Great or garbage?!
Also, if you like all those clean chords I'm playing check out "Self Censored" by Ragdoll
ragdollrock.bandcamp.com/track/self-censored
Great brother.. 🤘
@LeonTodd I say good to great. Rush and Bryan Adams was a great way to start off the demonstration/review. HA!!!! I got ready to start singing "Run To You" and you pulled the carpet out from under me! "D"
Slightly off subject...but "Self Censored" has been a favorite of mine for a while now. It's the song I use for chilling and getting my mind cleared...finding something good in the mess of things. Actually, kind of an important song for me.
The late Alexi Laiho always had the Boss CH-1 ''ON'' before boost (20db in his guitars) --- Added fat on dropped tunings Metal rhythm. Settings were: all buttons at 11 o'clock. He took that trick from Zakk Wylde (signature MXR Chorus ZW-38). If these are good enough for these guitar wizards...
Great, for sure.
Fun fact: the CH-1 is the fourth installment in the Boss compact chorus series, released in 1989 after the CE-3 (1982) and before the CE-5 (1991). However, the reason the pedal isn't called the CE-4 is because in Japanese (and Chinese), the word for "four" sounds like the word for "death" and is therefore unlucky. If you look back through the timeline of Boss products you'll notice that there are very few Boss pedals with the number 4 in their name.
*fourth if you count the Roland CE-1 as being the first
I think the rare PQ4 is one of the few exceptions to that rule!
@@phantasmagora6542of course that counts but I guess third compact
Idk why they’re so superstitious also I’ve seen elevators with a 13th floor
There is no need for hyper expensive boutique bullshit. This does it. For years. Thanks.
Excellent review! Thanks for the content and suggestions on use for this pedal!
I recall getting my CH-1 back in 1991 along with a Metal Zone for X-mas. Quickly ditched the MT-2 but kept the CH-1. Still have it today. Its the one pedal i've consistently used throughout my guitar playing journey.
This pedal was part of my three pedal fly rig for a few years. Its a wonderful chorus and served me so well.
Whats another two?
This sounded so good that I just bought one over the weekend.
Honestly I think this is the best sounding chorus I've ever heard. It's just the right amount of subtle with this rich and beautiful flavor.
It's a great pedal to have for when I need something with the flavor of my BF3 Flanger but not as strong.
Enjoy!
LT great videos - loving all of the chorus demos lately (esp the Tricerachorus)!
it's interesting how you need to run the Effect Level at 100% to achieve the sounds even in mono.
In stereo, the dry/effected signals are not totally "balanced" even at 100% output. The EQ definitely effects how "wide" the sound esp with headphones.
I have a CE-5 and it sounds identical.
I JUST incorporated mine back into my rig in the FX loop. It’s great! May change it eventually again but I’m digging it!
I love that slight flange sound you get with these, I've been using the spark go and one of the chorus pedals is apparently modelled on this, I need to get one
Brian, love your voice, one of the best in rock n roll.
Fun. I used this pedal gigging SoCal in the early 90s. My sound got way more compliments than my playing hahaha
Good stuff man :^)
Great video, Leon! The CH-1 was my first chorus, purchased used in 1995 or '96. I was deep in my Nirvana phase and wanted to get a chorus pedal, and I bought this thinking all chorus pedals were the same. At the time, I was after that warm, syrupy, thick chorus that you get from the Small Clone, Dimension, etc. The CH-1 was too cold and not dramatic enough. I've since grown up and realized that chorus comes a lot of different flavors, so it sounds better to my ears now :) I still prefer deeper/warmer chorus sounds, though.
Thanks Ryan for leaning that so we can hear it kind sir!
I thought it sounds great, but I really like Chorus to thicken up my tone.
I used to always play with chorus almost always on but just barely. Just to give the illusion that the guitar is much bigger than it is. Even with lead and delay and reverb. ♥️🤘
Be safe and well my brother. ♥️🤘♥️
Ah, reminds me of the '80s & '90s. Beautiful!
Interesting review… made me realize i had a ch1 in my unused stuff. Checked for S/N appears to be an analog version… mint pedal, near mint box and contents. Just bought and forgot 🤦🏻♂️ can’t wait to try it.
I have an analog version CH-1 that has been my chorus sound on guitar for years and I been using an analog version CEB-3 on bass for decades! I love them both. 😍
I'll always take the CE-5 over this. I prefer the controls and it seems to handle hotter inputs better, hence why it also works better on bass
my very first guitar pedal was a ch1. loved it. later when id collected more pedals and had a board,, i noted how much better my tone was without the ch1 in the chain. so i sold it.
Damn. I had one of those pedals in like 94
Great chorus pedal!
Very good chorus.. In satriani pedalboard from years
Sounds great in stereo!
I have this pedal and if spend some time with it, it's really, really good. Keep the rate down, eq up, volume up, and depth around 2-3, it will give you the
Eddie chorus sound (close anyway). Run it in mono.
Love mine … I bought-it in 2006 and my small clone has been in a box ever since.
