This video was very helpful and it helped me pass, but here are some more tips that I think are important in making sure you pass. (I failed 2x and these were the things I changed the third time around)
•The most important thing is word count. If you only write 300 words your going to fail so make sure you write 450+ words!!
• it’s graded by a computer. The program is looking at your writing style and not the content in your paper.
•do not have short sentences. Have at least 15 words per sentence.
•Avoid First-person phrases like, “In my opinion” or “I believe”
If you take mine + Mr. Tooheys tips you’ll pass with a high score!
Thanks for your insights, Key! I agree with you about the computer grading your writing style for sure… but if you actually have something to say, your style is almost guaranteed to be better than hundreds of words of nonsense, so don’t ignore the content of your essay! That being said, we’ll done on passing (and not giving up!) and thank you for sharing your valuable insights!!
@@MichaelToohey oh yes of course! i agree 100%, I should have made that clear. I wanted to get as close to 600 words as possible so I applied that tip when I was finished with my essay but I was still a couple hundred words away for 600. So I just added on to my body paragraphs by rewording what I already said, which I would not normally do this if a person was reading the essay but since it was a computer it didn’t seem to matter.
But thanks for the support and I’ll definitely be buying your math course when I have to take that portion of the TSI. I think it’ll definitely help me pass it the first time around 🤞🏻

Hello Mr. Toohey 👋. I took the TSIA2 today for the second time and I passed the Essay portion with a 6. Thank you for your writing style, I followed it and I was successful 🙏🏽. As for the math portion I failed it it for the second time with a 935 😞 I got registered today for a developmental class in Math (5 weeks long) I’ll just take this route with the Math 😁 🤷♀️ THANK YOU! 🙏🏽

I took the tsi on on Tuesday, i passed the english and writing part, i did ok on the math, but i did very bad on the essay. I never really knew how to properly construct a essay and i was stressing out because i needed that essay part to be on the “college ready” side of the tsi scale so i can take the classes i needed for my major. I’ve taken the tsi recently,I passed the English,writing,and math section relatively easily but I’ve gotten a 4 on the essay portion of the test every time I have attempted it

I took the TSI last week unfortunately I was off on the essay by one point and the writing by two problems. Did well on the math. I am retaking it tomorrow and the question for the essay part it was something about money and time and how we value we one differently and why. It was so deep, did not expect it. Hopefully I pass! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is the most helpful video by far! I was writing my essay and had an outline and everything done well including thesis but decided last minute to change it all and wrote a completely different side of the question for the essay.

I have a question, with this prompt are you allowed to play both sides while writing the essay? Or do you have to pick a side and base your reasoning on it?
You definitely want to address BOTH sides of the argument in your essay… but whichever side you believe is more persuasive, pick that side to be your argument and make the other side your counterargument. I recommend structuring it using the formula that appears in the video…

I took my tsi again today. This was my 4th attempt. I successfully passed the essay part with a 5. I am so happy and thank you for making this video and the TSI essay formula sheet helped me a lot. When I wrote my essay this time, I didn't create any new category like theoretical skills. I used the same exact style of writing given in the formula sheet. My topic was is our ability to change ourselves unlimited or our abilities are limited to make important changes in our lives. My argument was the ability to change ourselves are unlimited and after submitting the essay, I was really happy. Once again thank you very very very much for making this video and showing an example of a prompt with a student using the formula sheet. I don't know how to explain my happiness to you. I was very sad when I didn't pass my essay last time and I gave up on my tsi and started practicing for my SAT. But my parents encouraged me to take it again for one last time and I successfully passed it today. I will surely recommend your video to my friends who is going to take TSI ELAR from now on and for my friends who failed the essay part of the TSI. Once again thank you so much. I also would like to see more videos of your tips and tricks for passing SAT Reading and Writing Section. Thank you very much.

