"Cut for Time" was great show. Sadly, the network never aired it because all their time slots were full. I got to see the pilot because I worked at a video tape recycling facility.
Kyle Mooney has such perfect Albert Brooks vibes. Offbeat, relatable, and inspired. Don't know how much he writes his own material but it always feels as though he fits his characters too perfectly
@@WillyNillyandSilly Albert Brooks is a good point of reference. It’s often cringe worthy but it’s always sweet as opposed to cringe worthy and cruel. He’s like a Robert Altman for millennials. It’s also consistent with a lot of the stuff that he did with Beck Bennett years ago. This is very much in keeping with all of those parodies of 90s sitcoms and music videos he’s done. His well of nostalgia is narrow but runs very deep.

This was very interesting - meta on meta. I'm glad Kyle is still trying these types of pieces. It tells you how much the idea of him being cut for time has stuck, because he has been in a lot of sketches this season, including some big lead roles, but he still knows many will see him as the guy who doesn't get on. My favorite part of this was his talking about buying real drugs and the drug dealers approaching a disturbed Jake.

I think Kyle is just the inside joke between Lorne and his friends, where he hires someone really talented to be an SNL outcast and then cuts all their sketches to keep the bit running.
Kyle and Beck have a pre-SNL video where Kyle is singing “Superstition” badly while doling chores and Beck (the talent scout) tries to sign Kyle to a recording contract. One of my favorites. Definitely worth watching. The whole cast brings something to the table with a lot of innovative talent.

This sketch made me feel… something? The satire is spread so thin here, but Donnie Dorko was hilarious, as were Mikey and the drug dealers. However, this is the fist sketch I’ve ever seen broadcasted on SNL that did not actually balance the “too real” moments with a strong enough punchline to take the sting out. I’m not sure if I’m ready for double decker meta comedy on a regular basis, but I’m really glad Kyle got to make this sketch. I’m just wondering if it ultimately being cut for time was irony or intentional!
To be fair though, I actually WOULD like to see some weekly lil segments with some of the back stage crew, writer's room, other behind the scenes/uncredited people bits!
