I saw Nez (solo) last month in Nashville -- he opened up with Papa Gene's Blues -- and I embarrassed myself by being the only soul in the house to yell "Play magic, fingers!"
Nesmith was really the only strong song writer in that ensemble. He was the saltiest, the most assertive and one of the two older members (Tork was oldest). He also was the best at integrating his musical roots into the song cycle of Monkee albums....even with their foray into psychedelic music at the end of their productive era. They were pre-fab and not strong musicians but both before and after the Don Kirshner rebellion...they made some great music and some good records.
Rest in peace Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. I emailed Micky Dolenz in December and told him that I really enjoyed getting to see him and Mike Nesmith at the Texas Trust CU theater in October. I still have the ticket on my phone from when I saw Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz at the Majestic Theater in Dallas on Thursday April 16, 2020 at 8 pm.
The Monkees inspired a whole generation of new musicians. Even at 11, I knew Mickey wasn't playing drums, but I still wanted to be him and be a drummer. My parents bought me an inexpensive drum set and built me a soundproof room out in the garage. I played along to Hal Blaine or whoever it was laying down those sweet Monkees drum tracks! Of course, I moved on from just the Monkees quickly, but im sure I can still cover I'm A Believer or Pleasant Valley Sunday on drums and vocal.
I don't care HOW old Mike is. He is my favorite Monkee, hands down. He STILL has the voice of an angel and just as good lookin as he was 50 years ago :)
Ok I believe that Michael Nesmith was a 24K head turner who had a face and body that could stop traffic at one time. But FFS, he looks like what he is now, a 72 year old man. He was already starting to lose his beautiful hair in the 60's, which was the real reason for the beanie, IMO. Or do you gush with flattery hoping he's reading these comments and asks you for a little cybersex in VirtualRanch?
GingerGilligan "Or do you gush with flattery hoping he's reading these comments and asks you for a little cybersex in VirtualRanch?" First off, no. I don't do the VR since it doesn't work properly on my laptop. Second, was it really necessary to be so bitchy? What, did he deny YOU of the cybersex requests so you feel the need to take it out on other Nez fans?
Unfortunately as each one passes they get the respect they have always deserved. They never claimed to be more than what they are. And IMO what they ARE is a major part of the soundtrack to so many of our lives.
That's because Don Kirchner had all.the music recorded 4 the first 2 albums and all they were ALLOWED to do was sing the beach boys used session musicians for there albums but that's never mentioned
Unfortunately as each one passes they get the respect they have always deserved. They never claimed to be more than what they are. And IMO what they ARE is a major part of the soundtrack to so many of our lives.
Nez is a man of many talents. He created the first music video that kicked off MTV. You can see in his heart he loves playing with his brothers Mickey and Peter. And we the fans love you!
If they'd let Mike Nesmith write more and sing more they would have been even bigger than they were. He is like Roy Orbison, he just opens his mouth and it's so effortless, and beautiful.
Mike,I go absolutely bonkers when I hear this and all your other tunes.carry on my friend...!!!!!! I've been with you since your first day.,and I could never be happier.!!!!!!!
You got that right. Nesmith on his own has been weak for a very long time now, and Mickey's solo stuff lost its luster long ago, but that harmony between them is like no other group ever.
I was at this show and the sound in the room was Amazing! Something that is hard to capture on today's hand held devices. The musician's captured the sound and spirit of the actual recordings and I was blown away by that. I have seen other Monkees shows in the past BUT this was by far superior!
I hope the Monkees that are no longer with us knew that we will never forget them. Mike, Peter and Davy live on forever in our hearts. Mickey, you've been the driving force keeping those great Monkees hits alive! Much love, much respect, sir. Hey, can you make me an honorary Vampire society member?
Oh gee, our old friends are getting older by the day...hard to believe that almost 50 years ago these 4 guys were running around on a beach and making everyone laugh, and NOW they're a bunch of grandfathers pushing 70 or more. There again, I'll be 48 soon and remember watching them after kindergarten and after school in the early 70's when they were in rerun. Seems like it was all yesterday, man. Thank you for this clip, it's musical history as far as I'm concerned.
There were OH SO MANY songs Mum and I loved to sing with, but this one is one of those that we bloody well wore out the record playing this one song just to learn it correctly!
Buck Owens country rocked, The Monkees rocked country! Thank you Michael Nesmith for bringing that sound to music & TV, you pioneer. This group deserves to be in the R&R HoF maybe The Nez can help this long over due train to make it there putting to rest the urban myth that refuses to die that these guys can't play, are some joke! after all, this tour was conceived as anniv. of LP Headquarters, their "statement" as a real band.
I love this Monkee line up! Nothing compares to the original 4 of course, but I always loved the Monkees as a trio too, with Mike or Davy, keep rocking & laughing guys!
Love the Monkees ! They got old, but so did I and it's a trip back to childhood. Mike's voice is still so great. It' sad that Davy is not alive and well somewhere enjoying his life . . . they sure made awesome music together!
I wish, That I could talk to them in person for myself or at least on the telephone. I've been a Monkees watcher/listener For even as a teenager. :-) One of my dreams will come true if that ever happen. ♡
Yes, I have mentioned to some friends that Mike seemed very touched by the audience reaction. I also thought he was both touched and proud during the introduction of his son Christian at the end.
Could someone explain why the rock n roll hall of fame people do not like the Monkees? Nothing against any inductees but the Monkees DESERVE it. They may have been created for tv but they rebelled and won. Headquarters proved their merit. They were innovative, fresh and talented, all four were n are. They have waited long enough. We fans have waited long enough. Put aside personal predjudices n get the Monkees in already.
Thank you so much for this fantastic upload. I appreciate being able to live vicariously through all of you who actually got to go to one of their shows. These videos are all so fantastic. I seems like they got better and better with each show. I'm so glad Mike joined them and they were able to do this.
Perfect! This song is at its best when you can hear Mick's original top notes too. It almost sounds like they have backup singers too but that might just be the crowd. I have been to concerts and heard such fascinating harmonics from fans who have lived inside these songs so long they bring a whole new thing to the experience. My uncle Bill Schach t was like that especially with old hymns. He just roared I saw the light, reminding folks being born again is not for sissies. Mick's high harmonics remind us that this isn't su c h a simple song in form or meaning either.
R.I.P. Mike. Thanks for those wonderful songs.
I saw Nez (solo) last month in Nashville -- he opened up with Papa Gene's Blues -- and I embarrassed myself by being the only soul in the house to yell "Play magic, fingers!"
the best Monkees songs always seem to be Mike Nesmith songs

