I honestly get kinda sad and glad too when I think about the days that I used to play DayZ mod before moving to Standalone in 2014-2018. Sadly the group I used to run with back then no longer gets online anymore. Hell my old buddy Kolton and Bunkakes that I played the mod with all the time.. He ended up winning but you wanna know what he said to me before I respawned? He said bro you wanna meet up and team up with me and my friend (Bunkakes) ? It was at that moment I met two good friends and I said yes. We ended up meeting at the edge of Elektro outskirts in the hills and we all teamed and went looting. We shared a brotherly bonds for the next 4 years but then the Mod became depopulized over the years and Standalone was becoming more and more big and well, we all grew up.. Tiss the way of life. I actually hate saying this but I havn't seen both of my Comrades in arms for over 5 years since 2019 man. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have kept playing DayZ maybe and got into Epoch/Overpoch. I remember the mod being amazing, then the standalone came out and killed it... But the standalone sucked and everyone quit and for whatever reason no one went back to the mod and both died. I still think the mod is better than the standalone today though, it just has gameplay elements that work over the standalone like things spawning in when someone is there or zombies walking slowly in buildings. These weird quirks of the engine that were seen as flaws, but were actually integral to the fun of the game.

The mod definitely had an atmosphere to it, I remember playing for the first time knowing nothing about Arma and it just felt...different. The way I always described it was that it felt like I was playing one of those Cabela's hunting games as a kid, except there's other players to hunt too.
