the screws and nuts at 1:00 are called machine screws, thanks for the video. Great idea and I'm getting my rat tomorrow and I will definitely be building this.
BRILLIANT! Young lady, I really hope that you continue on in the mechanical trades. Women in STEM rock! FYI - even a master machinists will use that very method of roughly finding the center of a round object. I don't know who is mentoring you, but they deserve a raise or pat on the back!
Thanks for the idea! Our pan should be coming tonight. We inherited a wheel with our girls, but it is only 11 inches, and the one who loves it has outgrown it. I have set up the fidget spinner and two pieces of wood (we will attach it to the cage). I’m excited to get the pan and try it out.
In the end, the fidget spinners didn’t work for us, but we ended up getting a lazy Susan ball bearing, and it works well. Ours that loved the smaller wheel wouldn’t use it at first, though. We tried to bribe her, but she wouldn’t do it. We also lined it with felt to make it more comfortable for her feet. About a month or so after we made it, she started using it. When she started, she would hop off as soon as we came into the room. She didn’t want us to know that she liked it. :) Now, she doesn’t really care about us watching and we hear it every night.
Thank you so so much!! We have a non-releasable grey squirrel and we have been talking and browsing larger wheels for him, you just saved us $200 some dollars!!
Thanks for the video. I am going to give this a try. I have a really big plastic one but the wheel in yours is so much bigger. I have one rat obsessed with the wheel and I think she would love this.
@@HeyItsCharlie I have been lucky. My rats only seem to want to chew cardboard or toys I have just for chewing. Haven't caught them chewing on anything else.
You can attach the middle of the spiner to the pan and the 3 holes to the piece of wood. Put a nut or 2 between the middle hole on the spinner and the wheel. The 3 screws to 5x5 piece of wood which has 2 or more hang bolts on the outside.
First of all thank you secondly I just took a class (I mean notes) on ur video brainstormed a little bit and think I got it down so thank you again p.s it’s always good to know everything u need before u go to get it
thx for the video & a fidget spinner is GENIUS my son went thru a phase with those stupid things & has some thrown someplace in a drawer..this is a great idea my chinchilla would love this wheel only maybe smaller for a baby chin hes just a year & a half old he may need a smaller oil pan :P
I couldn't find anything round large enough locally, so I opted to make it out of reinforced cardboard - it works a treat! Rat's don't trust it yet, but they're curious
Hey Shadow! I plan to make a wheel for my girls following your video and mount it to their cage, but can you explain a bit more about how to use a lazy susan to do this? Thanks so much for all your helpful videos!
Question: Are you wearing a onesie? I hope so! lol! Great video-I have wanted to buy a Carolina Storm Wheel forever and you just showed me how to make it! :-)
Quick question, if using the lazy Susan/attach to cage method, does the lazy Susan replace the fidget spinner? I mean, since the lazy Susan spins as well... does one attach the pan to the lazy Susan instead of the spinner? (Sorry, I’m easily befuddled...!)
Nope, plastic works just fine! The only issue is some rats will eventually chew the plastic, but if its the hard plastic pans I'm thinking of (the colored ones) then its hard for them to get a grip and so they typically don't chew it.
I was looking for a wheel and I got a video on the top so I played it and then seen your video I was like oooo my unni(big sister in korea) also maken it let me see
Hey I’m really needing your help, I’m trying to introduce my rats using the carrier method but am confused roughly how long they should be in each stage for? Should I keep them in the smallest cage until they sleep together? Without any breaks? How long generally does each stage take? Thanks xx
Jenna Roesch - hi there. I’ve used this method with my rats and I used the guideline given by ‘isamurat’ from ratforum.com. From what I understand, length of time depends on how quickly everyone gets along. Once they start sleeping together, you can then transfer them to a larger (but still small) cage. After becoming buddy buddy, you can add an item or two, such as a flat hammock, but nothing they can hide in. See if you can find that article, as I found it very helpful. I’m on my tablet and don’t know how to copy and paste the link, otherwise I would :/
Thank you so much! I have a hyper little lady rat who is getting visibly frustrated by the 12" plastic wheel I got for her and I really didn't want to spent $100 + shipping on a commercial chinchilla wheel. Right now I have no idea where to get a fidget spinner other than online, since they seem to be less popular now, but I'll try to make it work with a rollerblade wheel. A bearing is a bearing, right?
Considering I’ve had the plastic one for years and it doesn’t smell I don’t that that’ll be an issue. Maybe after a few years it would smell but by then I imagine I’d have to replace it anyways due to the metal pieces warping over time (at least I assume they will, maybe they won’t).
If I hadn't tried wood first it would have been $15 total, so a huge save (most wheels this size are $70-120). But keep in mind I already had the screws, dremal, and figit spinner, so those would have upped the cost some.
Nuts, screws, bolts, it’s all the same to me lol. I need to up my terminology - you should have seen the outtakes where I kept mixing up nuts and washers! Anyways as for pee fishing either cooker or frozen works but most people (like me) use frozen. It’s the only way mine will even eat the outside of the pea and even then half the time they peel them :P

Hi! I know I'm very late to this video but I'm getting a Chinchilla and I'm wondering if anyone has used this for a Chinchilla and if it works well. Thank you!
As long as you center the holes and have long enough screws then no. My main issue was that my long center screw was only just large enough to go through the PCV pipe, meaning that it would get loose and start to rattle. if I had a longer screw for the middle or wasn’t using PCV (at first I used a wooden stand which worked really well but I was afraid it would start to smell because I hadn’t coated it) then it would be much better.
Yep! In fact I was loosely following a post on a chinchilla forum about making a wheel (which is how I found out about the large oil pan), because it’s not super common to find diy wheels in rat groups (or at least not detailed posts on them).
Seeing this, i dont get how people would opt for anything smaller tbh^^` Ps: uuuff just put the pan on the floor xD cant watch how it is sliding around during drilling
Just leave it in the cage - it may take a few weeks, but your rats will check it out and start using it over time. Once one rat starts using it, the others will quickly follow. Personally I've had rats take up to a month to start using a new wheel, so just let them explore at their own pace and they will start using it with time!
Yeah my two girls are the same, try starting off with liquid treats for them to lick off, and then maybe coat a solid treat in a liquid treat until they are more gentil
Very nice, now they can change their oil on the run.

Idk why people disliked this video... I don’t understand 😅
probably because only imperial's used, Americans do the same to European creators
Probably because in this diy you need more money than just buying a wheel online

Laura B If you look up “Resourceful Man is Resourceful” here on RUclips he has a 3 part video on mounting the lazy susan bearing to the pan.