I agree.
Absolutely..
@@martinleavitt6094 Micky songs always ROCKED !!!
They are gems.
That is simply wonderful.
Great Musician Mike..great days with the boy's. Legend.
RIP Mike, thanks for everything.
My most favorite song ever!!
Rest in peace Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. Thank you, Mike
I cry every time I watch this. He looks so happy to be doing this in his age and it makes me soooo happy that he is still at it :)
:)
RIP Mr. Nesmith :(
I think in the end Mike was PROUD to be a Monkee!
Mike is my number one guitar hero. He IS the reason I learned to play guitar. I must meet this man.
The Monkees inspired a whole generation of new musicians. Even at 11, I knew Mickey wasn't playing drums, but I still wanted to be him and be a drummer. My favorite Monkee too! :-)
How true

So Ginger, and how old do you think the fans of the show are? Loved him then and love him now.
I think Mike's wool hat should be in the Smithsonian, that would be cool
You said it brother!
Most DEFINITELY!!! 👍‼️
Yes more than ever after he passed yesterday....God bless his soul....
For sure!
It could be in the Michale neSMITHOSONIAN I'm sorry I thought it was funny
Mike can certainly still play and sing! All four Monkees were and are talented guys. They deserve more respect!
Yes they do c Louise hopefully they will get it in time
Unfortunately as each one passes they get the respect they have always deserved.
If jimi hendrix was best guitarist in the world then the monkees best band in the world because Jimi opened for the monkees for 4 shows
I absolutely love you no matter at what age, wow
Just saw Michael Nesmith at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles
He sang this song and Joanne and Different Drum
Unfortunately as each one passes they get the respect they have always deserved. They never claimed to be more than what they are.
And IMO what they ARE is a major part of the soundtrack to so many of our lives.
I was at this concert! The place went so crazy nuts when they introduced Mike. He's my favorite and I got tickets to see them in Indiana next month!
This is amazing! some people never sound this good live. To sound this good after so many years is so wonderful to see.

