  • This repair is was done on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee (XJ series) with an NP-231J transfer case.
Please realize that you will definitely need to buy or make the special sleeve-type installation tool, or your new seal will be damaged when you install it.
The Chrysler tool number is 6992. It is extremely difficult to find one. You can make one though.
Look around your scrap-metal pile for an old beach-umbrella pole or something similar, to use to make your own tool. The tool must be tapered at one end. To see what I made, you can jump to 9:17 in the video. I used an aluminum tube that I found in my scrap-metal bin.
Locking oil-filter pliers (for removing the oil slinger), can be found here: amzn.to/45hjCUS
The seal is part number 710663, and can be found here: amzn.to/3PBhx0d
Here is the inch-pound torque wrench that I use (for the u-joint bolts): amzn.to/3tkpmzS

The way a how-to video should be. Very detailed step by step with no BS.

Man. It'd be nice if that inner seal tube was handily available!
Thanks for a great write up!

do I really need that oil slinger or dust cover back on? Like is it really essential??
