this is the first ever tutorial i saw that actually explains everything in such a small amount of time, when i watch any anatomy video they just say "simplify" without ever giving context or explaining anything so THANK YOU SO MUCH
i am a noob, like noob noob regarding drawing. i've been watching videos to kinda grasp concepts and have a clear starting point. You, Sir, are, to this date, still the best video I've ever came accross. This video was a missing part of my own drawing journey puzzle, and I hope more people will come across your content because you deserve it.
You sir are a genius. I have watched a lot of videos on anatomy but none of them clicked and few were just straight up condescending and tried to fit in too many things for a beginner. But your video oh my god. This is just perfect. It clicked & made sense and just filled up the gaps in my mental model. Thank you for making this video. This needs more than a million views.
I usually don't comment under videos, but I've watched tons of them on how effectively learning anatomy and this one is probably the first that helped me know where to start. thank you so much!
the swapping out cylinders for the limbs to boxes has helped me so much. at first i couldnt understand where the top and sides and stuff of the limbs were because it can be hard to tell on images with little contrast between lighting and shading but with practice, using boxes for the limbs, getting the right orientation has become a million times easier. this is one of the best art tutorials i have ever come across, thank you so much!!!
Yeah that makes a huge difference! Though notice it's still okay to draw the cylinder first, and the box on top of it, if it's hard to figure out the box on its own
2:30 The right side is what I’ve been stuck on. Finally someone who doesn’t just tell me to “just draw basic shapes here and there”. and provides a 10 second timelapse of them drawing the left side without any good explaination on what they’re doing.
Glad I could help! :D More to come, you can actually make it easier to transition from box mannequin to figure once you get used to it, by wrapping it all in one boxy pillow shape
this actually helped me a lot more than the TikTok tutorials, I know how to draw a body but i usually don't start off with a shape that makes it way more confusing and harder to draw. But I am glad to see that there are actually some helpful pieces of media that can help me get better at my art, instead of learning it the hard way
I was having trouble drawing legs last night, and after doing some more inspecting into my drawing, I noticed that the proportions are a little off. Glad I found this video this morning. I'm going to start practicing more of the proportions. Thank you so much!❤
organi..fy, organis, organic, organize😭. thanks so much for this man, the next step in my art was to learn body construction because I've learnt the basics of the fundamentals and a good chunk of anatomy due to my biology classes all that was left now is to put them together and start making art but body construction really held me back
OMG!!!!! This is PERFECT! Thank you so much! I've been trying to reach that "oh this makes sense now" moment with anatomy for ages and this finally did it for me! So seriously thank you! I now have something I can actually practice and build on!
Ily sm for this, i really wish i saw this when i searched up ‘anatomy for beginners’ for the about three months ago. It literally took me about 5-20 mins to draw the base. Now all i have to do is learn how to properly draw hands, heads and the lower body. Your so underrated omg❤❤
Thanks Nemo, you're amazing. I fin that this rule applies to all areas of art the more I delve into it: going from macro to micro is the key. When composing scenarios and paintings, for example, just blocking out the big shapes to get everything correct such as perspective, volumes, and colors, and then slowly rendering and adding more details little by litte is the way to go. The same goes for anatomy. We should focus on getting a very simple mannequin in the correct proportions and perspective, instead of trying to render a fully-fleshed out body.
I've watched so many anatomy videos and was always confused because they always explained it so quickly that I couldn't even tell what they were doing. But your video helped me a lot. I was like "ah yeah, that makes sense" the whole time. Not like all the other videos so THANK YOU🙏 ❤
Why has no one explained it that way before? It was always just "Draw a box and then throw some forms on there". This for some reason clicked holy shit thanks so much.
0:46 This man knows the stuff, I'll share it with the homies because I never got used to the whole "Body is 7 heads" kind of deal. In fact, back when I was a total beginner this just caused a lot of hassle whenever I tried to draw different poses on different angles. Also, highly recommend everyone to make a version of your 3D mannequin and rig it. I know it's daunting, but just the head and torso would do it (forget about the neck too if you wish) I did this on Blender and thankfully I was able to drop the FBX export onto CSP and from there I familiarized myself with the 3D shapes of the body. I wish I did this WAY earlier, but better late than never I guess.
dude ive never commented on an art video before but your video has helped me so much this is the first time ive ever commented on an art video thank you so much!!!
The best guy at drawing just help me. I can finally draw people and they’re not garbage for lunch. You should definitely give his videos videos and likes and subscribe to him.
This was a Fantastic video that makes things... SO MUCH EASIER on my aspect. So I have watched and practiced other techniques from Other youtubers and how I often do my structure of the body is a mix mash between various things I have learned that helped carried my art to where it is, and that I'm just getting the Anatomy a bit better (Though my bigger issues is stuff liek eyes and maybe how the character is posed). so often I to have a box torso but I try to do things like Cricle joints and circle elbows/knees, Triangle for the pelvis (Even though I feel like it's been not helping me nearly as much as it could), and so on and so fourth. Though the Circle joints does not help and usually I end up drawing my lines to where it makes more sense rather than going out of my way to follow the circle and the Triangle pelvis that I usually draw looks more flat and makes things hard on. Basically my Method that I have been using has been scuffed and I needed to find a better way to draw the basic body itself. But, how this uses the Box method through and through just blew my mind! The cylinder and the structuring just made total sense while watching this. This will certainly be something I will keep watching and practice on to make my characters look a bit more proportionate. I appreciate this video and I hope that this can help carry my art further on a proportionate level! I will make you proud!
I think I'm starting to get it. Thanks for the video, definitely gonna study this video to really get down anatomy cause I really want to start drawing characters and all that good stuff.
bro ive been through soo many videos and yours is easily the best one by far! your showing EVERYTHING i was looking for in a video as a beginner, thank youuuuu
Thanks so much, bro. I truly appreciate. So simple and well explained. Just coming across your channel but I think I'll be a regular visitor here now. Thank you ❤
I’ve been drawing for a few years but man I just can’t draw bodies like I want to, it’s always extremely boxy. Comes out bigger than I want it to, so I’m doing an art study. Many of your videos have helped so far! ♥️
I can't thank you enough man! No kidding, I learned a lot in just a day and I'm really excited that I can do something decent for once. Really, thank you.
Nemoooooo... You are the MAN! This is the mannequinization video that's gonna hit us as hard as Krenz Cushart hit you! Plus speaking of Krenz in your other video, I like the angle-to-the-viewer system he does. 0° 22.5° 45° 67.5° 90° Rotation is never arbitrary 👍😎
It's almost the same with mathmatics in school: So many understand formulas directly and some needs years to understand one formula. Sketching a character is the key to draw everything.
Dude. im like no hope for drawing like its SUPER bad and this video alone (Ive watched 10 videos not a single one helped) except this one its simple and looks good. Thank you, you gave me hope You deserve a sub❤
Very helpful video, thanks so much for sharing! 😊 This topic is where I'm now in my art journey! Besides RUclips videos I also consult drawing books, so if you ever write a book on these subjects please let us know 😉
As a beginning artist, for every 3 good looking bodies I draw, I draw 1 that is so terrible I question if I want to continue doing art. Yeah, anatomy is hard especially if you’re just starting out. The issue I got is that I want to draw BIG buff dudes since I want to design intimidating slashers and villains so a lot of anatomy has to be modified or certain things are more significant than others to make up for the drastic difference in anatomy
I would like to ask a question.. How long will it take me to master body drawing if I practice daily? Will I improve within months for example? (The video was really great, thank you!) ++ How long did it take you to reach this level of drawing?
It really depends, I'd say give it at least a year or two if you start from 0. You won't have mastered it anyway. I haven't mastered it myself honestly, and I've been at it for quite some time.