You be had one for years. Usually run level all the way up, tone straight up, rate at 1:00, depth all the way up……use that like a unicorn type sound for chorus washed cleans…. Not the best for distorted tones (IMO)…..but really dig that underwater type setting for cleans.
My second pedal, bought in 89 or 90. Let a guy I knew borrow it in the 00s and lost track of him.
My recollection was it sounded very crystalline, etched, “cool” rather than “warm.” If one fell back into my life, I’d give it a go, but I’m not missing it just on the memory.
i had the ch1 blue label 1989, i was using it in the blackstar ht20 effects loop. I liked the color he gave the tone. it's a nice chorus and never too intrusive, I used it together with the boss dd2.
however, to make it sound wet / dry you need two amps, and in the end between cables connectors and power supplies it becomes a bit boring. that's why I switch to the fractal. you have it all in there and you play directly in stereo and you can recreate all the 80s / 90s aor and hair metal tones with convenience, comfort and without connecting too much stuff.
My ears are hearing "great." After reading thru a few of the comments and their thoughts on the pedal, it may have as much to do with your playing with the sounds/tones I hear. Nicely Done!
The first version of the CH-1 (Japan) used a MN3101\MN3007 and the second version (Taiwan) used a digital echo IC. The Japanese one is analog. The Japanese circuit is near identical to a CE-2 but with the added Effect Level And EQ controls. From what I remember, when I test built the Taiwan version on breadboard, I was able to direct swap the IC with a PT2398 IC (very cheap digital echo chip found in some Karaoke Machines). I decided not to build the Taiwan version as it did not sound good enough to me compared to the CE-2 MN3101\MN3007 I have built. :)
I've got this pedal and I dig it out from time to time. The stereo functionality is cool and I've used it to split a mono signal into two channels when recording (where a chorus effect is appropriate). Although it's an analogue chorus (mine is at least, I believe they shifted to digital for this model 15-20 years ago) I found it pretty challenging to dial in a CE-2-style tone, perhaps because the controls on the CE-2 have less range than the CH-1 so it's more difficult to dial into any specific CE-2 sweet spot. On the whole, I have a flanger (EHX Neo Mistress) on my main board - make of that what you will.
Yeah the Japanese version is the classic analog MN3101\MN3007 and the later Taiwan version uses a digital echo IC (same pinout as a PT2398).
Love this pedal! Heck, even Peter Steele from Type O Negative used it on his bass rig.
RIP Pete!
I have the digital Version and sadly mine has the tendency to distort with louder input signals. It also seems to lack a bit of depth compared to the one in the video. The EQ knob also doesn't really do that much on my unit. One cool trick is to just use the A output and a patchcable into Output B. That way the pedal behaves like a vibrato effect.
Pre 2001 is analogue. Same with the CE5.
Great in the loop as well with the mix control at 50/50.
Used one for years to make guitar sound wider for a 3 piece.
It’s based on the CE circuit but with emphasis on the high end. Bit like the Boss HF compared to the BF.
My 2nd pedal I ever bought, found some guy selling his guitar stuff at my local flea market about 10 or so years ago and bought it on a whim for $20. I've had it and used it ever since. Used to be my favorite effect when I was still in my beginning stages of guitar messing around with line6 spider IV
Score for 20 bucks!
wow this sounded amazing clean and with distortion, no need for delay or reverb just this, sounds great. I'm getting it thanks. what was the distortion used tho?
Axe-Fx
LOVE THE RUSH., IT SOUNDS GREAT!
I just bought one you should work for Boss!
Not a garbage pedal, but definitely has a specific sound. I still have mine from 1989 LOL!!!
That's vintage now!
@@LeonTodd
I think I am at this point, too LOL!
It couldn't possibly be garbage. Zakk Wylde had it, I had it. It sounded like chorus. What I liked about it was how I assume Zakk was using it, like doubling. Worked nicely for that.
Zakk or not its crap
I thought zakk used the ce2?
@@astro2069 No, he used the CH-1, and later, the CE-5. Then he went all Dunlop/MXR.
@@kalebaldwin5398in fact has his own signature MXR chorus
Is there any difference in sound between the analog one and digital one?
What were you playing at the beginning? It sounded like The Damned, 'Smash It Up'.
rush,,,,I M ORDERING IT THIS WEEK
My CH-1 is a black label and was modded by Indyguitarist B Wampler's mod work before his own name company. Got it used and it's all the chorus I need. But my mod pedal has a chorus setting and my C Copy original delay has a mod button that I glued a Lego piece to so I can toe tap that on and off.
Whelp. It’s not a DC2 but it does have nice, usable controls to go places some of the more popular vintage models don’t.
Great or Garbage? It's been around for 3 decades now, I think that answers the question.
Love you Ryan
I have modded ch1. Modest Mike mod. I’m a fan. You rock!
I think if you already had one or can buy a cheap one you'll probably never stop using it for classic chorus tones
I'm surprised you didn't play, "No More Tear." I just read that Wylde used an SD-1 & CH-1 on the recording.
