Tracy naturally was always a good girl and very bright, she just lived in a broken home, missing her dad so much while her mother struggled to support them, practically poor and living under her brothers shadow at home while at the same time feeling like a nobody at school having to live under "glamorous" Evie's shadow at the same time.. so I can only imagine how lonely and worthless she must have felt. She figured being popular and cool was the only way she was going to get accepted that she turned on her real friends and put her family through emotional Hell bc Evie was such a bad influence on her.
But as we can see Evie's life wasn't perfect either, Brooke (her guardian) neglected her so many times allowing her to smoke and drink and bring boys over to have sex with them bc she was more concerned about being a "model" so desperately that she practically deformed her own face to possibly achieve that. And also let her boyfriend physically and sexually abuse Evie. She put her "wants" over her 13 year old cousins "needs".
Evie gives out many signs through out the movie how badly she wanted Tracy's life, borrowing her clothes, wanting to live with her, tried getting close to Mel.. while Tracy hated her home and was very ungrateful, Evie actually wanted her life instead. Which explains how alot of "happy" people may not be as happy as they appear on the surface. Evie may of seem to have it all at school, but on the inside she was just as broken as Tracy. Both were very jealous of each other for different reasons.
Evie did turn on Tracy, but that was obviously bc in her mind she felt betrayed by Tracy for not helping her get out of such a horrible situation in her home life. She desperately wanted to get away from Brooke but at the same time she was dragging Tracy down and it was such a toxic friendship. Mel made the right call not to adopt Evie, she knew she was the main reason why Tracy was messing up her life. The end of the day her daughter has to come first. Evie needed help and love, but that wouldn't have been the best way to do it.

It’s so crazy looking back on it when I was 16 I had a friendship exactly like this, nearly so identical it’s uncanny. I was Tracy and said friend was like Evie.
The friendship was incredibly toxic but I find myself missing it, there’s a bittersweet feel to it because outside of all the toxicity there were genuine moments, we loved eachother but our demons and envious feelings towards eachother made it all collapse. Same. My teens were a series of stupid decisions, drugs, shoplifting, pretty much any form of rebellion that felt good and could be enjoyed with my ‘bestie’ who lived in my parents house and eventually my apartment (because her own parents were abusive, but she was so ‘cool’ to anyone who saw her life from the outside and I was HONOURED when she became my bestie and wanted to hang out and do drugs and live In my room). My ‘bestie’ and I at the time loved this movie and used to quote it to each other (especially “I love you, you’re my girl, remember that okay”) and the whole time I was completely unaware of the warning it carried. Or mostly unaware. I kind of just blanked the final part.
(I would later financially support my ‘bestie’ for three years while she did drugs in the apartment I paid for, and since I did drugs since middle school, I felt hypocritical for telling her off, even tho I was working and paying for shit. Kicking her out and figuring my shit was the best thing I ever did and now this movie feels dark, but when I was actually 13 it felt like someone was speaking to me)
Kids. The moral of this story is, be wary of people who seem like good friends but lead you astray. I’m not saying I didn’t make bad choices, but I’m also saying a friendship you romanticise can blind you to just how bad those choices really are. Please be aware that while experimenting is normal, there comes a point where you HAVE to ask: is this person causing me to go downhill? Am
I doing more crazy shit because I want to impress this person for some reason? Is my friendship with this person dependant on self destructive behaviour?
Take care of yourselves. Forgive yourself for your mistakes but admit to them as well xxx

For me personally this movie is so touching and really reminds me of my own life but in a different way. Luckily I've never went through exactly what Tracy did, but I started having toxic, harmful friendships and lost my childhood and innocence mostly because of them; and after that, I started experiencing all this angst, anger and sadness and it completely changed me for the worst. After watching Thirteen, it really made me realize how fucked up all of this that I went through really was and it's even sadder to think that I was still a child (specifically 11) and my childhood was ripped off of me so soon. I honestly relate with Tracy so much, because not only did she got herself tangled in a horrible and destructive friendship, but they also show all the shit she was going through in her personal life as well as the pain she carried, how she grew up so soon, had all this suppressed angst and depression caused by her family dynamics, and her becoming a teenager… and she had to get in a situation like that for them to realize she was not okay, which just really hits home for me. I could write a whole essay talking about my views and opinions of this movie. It's so good.

They grew up in a rough neighborhood their family is messed up and stuff way different from me, but we were friends. They brought vapes to school , I vaped in the bathroom with them , I vaped at the movies with them . Basically i was totally out of character and I was turning into them. No actual sex or as much stealing, but I'm struggling with a weed addiction, ed, sh, blah blah blah. The last scene makes me sob because I've never been close with my mom, and a few years back when she found out about my sh she screamed at me and called me psychotic. I'll never forget that. I just wish she'd love me. I wish she'd hug me until I fell asleep. And she has no idea about me getting high all the time, drinking, etc., and sometimes I feel guilty but I can't be happy without the drugs.
and to add on I do have a friend similar to Evie, but she would never betray me like that ever

I was one of these girls skipping class to smoke at the park and changing my style to fit it and too look sexy so my crush and friends would like me almost failed because i was concerned about the WRONG things. My mom took me out and put me in a small school almost like homeschool where I focused on my education. However I will admit i was a lot boy crazy that never stopped. But I'm in a better place now with the best man💕

I act like them. sometimes I yell at my mom then cry about it. at thirteen I stole a bunch from stores because I felt pressured, i smoked from time to time. I did it the other day too. I'm fifteen now. I just want to live my life.

When i was about 12 yearsold till 16 yearsold i had a group of friends like that ( besides the drugs) i remember i was the new girl in Highschool and i was always the shy nerdy girl more the outcast of the group i didn't really fit in. Cause i didn't smoke and i didn't wear the most fancy chlose. Anyway we were 4 girls and one of them was really dominant and obsessive and controlling over me she had the Power to make me feel like Shit whenever others were around us. I think she feard that i could take her shine away one day that's why she was so mean to me when others been around us. She new my flaws and picked on me all the time when i was about to make new friends and try to distance myself from her. I was not aloud to talk to others whitout telling her, i was not aloud to pluck my eyebrows or wear make up cause she didn't want me to look prettier than her. Once i plucked my eyebrows and had mascara on she did make fun of me infront of all the girls outside the school and made me look like i was stupid and ugly but luckly one of the girls told her to shut up and told me that i looked great so she saved me in that moment. Also with 12 she forced me to smoke with her cause she didn't want to smoke alone it was her first time Smoking i told her i can't smoke i have asthma and that i didn't like to smoke either way but she forced me to smoke that one cirgarette with her.. and with 13 she interdruced me to Shoplifting we did it for awhile till we got cought. Then when when we were about 15 or 16 she forced me to go on a diat with her cause she didn't want to do it alone. So that was the beginning of a rollercoster my eating disorder had just began.. i say this today i'm in my 30's but when i still think back when i was a Teenager i get shiver all over my body i hated those years i hated myself for not standing up for myself and for not being brave enough to quit that toxic friendship sooner.. i never wanted to be the popular girl in highschool i only cared about my grades and to do my homework. I just happend to be in those popular girl group.. it only demaged me, it took away my selfesteam and got me sever depression through my whole Adulthood....