Oh yes, i decided to watch a anatomy tutorial because i felt like it, after i finished sketching it and added a new layer, i just realized i forgot to change the old layer.
Do I need to learn to draw shapes in 3D first and visualize them in 3D? How can I learn to do this? Is drawabox a good place to start? Also im wondering how you know where the box pelvis goes after drawing the torso.

I don't see them wasted, it's all mileage :) Relying on digital tools too much won't help you learn how to draw, you're actually training better on paper!
For me I just don’t know where the arms and hands end. Like I can get the shape down to an extent but then I look back and I see the hand is a little too low or the elbow is too high. That sort of thing.
I just started drawing like 2 days ago, is it alright to move to this even though I haven't fully grasped 3d shapes or perspective yet? I feel like if I practice this I'll learn those along the way as well, while also focusing on them for practice at other times. What do you think?
well It was Kindalike weird that the arms looked short. There was too much space b between the legs, and the overall body was kinda too long it wasn't great
I guess I have trouble with different body types. Like the mannequin covers skinny people but like more buff people or fat people is kind of hard. Or I guess like the proportions of kids and stuff like that. Babies chibi type characters I guess.
The body is not oval though, it's better to think of it in terms of rounded boxes for everything, so you can tell the orientation. Then you just build a cylinder inside each box if you need
Just a question here. From the real life images of skeletons i have seen the ribcage and pelvis are not that far away from each other. Yet your maniquens have the ribcage WAY far upp and the pelvis way far down. If you tried to add the features to these the torso area would look elonggated as all hell and it would look all wrong. Or am i missing something here? 😅
You are correct. The distance is about one closed fist. It is mentioned at some point in the video (2:54) this is a simplification, cause this way you can keep the body shape like a box without the need to twist it. It's done on purpose :) Otherwise it would look like a piece of wood, too stiff. Of course when adding features they would be correct
I ALMOST CRIED, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️🩷🩷🩷

I have a question for the basic proportion lines, how do you measure the proportion if you draw the character in any other pose? (like sitting or crouching)
Eh not really, that's why I said they should be as few as possible. You gotta eyeball and get a feeling for the other poses, especially when foreshortened
"From this:" Shows something I couldn't create not in a million years despite putting 3 years being me drawing constantly

Yes but its hard to transfer a cube into a oval body
The body is not oval though, it's better to think of it in terms of rounded boxes for everything, so you can tell the orientation. Then you just build a cylinder inside each box if you need