Mickey's soaring harmony makes a very special song something sublime... Play Magic Fingers!
You got that right. Nesmith on his own has been weak for a very long time now, and Mickey's solo stuff lost its luster long ago, but that harmony between them is like no other group ever.
I love that song magic fingers
Yupp!..
Michael Nesmith...is great...can't have a Monkee's concert without him.
Pretty amazing, he still sounds the same after all these decades.
Thanks for the memories guys...
Mike Nesmith still melts my heart; he always has, and he always will. Mike Nesmith owns My Heart 😍💙😍
He is one of the few people that can put his own 'style' into a song, and make it still sound great!, or even BETTER! !!!
He is such a talented man. I love all of the Monkees, but he is the most all-around talented of them!
Micky has always had a perfect harmonic blend with Mike. This song still sounds beautiful decades later!
He still slays.
Getting old sucks ass. Being able to still get up on stage, and be appreciated is wonderful. Many more years to you!
Such a 1-derful song, Rest In Peace Mike Nesmith !!!
I cant imagine for the life of me, being a musician and ever getting tired of singing and playing these songs for such an enthusiastic crowd.
Anybody notice Micheal Nesmith gets a lot of cheers great singer personality too. Hansome too still wow!!
Oh man....so GREAT!!!!!LOVE YOU MIKE!!!
I wish they were young! God is so meam to me, making me fangirl over the young Monkees and young Beatles.
I was at this show and the sound in the room was Amazing! Something that is hard to capture on today's hand held devices. The musician's captured the sound and spirit of the actual recordings and I was blown away by that. I have seen other Monkees shows in the past BUT this was by far superior!
Godspeed, Papa Nez...
I was at that show with my 14 year old son, it was his birthday we had a great time... Thanks for posting this memory from the show!
I went too…
God bless Michael for returning to the Monkees.
And he came back again. I got tickets to go see Mike and Micky in Biloxi Ms. In April, I am so excited I can hardly stand the wait.
Michael still sounds pretty damned good.
I love the Country-esque sound of this song
This is my favorite 'Mike' song,as I used to say when I was a kid.Thank GOD I was a young girl of this era!!
And starring Michael Nesmith's shoes!
Happy birthday Mike! I have always loved your music; you have always been my favorite Monkee! GOD BLESS!
That sounded as good as it did when the guys first done it back during the TV series in the 60's, so cool. :)
I love all the monkees songs! My brothers and I use to watch the reruns when they came on nick at nite!
Mike was always my fav. but i wish he would have toured (more) while Davy was alive...
Greatest Monkee song of all time.......
Love you MIKE! Miss you Davy and Peter :( Gosh, you guys have made my life so much more happy! I can't tell ya! Thank You!

I still listen to Mike's solo albums
this is fantastic. grew up with these guys. Nez was the best writer bar none
Amava os Monkees, marcou minha infância 👏♥️

That was wonderful I hope I can see them while I'm back in the south
Love this song.
This man is a genius, do you understand?
I was thinking the same thing when I read his Wikipedia entry. Guy is a freaking genius.
angrysquirrel11 Listen to Mike for five minutes! His genius is far greater than any encyclopedia could explain!
I wish, That I could talk to them in person for myself or at least on the telephone.
I've been a Monkees watcher/listener
For even as a teenager. :-) One of my dreams will come true if that ever happen. ♡
My favorite Monkees song.
Always my favorite of the Monkees, followed by Peter (strangely enough). Followed his when he had the First National Band.
As handsome and talented as ever...
"I have no more than I did before, but now I've got all that I need ...
For I love you and IIIIIII know Youuuuu Looooove Meeee"
Pefect ending.
Yes, I have mentioned to some friends that Mike seemed very touched by the audience reaction. I also thought he was both touched and proud during the introduction of his son Christian at the end.
WOW!!!! LUV ME SOME NESMITH!
GREAT TOUR. THANKS
One my favorite monkee songs, from their first album, never heard this performed in concert before! thanks mike!

+C Louise The Monkees didn't really exist. If they were somehow to induct them, you would probably have to put 40 guys on the stage.
+Steve McGady of course they existed - I saw them live in concert back in Miami '67. Hendrix OPENED for them.
+C Louise Jann Wenner doesn't like them. Pretty much as simple as that.
It's also why KISS isn't in there and why it took Rush so long to get in.
+Jamie Rose But KISS IS in there.
Major Payne They weren't for a long time, though. For similar reasons.
Love it. Great song.
Thank you so much for this fantastic upload. I appreciate being able to live vicariously through all of you who actually got to go to one of their shows. These videos are all so fantastic. I seems like they got better and better with each show. I'm so glad Mike joined them and they were able to do this.
Mike needs to get the hat, that would blow the crowd up.
Jerry Carney yeah!
You mean you think Mike should bring his wool hat out of retirement?
enjoyed that! :)
Wish I had gone to see this tour...sounds pretty good after all the years...still good.
Love that guy!
It's nice to hear Mike singing this song in his post tonsilectomy voice.
My heart!!!
silly as this sounds...........I LIKE HOW VOICES DON'T CHANGE WITH AGE..
I still like Mike the best.
