Likely they are USA made cigs which have high status value & Asia is the largest market for them since they finally (after 30 years in court) lost local markets in US in 80's and 90's. Probably best not to judge so harshly unless you know the people well. Perhaps you could turn your justifiable anger on cigarette manufacturers and much more importantly on USA gun and major weapons manufacturers who supply most dangerous weapons to the entire world. When I lived and worked in northern Sumatra I had 3 different orang cubs as pets. They were nasty, bitey little things. They have the typical monkey greed, which is, they will eat all the time if allowed. Discusting little pee and poo machines,l kept them till they were about 12 months old and then they were dispatched to the spirit world.
What CONSEQUENCE is going to be handed down on that bastard kept her as a pet?? His intent has ALWAYS been to SELL this baby on the exotic pet trade. He was in the possession of an ENDANGERED ANIMAL which is against the law.

Would love to see more women taking part in these rescues and as vets and as authoritative speakers. All we see is women as surrogate mothers doing babysitting and cleaning cages. Equality matters. Orangutans are of interest to many of us because the adult females and their children are completely independent of males except for mating.
It may be a while before you see women equally represented in these videos. Women have few rights in Indonesia and with the way the current culture and government are set up, women will continue to be second-class citizens for many years.
