The Gretsch 12string! According to Nez that is not the original. That guitar, which was a custom model made for him, was stolen along with his white SG. Gretsch made the one he is playing here around the time they recorded Justus.
When he said as it was originally intended to be done I thought he meant more hard rock, not slower. This was my favorite song of his since I was 8 but I later realized it cried out to be played as a full on hard rock song with a driving band, not the weird brittle echo and whistling take on the Monkees album. If I don’t get to it myself in my lifetime I hope somebody reads this and does it, those chords are brilliant.

Go and listen to his killer rendition of "Some of Shelly's Blues." Though he did not write it, he makes a wonderful song of it with just his trusty Guild 12-string acoustic. The guitar shown in this video has been in his possession for as long as The Monkees were together and they got that endorsement.
