Nathan, it is sad but true. Some people look horrible these days. They pay tons of money for jeans (UGH!!) that look like they are ready to be thrown away. They are the same people who don't tuck a shirt in. They probably have a tacky suit and ugly tie that their own father would not consider wearing these days too.
Yes it is. Unless your an older person like in your 50s or older wear slacks and button front shirt. Or jeans and button front shirts or polos. Because thats would wear in their youth.
Oh man, I really identify with this guy. Dressing up here in Finland is simply not done. I never get to wear my suits. I always get weird looks from my girlfriend when I wear blazers. God forbid I wear trousers with a crease in them.
Michael Herman No ei välttämättä pukua, mutta kato ”trad”, ”prep” ja ”ivy” tyylit. Kyllä stadin alueella ihmiset pukeutuu, mutta suurinta osaa ei kiinnosta
Wearing vintage clothes at the age of 13. Its really hard to do it at the begining, without everybody asking me if i was going to the church, or to an evenr, but that's starting to fade away. Thank you, GG!
Having done quite a bit of interviews for hiring people over the years, the real difference in the college slouch and the sharp dressed man is in how seriously they are taken. When people came wearing flip-flops faded/worn jeans, and wrinkled shirts (or worse t-shirts), I immediately made a judgement. I'm not bragging about that and I'm sure I passed over some good people but in my opinion, if a person doesn't care enough to dress well, they had two strikes against them from the start. The sad thing is that in today's politically correct society, I couldn't give them that feedback. But when I have a chance to coach someone going to an interview, I start with how they should dress.
The attitude is shown by the way one is dressed. Smart clothes do indeed often reflect how a person feels. Smart, considerate and alert, or slovenly and couldn’t care less.
I also can identify. I am now in my 40s and have been a fan of classic style look. Back in the the early 1900s farmers wore suits in the field. In our family they wanted to make sure they look good on all occasions. You dont often see that today.
it was interesting watching the whole interview. I'm 25 year old guy and started two years ago to dress up. I was happy to find your channel by chance, cause it helped and helps me to get more into gentle men style
Gentleman's Gazette is the go-to place to up your game. Also, listen to Hugo Jacomet as to what it is to be a gentleman. The outstanding Thing Mr. Jacomet said was (I paraphrase) "A gentleman is kind, never puts another person down, etc. but overall a gentleman is humble." Dressing well and elegantly is a way to make a better society.
This video is classic Gentleman's Gazette. You really need to bring back this style of video, where you interview stylish people about their preferences. Great stuff.
I haven't worn a T-shirt since I was ten (16 now) but decided back in August to just jump in and go full-out on wearing the older stuff I've always wanted to. I found just 'taking the plunge' worked!!!
Second hand is the way to go! Just by looking through some common sites I found alot of nice dapper tweed jackets and trousers in my size. And since vintage clothing isn’t something people want, they’re not that expensive either.
I can relate to this! I'm in my first year of a bachelor's degree and I'm the only one in my class who wears tucked-in shirts with chinos, and cardigans on top of that when it's windy. I get some weird looks from time to time, but also a few compliments so I don't mind. It's all about feeling good in your own clothes
I've bought from Benny Reese of Reese's Vintage Pieces before, and I can recommend dealing with him. I own a (approx.) 1918-1924 two-piece suit which I bought from him, along with a waistcoat from the 1860s. He tends to have a lot more 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Great collection though.
I think he takes a very practical approach to dressing well - mixing and matching with certain high street items is essential for men on a budget in 2017.
What would you think on wearing suits in High School? For graduation i wore it in High school and i was the only one wearing a suit with a Tie while everyone else wore jeans and T-shirts and i felt Great, unique. People look strange cause they look all the same but i don't feel comfortable in wearing T-shirts or jeans. Are there any tips
ive been going for the classic look since I could afford to buy my own clothes and while it is easy to get a lot of okay suits on the cheap, to really get the right look is either very expensive or requires this type of advice.
14K views... since December 2015?... My good sirs... We must be a rare breed ( By that I mean there's not a lot of young guys like us who love or would love to wear some suits lol )
as to the comfort- a good suit is just as comfortable (if not more so) than jeans and as to sweatpants...well sometimes one has to sacrifice a LITTLE bit of comfort for a lot of style.
Just subscribed ! , I just realized that this is the lifestyle I want , I had enough of sweatshirts , jackets and jeans or sweatpants all the time , time to make a change !
"i'll look up madder tie" and just buy something same here! When i learn something new about fashion, I usually go on ebay and find something used/vintage. I have my first madder tie (ordered 2 days before watching this video) coming monday because I learned about how ancient madder is made. Same for most my 40-60s vintage hickok and swank tie bars/clips/rings/accessories (ps im 28)
Adolescent Elegance That's great to hear! I'm 16 and do the same. Sure I get dirty looks or judgment from my peers but when they wear joggers and sneakers to "dress up" it's hard to take them seriously. Never let the naysayers stop you from being you!
