    I just wanted to add my two cents about the Rhetorical Synthesis questions. The strategy discussed in the video does save a lot of time. However, the College Board has started adding false information into the answer choices to bait you into selecting them without reading the actual notes in their practice tests. I have a feeling they might include these trick questions in the August 2024 test, so beware.

    You are the only one who doesnt yap fr. I watched several videos, but every single one repeated some bullshit, thinking motivating is good for this people. Students need some tips, not motivation. When you give them motivation and they think they're enough with some ridiculous hardwork, they're gonna dissappoint after their score. This video is what we needed. I practice myself to learn this tips on my own. It was a waste of time I guess. Thank you for making this video. You helped so many people with this incredible content.

    Last : 2 passage

      The idea is to start with your strengths so you can get through questions faster without getting stuck. This approach is especially helpful if you struggle with running out of time, as it allows you to complete more questions. Since all questions are worth the same points, starting with your strengths ensures you maximize your score within the time limit. However, if time isn’t an issue for you, it doesn’t matter as much. Does this make sense?

    Thanks for the advice. Could you address the questions that have a piece of text with an underlined sentence, and then asks what does the underlined text contribute to the structure of the whole text? And also the newer poetry questions?

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  21 день назад +1

      Yes! The function of the underlined section question type is a part of the broader purpose questions, so many of the things I said in that section apply here. The strategy I use is to read the text as a whole, then go back to the underlined part and ask myself what insight it gave me. I'll come up with an original answer before looking at the answer choices, then I'll pick the one that best matches with my prediction. There aren't too many questions on poetry, but I'll give you what I know. The best thing you can do is focus on the goal of the question (is it asking for main idea, purpose, or detail?), and hone in on your strategies with those question types. For example, if it was asking for the main idea, I would try my best to translate the poem into a way I can understand. I would then use this translation against the answer choices. Of course the hardest part is the translating. In my community I member named Amani Alzhori posted a list of poetry words you may find helpful:
      Thou: You (subject)
      Thee: you (object, singular)
      Ye: You (object, plural)
      Thy: Your
      Thuself: Yourself
      Dost: do
      Doth: does
      ‘Ere: before
      Hast: have
      ‘Tis: it is
      ‘Twas: it was
      Wast: were
      Whence: from where
      Wherefore: why
      Hence: from here
      Oft: often
      Yea: even
      Aught: anything
      Nay: no
      Ay: yes
      art : are

    Hi man, these strategies definitely worked for me, but my main issue is that even though I get every answer in module 1 correct, when it comes to the second module, I cant use my time effectively and thereby drop to scores around the 650 range, with the large part of my errors stemming from my lack of time management. Any tips on how I can rectify this issue? Exam is next week btw so Im extremely nervous about this issue

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  24 дня назад +1

      I recommend starting with your strengths so you can solidify as many points just in case you run out of time. For improving time management, I try to only look for what the question needs. For example, if the question asks for the overall structure of the text, I'm not going to be paying attention to tiny details like people's names. Also, I don't read every word in my head. Instead, I scan the text without pronouncing the words in my head (this is known as speed-reading). Finally, I look for patterns in each question that I can use to shortcut me to the answer. This pattern recognition is especially present in grammar related questions. An example of this might be recognizing that all the answer choices are verbs, then immediately searching for the context of the verb to complete the question without wasting time deciding the next course of action.

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  Месяц назад +2

      Thanks! Yes, I have some tips for you. Start with your strengths-questions you can answer quickly and accurately-so you can get through more of the test within the time limit. For example, I found the "Information and Ideas" (long passage questions) took me the longest, so I’d skip ahead to the grammar questions. This way, if I ran out of time, the hardest questions were the ones I didn’t finish, and I maximized the number of questions I answered.
      Since every question is worth the same, this strategy can help boost your score. Ideally, you want to complete EVERY question, and two key strategies for this are speed reading and pattern recognition. Speed reading involves scanning the text to quickly grasp the main points without subvocalizing (speaking the words in your head), which takes practice. Pattern recognition, especially for grammar questions, allows you to identify what to look for and answer in just 10-30 seconds.
      For a more mathematical approach, there are 27 questions in 32 minutes, giving you about 71 seconds per question. Setting a timer and practicing within this limit can improve your pacing. I also mentioned in the video how the flag tool and clock can help manage your time effectively. Let if this makes sense

    This is so helpful! I last scored a 710 on practice test 2, but after watching this I got a 750 on practice test 5! Also, what degree of variance is there in the difficulty of the practice tests? How much should a score waiver by across tests?

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  18 дней назад

      That's great! I don't think a score will waver TOO much between practice tests. While it is possible that a jump from 710 to 750 is just a fluke, I think it's unlikely. I've heard stories of huge variance in others, but not much in myself.

      I think the biggest factor is to ruthlessly target your weaknesses. You can do this by reviewing your practice tests, analyzing the explanations, and even creating a notebook where you write your mistakes and why you got the question wrong. You can also target specific weaknesses with the SAT question bank or Khan Academy quizzes.

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  19 дней назад

      I think you're asking what an independent vs dependent clause is? Correct me if that's not what you meant. If it is, an independent clause is a complete thought (Example: I made a RUclips video about the SAT.) Two independent thoughts must be separated with a period, semicolon, or a comma followed of any of the FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). Dependent clauses are not complete thoughts that cannot stand alone, and they need to be connected to an independent clause in order to be a complete sentence (Example: After I studied for the SAT,). If you don't knowing what these are, you won't be able to connect thoughts with correct grammar. If this doesn't make sense let me know.

    i don't understand the statement and restatement in the first , can you explain it please?

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  19 дней назад

      The only way a words in context question can be answered is if there's enough context to make an educated guess of what the word could be. The SAT often puts this context in a repeatable format. They have a statement, describing something, then they repeat the same idea again (restatement). In order for you to figure out what the word in the blank is, you have to find the synonym in the other statement. If the statements were all original, then it would be close to impossible to guess what the word might be. Since the SAT is objective, they have to input a synonym somewhere else in the text that pairs with the word in context. Does this clear things up?

    Thank you for this video. I’ve been getting low 700s for my mocks now (got 710 in June, want to improve to retaking) and every time I would make a mistake that was silly (like not reading the full answer or grammar). This video will help me get a high 700 this month. Any tips on how to stay focused through the test and make sure to make no silly mistakes?

    • @DylanShaughnessySAT
      @DylanShaughnessySAT  Месяц назад +3

      Wow, 710 is awesome! For avoiding silly mistakes, I found it helpful to keep a notebook dedicated to them. Writing things down by hand requires more effort than typing, which reinforces the lesson, so I recommend using a physical notebook instead of a Google Doc. Here’s what I did: I noted the type of question, the mistake I made, and how I would avoid it in the future. You might notice that most of your mistakes stem from a few gaps in understanding or common issues like reading too quickly. As for staying focused, do whatever you can to stay alert before the exam-get good sleep, chew gum, take a cold shower, or review a few practice questions to warm up. Good luck with your goal!

      Transition words help clarify the relationship between ideas in the text, guiding the reader through the author's thought process. This can be helpful in purpose questions because understanding these connections reveals what the author is trying to convey, making it easier to determine the overall purpose or message of the passage.
