent movement can last at least several services right
@@arspistorica562 and no it’s not a rumour, it was on the GS websites many years ago but they’ve removed it years ago. The vacuum sealed chamber also doesn’t work (yep it doesn’t work). I have worked on a few earlier 9F quartz and the oil in all of them went dry around 15-20 years mark
@@Aztec1050 I've seen the lubricants go dry even sooner on some 9Fs. Thanks for the reply.
It would look so much better in 37 mm
On a large 7.5" wrist (19 cm)? It would look small.
Mmmm.....not on my wrist
