For those who didn’t know, The Patriots' victory was their fourth overall and first since 2004's Super Bowl XXXIX, ending a 10-year championship drought. They finished the regular season with a 12-4 record en route to their eighth Super Bowl appearance, tying the record held by the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, and sixth under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. The Seahawks, led by their Legion of Boom defense, also obtained a 12-4 record and were making their third Super Bowl appearance, in addition to their second consecutive after winning Super Bowl XLVIII. As the defending champions, the Seahawks were seeking to become the first to repeat since the Patriots in 2004. For the second consecutive season, both teams were the top seed from their respective conference.[13] Super Bowl XLIX was kept within a one-possession margin until Seattle took a 10-point lead in the third quarter. New England responded by scoring 14 consecutive points during the fourth to take a 28-24 lead with just over two minutes remaining. The game is best remembered for the Seahawks' last play, in which they threatened to score a winning touchdown from New England's 1-yard line, but were intercepted in the final seconds by Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler. Butler's interception is regarded as one of the greatest plays in NFL history, while Seattle's decision to pass instead of run the ball is considered one of the worst calls. Brady, who set the Super Bowl record for completions at 37, was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time, tying the record held by Joe Montana. Two years later, Brady would surpass both records in Super Bowl LI.
Agreed. People criticize the call endlessly when they should be giving loads of credit to Browner and Butler for absolutely perfect diagnosis, teamwork, and execution. That play is a touchdown if those two guys don’t play it perfect. The hawks lost, but mostly the pats won.
Bcz they are almost guaranteed a touchdown with Lynch on the 1 even if they straight up told the patriots exactly where he was going to run. And wasn’t it 2nd down? And u throw it instead of trying 2 runs first? That was just dumb. The defense was great but they shouldn’t have even had the chance to get one of the greatest interceptions in history.
@@j3n1us I agree that a lynch run almost guarantees a td. My point is that a lynch fumble and an interception on that play have about the same chance of happening. If butler and browner didn’t play it perfectly then it’s a td, hawks win, and no one questions the call. You can’t question the call because the other team made a spectacular play, you just have to tip your cap to them. Like pats fans do for the giants in 2007 and 2011, defense was great, Tyree and manningham just made a special catch. Hawks lost a back-to-back and the pats lost perfection.
One of the most underrated plays in SB history was Hightower tacking Lynch and keeping him out of the end zone. He had to push an OL off him and then dive to barely make the play. The rest is history.
Also Browner jamming his receiver at the line to allow butler to cut to the ball. People criticize Carroll when they should be praising Butler, Browner, and Hightower.

As a Patriots fan after that Kearse catch I was sitting there in disbelief like not again bro...underrated part of that play though is the absolute great play Malcolm Butler makes on that throw to Kearse he broke that pass up like his life depended on it.
Funny how the crazy catch Kearse made where the ball just happened to fall right to him while laying on his back is ignored or a helmet catch by a journeyman receiver in another SuperBowl isn’t luck but Brady is lucky his defense bailed him out. The Eagles SB win versus the Pats is the only time Brady didn’t guide the offense to a score late in 4th quarter and his defense let him down in 3 SB (he set passing record vs Eagles) but in this instance you mock him. I am a Cowboys fan but the hatred the GOAT gets is hilarious. Whether Russ, OC or Pete messed this up that’s part of the game and in crunch time Pete is also the coach who had Reggie Bush off the field against Texas on 4th and 2 to lose that Natty. Butler and the other DB read this play that they ran all year and it ended the game, period
Didn't you watch the game or this clip for that matter? Brady brought his team back from 10 down, a Super Bowl record at the time for a comeback. He was clutch that entire 4th quarter as usual. It was Kearse's miracle catch that put the Seahawks in position to win.
