A few breeds crave training, many love it, some are indifferent and then there's the Basset... for one to even finish the course means its enjoying the process or else it wouldn't have even gotten up off its dog bed.
+TheAyeAye1 that's true. Sometimes I clap and he comes after me, but only sometimes. Otherwise he won't obey any command. I really wished we could go out without him smelling for junk food..
Having worked a ring where he ran (agility club near Buffalo) he had a habit of getting on top of the A-frame or dog walk and just enjoying being tall. What you can't hear in this video is just HOW HYPED his mom had to get to get him "wound up," but once The Diesel was warmed up, there was power in spades. (In 2022 I assume he's not running any more, and I'm not sure he's not at the Bridge standing on something tall waiting for his person.)
@@dcfan1107 well, in this case i'm glad they didn't just leave him staked in their yard or something. I'm glad they took him back to the rescue so that he could go to someone who did want to take the time. It's weird that sometimes that's the noblest thing you can do for a dog.
😂🤣👏👍❤️❤️❤️❤️Shortly after my dad passed away at just 58, my mom bought a puppy that she thought was a beagle. Then Sophia began to grow, and grow and grow and it was clear Sophie was not a beagle but a basset! A giant basset! We all called her SOFA instead of Sophie. But mom and grandma (who came to live with her) adored that beast of a dog! ❤️❤️❤️

There's breeds that will always win agility and then there's pups that'll win your heart. I absolutely loved this, I couldn't help but laugh and smile. 🙂
Don't they have super short legs to?? I mean, naturally with their big body size compared to their short legs? I would imagine that they're not gonna be very fast.
I've loved and owned 14 bassets in my lifetime. I never had a single one who could possibly have navigated this course!!!! Great job, Diesel and handler!

lol Oh my god, "chicken meat suit"! There's still no guarantee there, as he very well may just run right around every single one of those jumps just to get to you. lol
I’ve watched this several times and am always impressed by Diesel’s speed, agility, and most of all, patience in the slalom course and teeter totter ramp.
I have never seen a basset THAT engaged in a sporty activity EVER in my life. Untrainable? BS! Look how well he performed for a basset! Diesel is to die for, he’s awesome as hell
The fact that even if he was slow and not exactly athletic in any way, but he was so precise and obedient was amazing. He certainly is trainable, those people were wrong about little him!! Training such a stubborn dog is amazing, and it's amazing how smart the dog is if you really analyze his movement
There sure are times when a basset hound can get rambunctious and is full of energy, but anybody who has ever taken a basset for a walk has found out that their energy goes from Full-On to Okay-I'm-pooped-so-carry-me-the-rest-of-the-way-home in next to no time. I'm amazed at the stamina that Diesel had in this event! I was half-expecting him to stop about halfway through and just plop down for a nap, like every self-respecting basset hound would have done. Bassets are the best damn breed of dog -- certainly the funniest.
You madam, have done the impossible. Bassets are one of the most stubborn breeds on planet earth, mine is three and he would have tries to walk under all the hurdles!
While this was 8 years ago, and Diesel may or may not still be with us, the YT algorithm got this one right. I love seeing this guy put forth what had to be a monumental effort to get through this. 👍👍😅😅

She also had to have leg reconstructive surgery. Through all of this she was as pleasant as could be. When I held up the bottle of eye drops, she would tilt back her head. When I changed her leg bandages she stood as still as a statue. She has been gone now for 11/2 years and I miss her terribly, but she lived to the age of ten and was only expected to see her fifth birthday. Collies famously do not ‘live to obey’, they live to work. They will relentlessly outsmart and sass any owner who isn’t up to the task of keeping them in their place and giving them proper mental stimulation. A bored Collie will make your life a living hell. Retriever breeds are typically the kinds of dog that live to please, but even they will lose all respect for an owner that doesn’t train them properly.
That's a bit of an oversimplification. The intelligence of a dog decides whether or not they can learn tricks, the obedience decides whether they want to learn tricks. Neither of these traits is strictly positive or negative and they don't necessarily correlate with each other. Also, smart people/animals will (and should) strive to sharpen their minds, learning tricks is part of that.
Collies absolutely do not 'live to obey', they live to be worked hard. If they do not get enough exercise and stimulation they can get sick or have mental problems.
Before one judges, that dog was abandoned, considered untrainable, and is 8. His handler is working hard to keep him interested and he is moving! They may not have made SCT, but they are in the invitational, that's more than my dogs have done! Before you lower your expectations for bassets, I know a gal who breeds her bassets to do agility, and they are fast, but they still present other challenges, such as baying at ring crew.
If anyone's ever known a basset hound they know getting him to do anything on command is impressive in itself
Agreed the most we could ever teach ours was to sit on command. And walk off leash for one block
They learn what they wanna learn and if they don’t want to do something there’s nothing in the world you could do to make them do it
With enough electricity you can get them to do anything on command.
@@Bellthorian you definitely don't know basset hounds
We've got ours to sit, stay, wait for food till commanded, balance a treat on his nose, shake hands and heel. Took a lot of persistence but they are trainable
This was actually an incredible performance for a basset. My late buddy Bernie would have just sniffed around and tried to visit people in the crowd.
My Bassett would've froze climbing up those obstacles.
My neighbors basset would have just taken a nap!
Bernie sounds like a good boy.
And marked a couple of choice spots for good measure.
He’s the #1-ranked Basset in the world in agility competitions.
There is no #2.

I know basset hounds and this is amazing that she's been able to train him to do agility. Not even close to what they are bred for. Kudos!! 👏👏👏👏
The Basset Warm-Up at the beginning is the best part.
I’m so proud of him for finishing the course. :)
This shows that you don’t have to be a winner to be amazing and adorable!❤️❤️❤️
He's my winner! What a happy guy, enjoying the acclaim.
This popped up on my feed. My hubby and I were gushing and cheering! LOVE THOSE HOUNDS!
This video has brought an enormous amount of joy to our home! Thank you!
I love how he went through those poles at his own pace, so cute❤
Before one judges, that dog was abandoned, considered untrainable, and is 8. His handler is working hard to keep him interested and he is moving! They may not have made SCT, but they are in the invitational, that's more than my dogs have done!
Before you lower your expectations for bassets, I know a gal who breeds her bassets to do agility, and they are fast, but they still present other challenges, such as baying at ring crew.
Yeah - but ya gotta love that bay!
Bassets are GREAT rabbit hunters.
The most entertaining agility competitor I've ever seen. Quite a feat
