I've watched your introduction to Sundials, brilliantly produced, I'm currently enjoying this series which again, is filled with info that is easily understood, thankyou.

You COULD add 2 gnomon [height] sized pieces on each end of the sundial, standing up just like the gnomon is. This will add sunrise (6am) and sunset (6pm) to your dial. The shadow from the style will be cast perfectly horizontal and land right on the top edge of either side at those times. That being said, you can make this dial half as wide by doing away with the center gnomon and using the end pieces themselves as your gnomons. You just have to switch which of the 2 shadows you are using at solar noon, as the morning shadow will no longer fall on the face of the dial after solar noon, and before solar noon, the afternoon shadow will not fall on the face of the dial. Noon will now be on both ends of the face and the morning and afternoon hours will overlap each other.

This dial, particularly thre 10 hour time frame, is usefulin tracking|keeping a record of growth. T Hen and NOW.

Excellent video. Thank you. I did not know of this style of sundial.

I made a sundial from an old directv dish. Your videos were a big help. But i have a couple questions. Like what kind of sundial did i make? It's Just a dish with a pole in the middle. The pole makes no shadow at the equinoxes. What kinda dial is that?

Hello, really informative video, super clear and beautifully simple design of the sundial. I have a question, for the southern hemisphere, the south part of the gnomon would be high and north the lowest point? or is it inclined like yours?

Thanks for the comment. In the southern hemisphere you would simply point the dial south instead of north and relabel the compass points accordingly. My apologies for not addressing the southern hemisphere!

@@rogerdignard5438 Thanks for the answer, usually there is no info on the southern hemisphere. So just to be sure, angle is measured the same way as yours, with the north part higher and by pointing you mean true south?

I was thinking more about your first question. You are correct ifn using this sample sundial in the southern hemisphere the north part of the gnomon would be down and the south end up. The hour markings and the compass orientation would then be correct. You would incline the dial equal your latitude and pointing it due south. The text on this sample dial would then be upside down but if you build your own you would reverse that. I didn't anticipate a southern hemisphere reader :) thanks

@@rogerdignard5438 Thank you so much Roger, this was super helpful, and no one anticipates a southern hemisphere situation except for horizontal sundials. Love the simplicity of your videos and designs, can't wait for more :)

Very interesting. I just ordered a knock off version($18 vs. $3,025)of "The art of dialling" by S. Foster, Leybourn's concepts are compared, "paragraph by paragraph" and, in hopes of learning how to use it, a sex+ant.
