  • Sky News host Chris Kenny says Chief of the Australian Defence Force Angus Campbell is a man who “threw the ADF under the bus”.
“I talked about Angus Campbell,” Mr Kenny said.
“A man who threw the ADF under the bus in my view.
“With those alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, effectively a Taliban leadership there now.
“We have not had one conviction.”

Our defence forces are WAY too woke to fight any potential enemy. If, say, Indonesia sent a couple of battalions of their incredibly excellent special forces (trained by Aussies) to land at Darwin, the ADF would first have to do a risk assessment dressed in high viz, then take months to decide whether or not to oppose the landing, so as not to offend Indonesia...

Angus Campbell, Chief of Defence Force, wanted to punish 3000 Special Operations Task Group personnel who served in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2013, stripping each and every one of them of their meritorious unit citation over unproven, untested allegations of war crimes against some of them. No top brass included.

In a nutshell, the global threat level rests around three intersecting axes (1) RUS (2) PRC and (3) IRN.
A strategy for defence is simple Align - Arm - Build - Engage, Enable, Deter and Defeat.
ALIGN means ensuring key alliances are upheld and where necessary broadened - this is both a government and ADF responsibility.
ARM means acquire the correct means in the correct quantities to meet the threats posed by (1), (2) and (3).
BUILD means build the capabilities required and build the means to logistically supply the arms/equipment and their re-supply and manufacture. Again this a ADF and government responsibility.
ENGAGE means open and honest engagement with Australian citizens to develop critical support or dissent and ensure key industries are aligned and can contribute in resupply, resources, rebuilding and building war of materiel. This is a tripartite relationship between Government/ADF and the citizens they act for.
ENABLE this means ensuring the relationships are made/built and the long term capital plan is in place to ensure the strategy can be developed, it also means enabling the citizenry who are far more capable in building, defending, maintaining and running critical infrastructure than government/police/ADF.
DETER means exactly that ensure, the posture, positioning and facing are in place to act as a meaningful deterrent.
DEFEAT means a willingness at government level to counter threats and defeat them in a proactive manner.
Successive Australian Governments and ADF leadership cadres have failed to fully and clearly enunciate the threats (which haven't changed over thirty years or so) and as function of this they have failed to adequately ALIGN - ARM - BUILD and ENGAGE.
I can not stress this enough, this is a very significant and profound failure of leadership and government.

He’s been a total disgrace to his position as CDF.

Campbell did not want to strip 3,000 medals of Australian soldiers. He wanted to withdraw unit meritorious service citations. Any professional soldier reading the Brereton Report could discount all the claims of criminal behaviour and just consider the breeches of military discipline and basic professional standards and have concluded the removal of these citations was warranted.

If you believe that then he should lead by example and hand his DSC back. His tenure in TF633, 2011 was hardly 'Distinguished'. If the guys are to be charged then he needs to be tried under the omission mode of the Yamashita Standard in the ICC - we are, after all a signatory to the Rome Statute. We note his mate Paul preempts this however by suggesting he was too far away to know what was going on. But... that is precisely the Yamashita principle - He ought to have been closer and known. Had he been closer then not only could he have influenced his subordinates' moral compasses, but perhaps even justify his DSC. The citation of which reads, "...in action." (not a lot of 'action' in HQ Al Minah, Abu Dhabi was there?). The double standard between senior officers and soldiers stinks.

You always miss the point. If crimes were committed or there were systemic failures in regard to discipline - this reflects a poor leadership cadre, poor training and poor ethos. The strategic failures of the ADF over the last 20 years have been many and are profound. The consequences of their collective malfeasance are significant. The Australian Command and Staff course is utter garbage, third rate, out dated and out moded. This builds on the back of the third rate and myopic training offered by Duntroon/ADFA. The lack of insight and self awareness of the ADF and its leadership is appalling.
