UPDATE: I mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial that they hadn't put out a download of the latest version of GIMP for MAC users.. They have since released a MAC download! Just visit the GIMP downloads page in the video description.

A hint about transparency is given at 10:48 time. Note that only certain file formats support transparency (alpha channel). GIF and PNG are two I know for sure do. JPG does not.

Thank You. For years I've been researching and figured out things as I went. I wish I would have watched a video like this a few years ago. Some of the things you show I knew how to do, but there are many things I had no idea what these items did. This will help me a great deal. It helped me with a couple problems I was having with a current project I'm working on. Again, I wish I would have watched this video a long time ago. I will continue to watch more videos. I will watch the layer one and 5 things you didn't know Gimp could do. Thanks again. Bye the way I have watched your videos in the past and they were helpful; which led me to this video. It's my fault I didn't really watch a long "intro" video. LoL.

Wow, thank you so much. I used to use a super simple program called Digital Image Pro and loved it. It was so easy and did what editing I would ever need. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with Win10. GIMP is way more than I'll ever use and I was overwhelmed after downloading it today. Finding your video gave me hope I may be able to figure out some basic editing again. I like to add text and clone areas out of various shots-- a beautiful shot of the Columbia River just loses something with a garbage can in the foreground - LOL. Now to find a jukebox program to replace MusicMatch would be great and I could get rid of my Win7 computer once and for all.
    Cheers and thanks again.

I have had GIMP sitting in my computer for a long time, but never really used it except to color correct a photo once and awhile. I knew the program had great potential and this video has opened the door to the hallway of fully understanding it's full capabilities and potential. Thank You !! And yes I have hit the subscribe button and the bell.

I just updated from a older version and wanted to have my tool box in the same "order" as my old version. (About 2 versions behind). I have the Legacy pic, but wanted to have each tool set as my old one. Old habit. I tried to drag them around, but unable. Your video is close to what mine was, but not my new Legacy. I enjoyed this video and you are probably the most knowledgable when it comes to GIMP. Thanks and I will go through all your vids.

Hi, I've been doing a computer course and opted for extra modules one of which was image editing using gimp. They provide tutorials and such and I've spent 3 weeks just bypassing this module and going for the others as I couldn't seem to take it in accordingly and when trying to do pre-test it showed! So I decided today to search for a tutorial. So far i'm 45 mins in and have completed a few tasks on my little pre-test with no issues! Delighted for people like you who help people like me who cant really learn via reading information. Very well explained and so detailed but not dull and boring. You are my saviour! Real exam on friday!!! :D haha ill be grannnnndddddd :D:D

REALLY good tutorial. I just upgraded from 2.8 and was pretty freaked out by the interface at first - everything was dark and all the icons were grey so I was really glad that you addressed the preferences right out of the gate. I also learned a ton of little navigating tricks that I was not aware of.

I had a quick and dirty job to do, combining some high res pictures for technical documentation, and wanted to do it with GIMP which I have never used before.
After taking shortcuts and using GIMP blindly (I do know what zoom, crop, scale and rotate are , so what could possibly go wrong ;-)), few hours later I was still at beginning, only more frustrated. I did realize I was missing some basic concepts understanding (mostly related to layers and background settings) so I took few short video tutorials, read some documents, but nothing paid off until I have found your video, took time and watched it. It was the focus on basics and the fact that you did not try to push everything into single short video that made me believe this would be two hours well spent. Actually it took me more than two hours as I was trying some operations while rewinding your tutorial as necessary.
I am not doing much image editing, but your channel would be first place to visit if I needed refreshers or more advanced concepts. Subscribed.

I’m a beginner but I’m into car photography, I don’t have a DSLR camera because I can’t afford one but I have a Point & Shoot. I’ve always used mobile editing apps such as Adobe Photoshop Express and Snapseed but I want to get a little more better, I went ahead and downloaded GIMP on my laptop because I heard it’s probably the best alternative to Adobe Photoshop. Sure was a long video but I have a better general idea

Very helpful. Thanks for all the time you spent. I've never believed it is that easy to edit images... Not that I became an expert, but now I have the basic idea of many things that can be done :)

This was very helpful; thanks! The wall of words style gives me aural fatigue, though. Comprehension is facilitated when you allow for a couple seconds occasionally to take a breath.

I've never used GIMP but now I know how to do the basic stuff.
One question: Can I use the Move Tool to move only a selection? I have two squares in the same layer and I want to adjust the position of one of them. The only way to move only one was to cut and paste it into a new layer, then I can move the two layers/squares separately. Maybe that's really the right way: send the object to a new layer, and then move.

Davies, Wow. You give a great instructional video. Not everyone can explain or teach complicated subjects in a simple to understand way. Also, I will mention I am using a MAC and the new Gimp 2.10 for Mac with no problems.

Thank you so much for this. My only suggestion to make it better is to make your cursor being enough to follow given that you just say things like "right over here" but don't often say where you are on the screen., then bingo it is done and I had no idea where you found that button.
Great tutorial, thanks for doing it!

Thank you so much Davies for putting so much together in one tutorial for a beginner to get started and to provide necessary links for more elaborate explanations! You've done such a brilliant job! I'm planning to use GIMP to design the cover of my book which is about to be published soon... Keep up your good work! You are great help to so many folks...

    Very useful video. Thank you!
Constructive criticism: Repetitive words and phrases do not help to keep audience attention, they have a negative effect on your delivery.
"go ahead and." Count! Now try to achieve a video with zero count. Believe me, people will listen more to what you say.
It's an old secret that used to be taught by those in the know, but nowdays, even public speakers don't know it.
And thanks again for the content. I am slowly increasing my GIMP usage beyond basic levels and curves, and this video helped a lot.