I don’t think you have to… In any case, I can’t imagine that affecting your score, having spaces or not…
Mr Toohey, this is awesome but I do have a question. I’m under the impression that you are supposed to choose one side strongly and one side only.
Isn’t saying something like “It is true that (counterargument)” basically acknowledging that you believe the opposing side is also correct? Basically, the entire second paragraph in your formula is a bit confusing, since it seems like that entire paragraph is taking side with the counterargument
Yes, that’s exactly what you should do in an essay like this. Consider BOTH sides of the argument…
Think about it this way: In a disagreement between two friends, what are the chances that one friend is 100% right and the other 0% right?
Don’t get me wrong: one friend is probably closer to the truth… but you can find valid points even among people you generally disagree with, can’t you?
Your argument is like the friend you side with. You think that side is more persuasive.
The counterargument is your other friend, who you still appreciate even though you find the first one more persuasive.
Make any sense?

I first took the essay about 2 months ago and got a 4, I had used the formula my teachers wanted and included a counter argument. I think what happened is that I hadn’t put enough words? I was around like 310 words
The requirement is 300-600 words, so a 310 word essay shouldn’t be a problem as long as it directly addresses the prompt and both sides of the argument… just organize your ideas, follow my formula, and you’ll be great!
Yes words area big issue due to a computer grading it atleast write 450 or more words on my previous ones i wrote only 310 and 330 the one i got a 6 on had 498 words also make sure ur grammar is correct and make ur thesis and response to it clear

I am taking my TSI exam this coming Friday. This is my fourth time. I didn't pass the reading section the first time and I didn't pass the essay section the other two times. I used all your tips and the style that you have said in the video. But still, I didn't pass my essay. Are there any tips or tricks that you could suggest?

Is the writeplacer same as the TSI essay? Especially with regards to the mention of both sides of the argument. I have heard that you're supposed to be a staunch supporter of the side you choose and should refer the counter argument at the end. Is that true? Would be a pleasure if you could shed some light on that?
Yes!!! It’s actually the exact same prompt for the TSI and the writeplacer!! You definitely want to refer to both sides of the argument… just follow my formula in my TSI Essay Practice video and you will be on the right track… but you’ve got to address BOTH sides of the argument to do it properly! Just choose the side that you think is more compelling (persuasive) and make that your main argument!! Make sense?

I cant thank you much you covered every topics. i got 5 in Essay and i am happy with that because i barely did any practice. All magic is of your Essay Template. it made Essay planing and structuring very very easy, i just wrote my thoughts and essay was ready. (My essay prompt was: do people get successful because of Luck or people get successful with hard work). i passed my tsi with a 7 due to limited support of ideas, how can i support my ideas and recieve a score of 8 on the writing portion?
That’s a great question! Just make sure that for your argument and counterargument, you have as much good evidence to support your ideas as possible. Not sure how many pieces of evidence you need exactly to get an 8 but I recommend at least 4 pieces of good evidence in each body paragraph to get the highest possible score…
Hello Mr. Toohey! This is my first time writing messages to you and also preparing for my TSI exam. I'm an international student who is trying to get into college in August. I would like to ask a question about the essay. While I was practicing the TSI with the book called 'TSI study guide 2023~2024 6th Edition', I realized that there were some different types of essay questions. To be specific, the question and the passage were a lot different than the essay in this video. For example, the essay in this video requires me to make one choice and write down reasons to support my opinion. However, in my book, there was a passage about 'parents making troubles while watching their kids' game'. And there were three questions. Question 1 was to analyze and evaluate the passage. Question number 2 was to develop my own perspective. And the final question was to explain the relationship between my perspective and the given passage. I was so surprised when I saw this different type of essay question. So I'm now feeling that I'm kind of lost. It will be an honor if you can give me some advice. And I also want to thank you for sharing all of your TSI education videos. It helped me a lot!

The format of the essay you see in my videos is for the most recent version of the TSI, the TSIA2 test… I have no idea why they’re structuring the questions the way you describe in the comments above… I’ve seen a lot of 3rd party prep materials that simply aren’t very good, so it could be that simple… the essay formula I provide in the video is helping recent students pass the essay portion (check the comments and see for yourself!) so of course, I recommend following my formula instead… I haven’t heard from any students about changes to the TSI essay, but I’ll let you (and everyone else!) know if there are important updates… Hope that helps!