Good demo
I use this pedal and enjoy the tones not my favorite but it gets the Job done sometimes I add a little pitch detune would you put the chorus before or after the pitch detune
I normally go chorus - detune
Dude the TC 3rd dimension is half the price and it does that warm chorus sound perfectly. I've always been after that warm chorus sound. The super bright chorus pedals don't make sense that much.
I've had a few over the years, don't have any right now, I'm a chorus snob. Better than nothing but not my 1st choice. Past FX CE1 gets my vote!
I love this pedal but for some reason it squeals like crazy if I enable a drive or distortion pedal before it..
Super! 😎🤙🏼
Pedal in Demo sounds really noisey to my ear. Is that the pedal or the setup?
Off topic a bit, more often than not I see PRS guitars being used without the truss rod cover, I have an SE Paul's and I'm forever having to adjust the truss rod, to the point that I don't use it much any more! Is that the reason yours is off?
I adjusted the truss rod once and promptly lost the cover :s
Whoops!
Yes I am having the same problem; hot day and cold day and the difference in neck bow is substantial. This is annoying since the pickups are also sensitive to pickup height. Probably another reason why people swap the pickups often.
What’s after Run to You with the shimmering arpeggios? Sounds great! 1:30 - 2:20
Off brand Whitesnake "Is This Love" chords :p There's a Ragdoll song from our first record called Ashamed which uses similar chords
@@LeonTodd Noice! Thank you, love your videos
Just like a few Boss pedals, the analog version sounds way better than the digital. I have compared both!
CE-5 clean, CH-1 dirty. The analog CE-5 sounds great. Sometimes if I am running stereo effects into a Jazz Chorus I use the CE-5 mono.
Great!
Can't find one demo of this pedal using a rotary type sound. Can it do that? Thanks Nice Demo.
If you set the rate and depth around 1-2 o'clock, it does a pretty nice Let it Rain/It Don't Come Easy sound.
Thanks!
I liked the lifeson sound
Best clean chorus ever: Bryan Adams - Run To You
Best crunchy chorus ever: Criss Oliva - Savatage - Hall Of the Mouantain King ( and everything else he used chorus on).
To me the Ibanez Soundtank Suoer Chorus is the true Super Chorus.
it's great!
These are great. Of course, it's BOSS. But it has the same issue the MXR m234 has, mono IN. ;-(
Both pedals sound fantastic no doubt about it.
I won't go so far as to call it garbage, but it does something to the tone (Buzz? Grit?) that I don't care for. It wouldn't be the first pedal I'd reach for, but I guess it has a place.
Are u the owner of all those guitars?
They're great. Certainly not garbage. My favorite ever is the Ibanez SC-10 though.
The SC-10 is an overlooked gem. But unfortunately, as with the rest of the 10 series, its major downfall is the casing/switch.
It doesn't nail the nirvana thing like my old one does.
It's nothing special, yet it still has 'that' sound (which I think all BOSS chorus pedals have in some way). Just a nice, subtle chorus that gets the job done.
^^this.....and I don't even really like modulation effects. When the song calls for it, a CH-1 is either what I grab or try to recreate on the Kemper.
An old trick used was to put a loose (headphone converter) plug into the mono out (A) and then let the signal run through only the B output into the RV-3 or reverb and delay. Great ambient sounds.
Its a Chorus pedal. Very hard for a company to mess up a Chorus effect.
I had it for years, then switched to a CE-2 and I prefer it, maybe a CE-2W would be the perfect choice for the players who want the stereo setup and a CE-1 mode?
Ce2w does the ce1 thing pretty well
It's the only Boss compact Chorus I haven't owned or tried. It sounds good but I'm not sure it does anything that the CE-5 can't. If I saw one cheap I'd give it a go.
I’ve a/b’d them both. It’s nothing like the CE-5 and vice versa.
@@Kevin.Kelly. good to know. 👍
I am with Ryan on meh for bass also and me typically being a bassist in most cases . I do actually have this pedal, it works better for guitar to me. But let's keep it away from me bass... Forthwith.
It’s very soft even dimed
In super chorus more is definitely more
Alot darker of a tone then the CE pedals you did recently. A classic still though. But not as crisp as there CE-1
Analog or digital?
Pretty sure this is an old analog one
@J Slikbeer Who said anything about hearing?
Sounds like the damned cover 80s
I prefer the CH-1 than the CE-5
Hi Leon, I own that pedal and I gotta say I hardly ever use it.
What's your go to chorus?
@@LeonTodd Hi . I just bought one... are made in malaysia?
I don't use chorus much. But have always thought the Super Chorus was a good basic chorus. I only like it on clean guitar for that chorus clean sound though. Definitely not something I would use on a bass tone recording. It still works though for those using pedal boards. I think there are some much better option though now compared to when the CH-1 came out.
Pink label = analogue.
it has a tone suck
All Boss Chorus pedals are great except the Super Chorus, which is weak and boring.
Clean tones, chorus sounds amazing. Distortion with chorus sounds like Plush. And sounds like shit. I absolutely love STP, but I can not stand that song.
Its crap i had one their good for keyboards
The correct answer is: its garbage. Its a chorus pedal.
I dug it @Leon_Todd!!!
Rush fan i see!!!
😍
