I watched this movie for the first time my freshman year of college. At first it was a delightful little kid movie until Sarah yelled “it’s not fair!” For the thousandth time. Jareth’s response of “you say that so often, I wonder what your basis for comparison is,” absolutely stuck out to me. Oddly, during the worst time of my life the reminder that life isn’t fair made me feel absolutely better. And what was unexpected in both the movie and real life was that although life wasn’t fair, it got better
The conversation between Sarah and Hoggle about asking the right questions is also important I’m so sad you skipped over it! It’s hoggle essentially teaching her through example about how to communicate in this fae-like realm.
Labyrinth is a film I, surprisingly, didn't grow up with. I grew up on other 80s fantasy films like Henson's previous Dark Crystal, Legend, Princess Bride, etc. But for some reason I didn't see Labyrinth eluded me. No clue why. I didn't see it until I was in my teens and fell in love with it anyway and have only grown to love it more and more with each watch. It's one of the rare films that just goes down so easy and is so effortlessly fun and entertaining while holding deeper themes right under the surface. I'm constantly amazed at just how much imagination Henson and his crew pack into the film. Hardly minutes go by without another creative character, set, or sequence being introduced to us. Labyrinth, to put it simply, just makes me happy. No baggage, no frills, no catch HAPPY. Just aesthetically, watching Labyrinth, or any Jim Henson project for that matter, is like coming home for me, lol. I'm an absolutely sucker for puppets, creatures, animatronics - I just live for the shit. And can't get much better on that level than Labyrinth.
I love the fantasy elements. Whwn you're a child you're discouraged from ghosts fairies etc. Some people lose the ability to see anything beyond the mundane and its damn depressing
This is a great video! I'm glad that Jim Henson, Brian Froud and all the people they worked with had the faith and determination to still poured their heart out in the production of Labyrinth even after the critical and box office reception of The Dark Crystal.
Great breakdown! I especially like the intuitive way you showed all the variations of "You can't take anything for granted". I feel like Sarah and Hoggle are parallels of one another to some extent. Both start out as materialistic, friend-less brats who learn to put people above things through their friendship to each other. Neither takes the other for granted. I think Sir Didymus found the footage for part 2. He says none may see it without his permission.
I never could get enough of this story. I'm currently making a fan quiz for this movie/book I'll be studying your videos for the help of my quizzes so thank you there are very very few theories on this movie and I'll be linking this video in my quiz when I do finally publish. The quiz is basically about how u would go through the labyrinth and how you would come out of the labrynth. Lessons u would learn from your experience or things u aught to learn still and those lessons are why you dont come out of the labryinth

User Wait Wait Wait, I hope you'll decide to do part two of this this is. There are vew few video done like this on the films that do a good job on breaking down explanation of the whole movie and it's meaning. I was quite disappointed to read up Jim Henson explained everything Sarah experienced with nothing but a dream of her own imagination. I guess to cope with the fact of acceptance of growing up and can't be acting like a child playing with her toys and fairy tales anymore. Please let me know when you plan to do part two you did a very good narration of part one it's a shame there haven't been any updates but I guess these things take time to make I hope we'll see part two eventually I would like to add it to my favourites or playlist and do time when you have the time to complete it and upload it thank you.