I was studying this way of doing the essay for abt a month but today the advisor told me it needs to be 5 paragraphs introduction, 3 body paragraph and conclusion

Absolutely does not have to be in that format. Some counselors/teachers suggest that because some students are more familiar with that format, but the TSI Essay lends itself better to the counterargument/argument format that appears in the video.

Hi Mr. Toohey! Quick question!! Are we allowed to write “stuff” in our essays as Francisco wrote? I personally feel that we are not allowed to write to be, say in a more professional sense as this is the TSI, but I’m not so sure. Please let me know when you can! Thank you sir for your hard work :)
Great question!! I personally wouldn’t recommend using the words “stuff” or “things” if you can use a more precise term for those things… I mean, words.

Hello Mr.Toohey, I have my English and essay test tommorow, and I am super stressed. My teacher keeps telling us that we must have developed ideas. Most of the samples essays have dates and events so I am worried that I won't be able to develop examples and simultaneously stay on topic since the computer will be grading it. Are there are tips that you have to tie back to a thesis? Also great video :)
Yes! Just follow the formula that appears in the video and you will be in good shape! Make sure to organize all of your ideas first (just like you see in the video) and the thesis writes itself as long as you follow the formula… best of luck on the test tomorrow!

I just want to know how much time I can take for TSI ELAR.
Great question! There is no time limit on the TSI ELAR test!
there should be a time limit for every exam right. Is it around 3-5 hours? I searched up on google and that's what I got. The last time when I wrote TSI I took around nine hours to complete it.I used all your methods for the essay, and still I only got a 4 and I need a 5 to pass the essay. I think time was a factor and that's why I failed the essay part. I am taking the essay again tomorrow. I also want to know whether learning the tips to write an SAT essay would help TSI?
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t pass last time! You’re right, the only time limit should be as long as the testing center is open… I’m not as familiar with the SAT essay, so I’m not sure how helpful studying that would be… there are a couple other TSI essay prompts available online (I include two more prompts for practice in my TSI ELAR course), I would practice those if you haven’t yet already…
But you’re so close! Only one point away! Keep practicing and give it your best shot next time!
I saw your video last time and wrote the tsi but still, I got a 4 for the essay part. But I think even I've made some mistakes and I would like to clarify them with you. So last time I got a topic called do people emphasize too much on learning practical skills? So I wrote my first sentence as some people emphasize too much on learning practical skills. Other people emphasize too much on learning theoretical skills. Is this way right? The word theoretical is something that I made. The passage doesn't have this word at all. I saw the example you showed in the video but that topic had two parts. The topic that I got only had one side so that's why I made another as theoretical skills. I would also like to know which part in the tsi is the diagnostics?

I took the tsi about a year ago and I’m planning on taking it again and I came across this same video I studied the format and everything and I got a 4 the reasoning was because It said it was repetitive with transitions and other things so use this format wisely but the thought process was good they also made it to where you have to get a 5 on the writing so with using this format I failed when if I could have just done it on my own it could have been so much better

I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling to pass! Do you feel like you understood the essay prompts pretty well, or were they a little confusing?
I took the test I had four paragraphs and used your method included argument and counter argument. I failed with a 4. Do we have the option to only use one side of the argument and provide examples as our middle paragraphs? If that’s easier for us? Also I can’t find a direct answer for how many paragraphs we are supposed to have. I’m take the TSI ELAR essay portion. Is that the same test you are reviewing?
I’m so sorry to hear you didn’t pass, but you’re so close! You are free to write in any format you like, I just believe that the counterargument/argument format will give most students something substantive to say that will directly address the question… there is no paragraph requirement (only a word-count requirement), but keep in mind that you are graded for grammar/sentence structure as well, so I would practice writing a bit more on your own with a grammar/spell-check app like Google Docs to see what you need to fix in your writing… that alone might be enough to get you to a passing score!
And yes, the essay that appears in the video is a TSI essay from and official released TSI practice test…

I have a question, whenever I look it up it says the tsi essay should be five paragraphs, but in yours there is only four. Can you just do four? I’m so confused 🤦♂️
4 is just fine (and allows you do do an introduction, argument, counter argument, and conclusion)! There is a word count requirement, but no paragraph number requirement…
