I'm playing a Goblin Gunslinger in Ghosts of Saltmarsh. It's been a lot of fun so far.
Edit: Oh, man. The Arcane Archer would be so vastly improved just by adding in a refresh for their Arcane Shot ability like the Gunslinger gets. Also, I think the abilities being tied to Wisdom makes sense, since that's what skills like Perception run off of. It makes sense to tie it to your shooting ability.

I've had characters express interest in firearms before but never seriously try and pursue the idea, and I've always had the same response. "Firearms are a new invention in my world, and still pretty rare. If you want to go on a quest to obtain one, you absolutely can, but it will take some work on your part". Nobody has ever followed up on the idea. Too bad, because I have this really fun concept for a sidequest to conquer an island of monkeys given intelligence by cursed bands of intellect controlled by a mindflayer and forced to act as pirates with cannons and pistols and everything controlled from a remote island fortress, and if you succeed you can take over the monkey gunpowder castle and all the production facilities and such.

That's a story that's going to spread. And D&D Characters often interact with wanderers and travelers becaues of their profession. It's entirely reasonable that they would have heard these rumors. 4:22 for grit point regeneration winging shot would be a nice tactical setup not letting an enemy get away (greater the distance/ more dramatic) or sniper bait setup dropping an enemy in the open with no to limited cover/ clear firing lines to pick off any one that comes to help

Even more rare than that weapon itself was the ammo it used. When magic started drying up a few wizards started preparing spells in advance & sealed until a time was needed & a source to draw energy from wasn’t available.

    Simple/advanced rules:
Simple: use the stats for bows as guns, hand waive away the production of black powder .
Advanced: guns roll 3x the damage dice of the bow they’re based of, but each attack roll is also a misfire check. On a misfire, you roll for damage against yourself, taking half the normal weapon damage as fire damage from the explosion, and rendering the gun unusable.
Reloading takes a main action, as does a shot, so you must action surge to do both.
You can have multiple guns to use Multiattack, like a pirate being strapped with 4 flintlocks on his vest.
The risks balance out the power.
(I also skip over the fine details about ranges being much more limited for flintlocks and leave the procurement of bullets and powder to RP stuff if people even care for it)

    • @Cloud_Seeker
      @Cloud_Seeker 10 месяцев назад

      Yeah. I do not agree.
First of 1d12 is enough damage. There is no point to deal 3x the damage as that is not even accurate for the time D&D takes place in. Sure. Guns are more powerful than bows and crossbows. But guns back when both crossbows and bows where used with guns also didn't have the range their older weapons had. Guns were fairly short range while crossbows and longbows were still effective at longer ranges.
Misfire checks is also not a good rule. It is not a good rule for the same reason critical fumble tables are not a good rule. It just punish people for having multiple attacks or using the weapons. Based on the fact a check will eventually fail, you just punish classes that are ment to roll many attacks. Like Fighters or Monks. You also do not have those rules for other weapons, even if those weapons have just as much of a potential to misfire. The string of a longbow can snap back so hard that your wrist gets cut open with a deep wound. You were required to have armguards to protect you from that. A crossbow can break if their strings were wet, and the same goes for the longbow. With longbows you were also required to have correct posturing in order to draw the bow without physical damages to your body. If you drew a bow in the incorrect way, you might just pull a muscle or break a bone.
So why do guns have misfire rules and not any other weapon?
Reloading should not take an action. Guns were faster than crossbows in reloading even if they were muzzle loaded. In the rules any loading weapon such as Crossbows or Guns can only be used once a turn unless you have a feat that removes that (if feats are allowed). You are not creating workable rules this way. It just try to make guns operate to a realistic framework when nothing else operates in a realistic framework. You can not move 30ft and swing a sword 9 times in 6 seconds as well. But that is well within the rules of the game for fighters. So why are you breaking format just for guns when Guns are not that powerful, they are not that much of a game changing element and they are not even breaking the game setting and lore. If you have to reload 4 pistols maybe I can agree with you, but the whole point about the Loading property is that you can only fire once, and then reload until it is your turn again.
If you want to look at weapons in the late medieval era it was known that armor had become so good that swords, spears, crossbows, longbows and even maces did just about nothing to them. This is why Pikemen were used instead. A two-handed spear with the strength of two arms had a much greater chance of actually harming someone in armor, even if it wasn't something that always worked. So even without guns, armor made these kinds of weapon obsolete.
If you want something that actually causes issues in your game you have magical weapons and magical armor. Those are the issues with games, and not guns. Guns are a logical progression and something EVERYONE should want in a world such as D&D as you can leave your town and run into boar the sizes of cars, or dragons and trolls.

For grit points I probably would go that if a creature is of a car greater than or equal to 1/2 the level of the gunslinger they get a grit point back, abject for exceptions. This is only combat while initiative order is active. Outside of combat probably twice the gunslingers level. Might add like fractional grit points where if a creature is below a CR of half the gunslingers level, but they manage to kill a percentage of the amount that their are, then after that amount is reached then they get a grit point.

Currently dming but when im not I've got a character idea u want to try.
He's a 34 year old cowboy who lost his right arm (he's firing arm) while on a job. He got badly injured while trying to kill a dragon that dwarves wanted dead (it was ruining their operation, along with his arm he lost his trustly revolver (name tbd), the dwarves with him saved him.
He has a mechanical arm (works like a real arm due to magical connection to him).
He usually doesnt wear the arm, opting for his cloak arm piece to be folded and pinned at the top.
He's a bit of a dead beat father, never being home. He does care for his childern and wife and sends them money he earns. Because of this I'm going to play him like the groups father figure.
What y'all think? Good, decent, bad? Open to suggestions.

i have been playing my character as a gunslinger but he is a battle smith artificer and will soon be taking levels in fighter going towards battle master. i don't see what the gunslinger does that the battle master doesn't do, a lot the battle master does, and the special firearms have a "reload" property, not a "loading" property so they don't work with the reloading weapon infusion.
i had thought at first to be artillerist artificer but found the arcane cannon too limiting (only last an hour, takes a spell slot to create again. it will last for an entire fight, sure, but will almost certainly fade before the next fight) battle smith oddly enough makes a better gunslinger than artillerist.
same way battle master makes a better gunslinger than the actual gunslinger subclass.