Love this discussion and the attitude of your guest, Ethan. Most of my jackets are from thrift. I am new to this channel and am wondering if you have advice on picking a tailor/seamstress or how to communicate with them so you get the look you want. Also, how does one determine a reasonable price for hemming pants, etc. The older I get the more suspenders make sense. Thanks so much.
I have recently started watching your videos and absolutely love them. I really liked this particular video. I am an engineering student doing a post graduate degree in the UK university and I love to dress well. The problem is I can't get into proper formal cloths being into engineering field. I usually dress into blazer, shirt, jeans and oxford /derby shoes. Do you have any recommendations for engineering students/ field job to look sharp? Thanks. Keep up the good work. :)
+deadlymaximus01 I know engineers who dress well. We have quite a few readers and customers who are engineers or even IT people who dress well. You can pull it off, but bear in mind you are always communicating with your clothes
You will definitely become "that guy" if you dress up more often than just during special occasions. The question is if it's something bad, which it isn't. After a while after becoming "that guy" you'll feel more confident and you'll also take pride in dressing up. The only way to not become that guy is to wear untucked shirts and avoid leather shoes, but that wouldn't be very stylish. So the options are to fit in in a modern group or have the courage to be the best dressed man in the room. Me myself choose the second option and it works great for me.
I am currently making the transition from dressing as a boy with jeans hoodies etc to dressing as a man, oxfords, chinos and dress shirts etc, im 24 and British and believe me, once the going to an interview comments pass, which they will, everyone will love it, women especially. its sad that dressing like a gent has whilst also being timeless, gone the way of all most being outspoken. But first impressions are always the most important, even if you never see them again. Be that guy they remember as "the gent who dressed spectacularly" rather than "boy in hoodie"
Making friends with dealers and being consistent buying from them is key too. I have made friends & they sent me 2 free ascots when i paid for 1, and we became friends and he will send more (plus a smoking jacket whenever I get my sizing). So i support their ebay store, and what they do sell. And yes, less than $20. Pashmina & silk scarves, Versace pocket squares and shirts, Charvet, all under $20 each. At the most i spend maybe $50-70 a piece (used) for Turnbull, Mezlan (Italian) shoes because they were like $500-800 new and worth it lol. Ebay (and online) has a lot of deals if you willing to look and research a lot (like I do. I also have plenty experience on how to spot fakes, i'm the best at it). Not everyone knows what they selling or care to make a fortune, like this versace piece I hope to win the auction today. hope this helps someone
Yeah, I've literally just started wearing a wool blazer with my usual black jeans and black Chelsea boots, but I now tuck in my polo shirt. People have started commenting, "You have a date or something?" The best was, "Do you have a job interview?" Yeah, I always wear black jeans and polo shifts to interviews.....smh.
When i was about 14-15 i dressed as all teachers said ”elegant”. I wore like shirts with ties or bowties, often with some kind of pull over. I had chinos, dresspants or very nice jeans. I had derby shoes or similar kinds of shoes and i had a nice overcoat. Unfortuneatly i didn’t own any blazers or so and that is expensive to buy when you still growing but since a long time lefted the children’s section in stores :( Then i started the ”gymnasium” (school for age 16-18) and i went to a music programme so everyone was kind of ”indiepop” so i was going a bit to that and then more to punk style. But now when i go to university i wanna go back to that more elegant style. I have always loved likte the 60s style of mods fashion and 60s furniture. But i also love to see movies and stuff from or about the time from like 1900 to 1969 cause people looked so good. Don’t get me wrong folks! People look good today too and of course everyone should wear clothes they like! But i really like that style with suits, blazers etc... Unfortuneatly it’s expensive to buy nice suits and blazers:( I thought of starting with cheap suits from for example H&m since i can get a full suit there for under 1000kr but noooooo... everything they have are named ”skinny” or ”super skinny” and i went there and knew that they would have sizes up to like 40 and i normally have somewhere between 52 and 56 depending of brand.... i went there and saw a blazer... size 40.... put it on.... and realized that that size was in reality like a 46 or 48.... veeerryyy smaaaaallll... the sleves ended like with my elbow and the whole blazer was so f*cking short i can’t explain it... that was a ”skinny”....
Hey man, really love your videos. You should get in touch with Nick Waterhouse. He is a soul/rhythm & blues musician based in Los Angeles and he has a great, great style just like you. Check out his work and style !
Is it bad that, for me, to not be wearing a tie is to be 'casual'?! And to not be wearing a shirt... well, that's just being a slob. :P I'm joking, of course.
The 30s was the midst of the Great Depression...most people were hardly concerned with clothes but with getting food and a roof over their heads. You are fantasizing.
A man, especially a young man with the shoulders of a little girl should not wear these types of clothing styles. Stick to the T's, hoodies and flop cloths; or at least until you gain a man's body.
A tucked in shirt nowadays is dressing up.

Time for a new girlfriend.
My girlfriend loves to dress up with me! We like to look nice just for the sake of it.
Im 14 years old and I LOVE the 1920s, and I always dress in suits, and I would love to go back in time and be a gentleman in the 1920s
