These lieder were chosen by me through a years-long search of some of the greatest lieder by Schubert. Schubert, the 19th century master of melody, harmony, and nearly everything else. Unlike composers like Mozart or Debussy, Schubert composed for himself all the time, seemingly for the sake of composition; when he needed money for a meal, he would simply publish a few manuscripts of his that had been gathering dust on his shelf for years. He is truly the representative repertoire composer that one might associate with a Bohemian artist. His friends were his life, and much of his output would not be with us today if not for his friends, namely Herren Mayrhofer and Schober.
Which ones are my favorite? Easily those with text by Mayrhofer. There is a bizarre sense of intimacy in all of them, a tangible, moving sadness that words cannot express.
These lieder represent Schubert's heart of depth, of dreams, of darkest reality, and most vivid fantasy. Enjoy. - Видеоклипы
Yes, I know Du Bist die Ruh is not underrated. I cannot really tell you why I included it here; it cheapens the experience of finding hidden jewels of Schubert. I suggest listening to “Aus Heliopolis II” D. 754 or “An die Freunde” D. 654, which easily replace Du Bist die Ruh.
Thanks for this: a total universe, Schubert.
Thanks so much, I really enjoyed listening and singing along. Over the years I've come to love the lesser known Schubert songs. He was a composer who never wrote a bad or substandard piece. Everything is love and lovely!
Sind alle fabelhaft schöne lieder. Danke für diese Aufnahme.
Bitte sehr. Geneißen sie.
I discovered this gem on a Hotter recording but looking for the notes proved difficult. No standard collections that I searched had this Lied at all but I finally located it in a huge volume of Schubert‘s collected works & copied it from there. It is very early Schubert but remains one of my favorite Lieds that he composed. I was lucky to find it, as here, in the same key which Hotter used which is also a perfect one for me so transposition was never necessary. This Lied has been with me now for over 20 years & remains a constant recital piece.
Which song?
Great list! But there is this Lied by Schubert that I recently heard and I think it’s also one of the most underrated. It’s a duet called Licht und Liebe.
Epic. For the ages.
what a careful work you made Simon, adding the Musiknoten für diese 27 schöne Lieder, Danke!
This is a wonderful collection. Wish there were more female selections with the female voice but still very beautiful and under known collection
Sto bene quando ascolto queste composizioni: mi connettono al mondo più alto della cultura europea
Un piacere guidato da Eros .
Thanks for this! So useful!
Thanks... The last one fills me with tears
Wonderful! I love your channel! Schubert is one of my favorite composers.
So appreciate this. What a source of pleasure. Thank you so much. 💓 Btw Graham Johnson's 4 part expo of Schubert's life & music is available on YT, courtesy of Sir John Gilhooly. Sure all the officianados on here know this!
Thank you so much!
lovely
Thanks so much for this wonderful selection! One side note: the first lieder's music sheet is in A major but the recording is in G major
Most of the scores of this video are presented in a different key. The frequency of transposition in the world of lied singing is extreme, so extreme that it would be very difficult to find recordings of all of these that are sung in the written key. Although going against Schubert’s intentions, transposition was frequent even in his day. Plus, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s recordings are simply amazing. For the sake of consistency, I have used his recordings for almost all of the lieder.
@@simonkawasaki4229 thanks for the long reply. I never knew about the fact that transpositions are so common as I almost never listen to lieder (some are on my listen list though, love a lot of them too). It is because of the different vocal ranges of different vocalists?
@@tedzhang4168 Yes. Although a well-trained vocalist might be technically capable of singing across a wide range of notes, each will have a (somewhat narrower) range at which their voice is most powerful and expressive. In almost all genres within western music, it's common for singers to transpose a song into whichever key is best suited to their preferred vocal range. (This also depends on the range of the melody - some songs might start on a relatively high note and then go lower, which others might start low and go higher. Because of this, the same vocalist may sing two songs in entirely different keys.)
"Abschied von der Erde" came as a complete surprise. Anymore melodramas by Schubert?
Die Zauberharfe is entirely a melodrama, but I think that Abschied is the only one he wrote for just piano and singer.
Cool stuff.
Glad you liked it!
Первые такты песни "Alinde" совершенно похожи на начало песни "Das Fischermädchen" из сборника "Schwanengesang"
If someone has never listened to schubert, this part would perfectly describe his music 26:25
Interesting to note, Ganymed (8:35) is written in the key of Ab but the recording is played in Gb!
i would not say Du Bist die Ruh is underrated. It is one of the most celebrated songs ever to have been written.
Yes, I heartily agree. I don’t even know why I put it here. I suggest listening to “Aus Heliopolis II” D. 754 or “An die Freunde” D. 654 for an alternative. I wish I had put those in here.
@@simonkawasaki4229 ok thanks. My teacher comes from a lineage that goes back to Schubert (through Salieri who was his teacher) - so I am glad to play Du bist die Ruh (although all his songs are miraculous)
@@simonkawasaki4229 justlistened to both. The heliopolis reminds me of the Weather Vane from winterreise.
Thank-you for posting - but I'm not sure by whose definition you are taking "underrated" from? I have multiple copies of recordings of all the above lieder -- and I agree they are of very high quality & John Reed speaks highly of nearly all, so you don't list many that I would class as either underrated or even obscure.
Hi, can you suggest some sad schubert lieder?
DIESKAU ?
yes!
Surely
I definitely wouldn't count Du bist die Ruh' as underrated, but great collection otherwise!
Agreed. I regret putting it here. If I could, I would replace it with something like An die Freunde D. 654. I highly recommend giving it a listen.
These lieder fill a large gap in my knowledge of Schubert.
It's a pity that the vocal score is in a different key than the one in which Fischer sings
31:44
1:32:32
honestly theres alot of not underrated songs . ganymed???? Nachtstück????? der jüngling und der tod????
Be realistic. I think we can agree that these lieder are comparatively underperformed. I will somewhat agree with you on Ganymed, but Der Jüngling und der Tod is not very well known at all.
